When questioned regarding the performance of, and tactics adopted on the gelding, rider B. Thompson advised that his instructions were to obtain cover as the gelding has a tendency to over-raced if pressured early and that from the outside barrier he elected to obtain cover rather than be caught wide, adding that from a more favorable barrier SUMMIT may have been able to settle in a closer position. He further added that SUMMIT was not suited by the tempo of today’s event however was pleased with the performance, especially how the gelding finished the event off over the final 100m. When questioned if he had an opportunity to improve into the race earlier, jockey Thompson advised Stewards he felt that he would be required to cover extra ground if he elected to shift wider to improve earlier than he did. Steward spoke with trainer representative J. Smith who confirmed the instructions adding that from a more favorable barrier the gelding would have settled in a closer position, and the stable would likely step SUMMIT up in distance at his next start.
