GENERAL

Prior to the running of Race 1, Stewards inspected the track and upgraded it to a Good 3 at 11:53am.
 
As Jockey J. Bayliss was not riding at today’s meeting due to illness, Stewards permitted rider changes as per the Stewards Race Day Summary. Jockey J. Bayliss was advised he would require medical clearance prior to resuming riding.
 
RACE 1: TAB CLASS 1 PLATE     2200 M

MINGARDOS (NZ) – Slow to begin. Forced wider rounding the 1600m turn and as a result allowed his mount to stride forward whilst racing wide in order to secure a position closer to the fence and outside the lead passing the 1300m. Forced wider near the 600m when HURRICANE ROSIE shifted out to improve
 
PAPAL WARS (NZ) – Began awkwardly and was hampered shortly after the start. Apprentice C. Sutherland reported that in light of today’s performance, connections would now be sending PAPAL WARS (NZ) for a spell as the gelding weakened noticeably in the home straight. Trainer J. Townsend confirmed that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.
 
PISTON REBEL – Hung out when rounding the 1600m turn, forcing MINGARDOS (NZ) wider.
 
SACRED TED (NZ) – Connections advised of a change of tactics in that SACRED TED (NZ) would be ridden further back if circumstances permit. Began awkwardly. Over-raced whilst attempting to be restrained early. Eased out of the event passing the winning post on the first occasion. Jockey J. Morris reported at scale that he became concerned with the gelding’s action approaching the winning post on the first occasion and elected not to ride his mount out for the remainder of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed bilateral hindleg lameness. Trainer J. Morris was advised that a veterinary clearance and two satisfactory official trials would be required prior to SACRED TED (NZ) racing again. Trainer J. Morris advised that the gelding would now be sent for a spell.
 
TRUMP CARD (NZ) – Approaching the 1000m, shifted to a three wide position in order to improve and raced wide from that point onwards. Forced wider near the 600m when HURRICANE ROSIE shifted out to improve
 
HURRICANE ROSIE – Shifted out on jumping away.
 

RACE 2: GREAT NORTHERN FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE 1100 M

BOMBARD – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.
 
ELLTITUDE – Began awkwardly and shifted in, bumping heavily with TREFOIL.
 
NANTERRE – Bumped and forced wider by ROCK ME MAMA near the 1000m. Raced wide.
 
NUESTRA – On returning to the race day tie up stalls, NUESTRA collapsed, was attended to and examined by the race day Veterinary Officials before passing away. Samples were taken and the mare was sent to be autopsied. Stewards interviewed Jockey K. Zechner regarding NUESTRA’s performance. He indicated that during the event his mount commenced to weaken from the 600m and he did not pressure the mare from the 400m onwards. He further added on return to scale the horse was breathing heavily and he had concerns with its breathing and head carriage when arriving at the enclosure. Stewards also interviewed trainer L. Kelly regarding NUESTRA’s preparation and treatment records leading into today’s event.
 
ROCK ME MAMA – Over-raced early and whilst over-racing shifted out near the 1000m bumping with NANTERRE. Jockey A. Allen reported that his mount hung out throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.  Trainer J. Dunn was advised that a warning would now be placed on the gelding in relation to its racing manners.
 
TINKERTINO – Over-raced early.
 
OUTCRY – Slow into stride.
 
TREFOIL – Slow to begin and was bumped heavily, losing ground at the start. Had difficulty securing clear running rounding the home turn.


RACE 3: RED BULL COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE   1100 M

DUKEDOM – When asked to comment on the performance of DUKEDOM, Jockey J. Lloyd reported that the gelding raced somewhat greenly in the early stages and was unable to muster early speed. He further added that in his opinion DUKEDOM may appreciate a step up in distance.
 
INVINCIBLE CHOICE – Bumped on jumping away and lost ground.
 
KOBE ASCOT – Shifted in on jumping. Raced wide until the 500m.
 
WATERTIGHT – Raced greenly under pressure when being ridden forward to the lead in the early stages.
 
TORO CHASE – Raced wide for the majority. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
MAJESTIC LOUVRE – Bumped and inconvenienced shortly after the start and had to be restrained when awkwardly placed on heels.
 

RACE 4: BARRIER REEF POOLS BENCHMARK 75 HANDICAP         800 M

AKAKA FALLS – Slow to begin.
 
PALAWA KANI – Steadied when placed in restricted room near the 700m to the inside of ENUFF PILLS, which shifted in. Near the 400m, was obliged to steady from the heels of ENUFF PILLS when that horse became awkward and lost ground.
 
ENUFF PILLS – Near the 400m, shifted in made contact with the running rail and became awkward and lost ground as a result. Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early part of the home straight.

RACE 5: SCHWEPPES CLASS 2 PLATE       1100 M

NO NAME FRANK – Slow to begin.
 
PARETO – Blundered on jumping away. Lost its off-hind plate.

GILIANA – Near the 800m, steadied when placed in restricted room to the inside of PARETO. Jockey R. Maloney was reprimanded pursuant AR 131(a) for this incident.
 
KELLY'S LANDING – Jockey S. Cormack reported at scale that KELLY’S LANDING may not have appreciated today’s firm racing surface.
 
 
RACE 6: SEVEN BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP         1700 M

LE CHOCOLAT (NZ) – Connections advised of a change of tactics in that LE CHOCOLAT (NZ) would settle more forward if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Jockey B. Thompson reported that his mount laid out under pressure in the home straight.
 
BRAZEN KINGDOM (NZ) – Slow to begin.
 
BETTER STRINGS – Slow to begin.
 
AVOID THE MISSTRES – Slow to begin. Hung out from the 1000m and raced wide from that point. Jockey L. Tilley reported at scale that his mount hung out throughout today’s event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an upper respiratory noise. Trainer I. Turner stated that AVOID THE MISTRES will now be leaving his stable in light of today’s performance. Stewards advised Trainer I. Turner that if circumstances change, AVOID THE MISTRES will require a veterinary certificate inclusive of the results of an endoscopic scope prior to officially trialing before racing again.
 
WINSTON BLUE – Slow to begin.

RACE 7: RAY WHITE IPSWICH BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP         1200 M
 
MOUNT FUJI – Began awkwardly. Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight.
 
VELOZES – Began very awkwardly, unbalancing Jockey A. Jones momentarily and as a result lost ground. Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
ZOUFANI – Bumped heavily on jumping away and lost ground. Obliged to stop and straighten on several occasions over the concluding stages.
 
FLYING SHELLY – Began awkwardly, shifted in abruptly and bumped heavily with ZOUFANI. Shifted out under riding in the home straight.
 
SALT LAKE BETTY – Near the 100m had to be checked to avoid the heels of FLYING SHELLY and lost ground. Jockey B. Thompson the rider of FLYING SHELLY was charged and pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding, the particulars of the charge being that as the rider of FLYING SHELLY he did ride in a careless manner in that in the home straight when riding with heavy pressure and applying the whip, Jockey B. Thompson allowed his mount to shift out when not clear of SALT LAKE BETTY causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked by its rider to avoid heels near the 100m. Jockey B. Thompsons’ license to ride in races was suspended for a period of 14 days commencing midnight the 6th of September and concluding midnight the 20th of September. Jockey B. Thompson was advised of his right to appeal.
 
ROSE OF SHIRAZ – Over the concluding stages was obliged to stop riding when awkwardly placed at the heels of VELOZES.
 
BETTER BE NORDY – Obliged to alter course and shift in leaving the 200m to obtain clear running.
