GENERAL
Prior to the running of Race 1, Stewards inspected the track and upgraded it to a Heavy 8 at 12:50pm.
Race 1: RACING HEARTS MAIDEN PLATE 2190 M
JADATAN (NZ) – Hampered at the start. Between the 1100m, and 900m was momentarily carried wider when LA GRACIA (NZ) attempted to shift out and away from the rail.
LA GRACIA (NZ) – Severely hampered and lost ground at the start when MAKING EYES(NZ) shifted out abruptly. Bumped with JADATAN(NZ) on several occasions when attempting to improve between the 1100m and 900m. Near the 600m, was held up at the heels of the weakening MAGIC THEY SAY, was steadied before shifting out. Near the 500m, was further obliged to steady from the heels of the weakening PREACHABULLbefore shifting in. Was then able to secure clear running between MAGIC THEY SAY and PREACHABULL leaving the 400m. Stewards after taking evidence from Jockey H. Van Der Hoven regarding the tactics he adopted in today’s event adjourned the inquiry to a time and date to be fixed to enable Stewards to further assess Mr. Van Der Hoven’s ride, recent form and wagering. Stewards also took evidence from Trainers Representative for Archibald Racing, Mr. T. Pollard regarding riding instructions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed minor lacerations to the near hindleg.
MAGIC THEY SAY – Made the crossing awkwardly. Weakened leaving the 600m. Following today’s disappointing performance, Co. Trainer G. Lane was advised that MAGIC THEY SAY would be stood down from metropolitan races until such time its form improves to the requisite standards.
MISS ELLYSE - Began awkwardly and shifted in.
PREACHABULL – Weakened from the 400m. Following today’s disappointing performance, Co. Trainer G. Lane was advised that PREACHABULL would be stood down from metropolitan races until such time its form improves to the requisite standards.
MAKING EYES (NZ) – Began awkwardly and shifted out.
Race 2: IPSWICH PARTY HIRE QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1700 M
HE'S GOT GRUNT– Began awkwardly and was then hampered and lost ground. Over-raced in the early stages. Bumped near the 250m when NOTTINGTON PRINCE laid out under pressure.
MISHANI IMPACT– Began awkwardly, bumped BODHRAN and lost ground.
NOTTINGTON PRINC – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Laid out near the 250m, bumping with HE'S GOT GRUNT and became unbalanced.
VINTAGE VIBES – Laid out in the early part of the home straight.
BODHRAN – Began awkwardly and bumped MISHANI IMPACT. Jumped the crossing. Had difficulty obtaining clear running approaching and rounding the home turn.
NUZANA – Commenced to weaken leaving the 600m. Underwent a post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Trainer B. Davis was advised that NUZANA would be stood down from metropolitan races until such time its form improves to the requisite standards.
PIERTAGA – Began awkwardly. Commenced to weaken approaching the home turn. A post-race veterinary examination revealed heat stress.
Race 3: TAB MAIDEN PLATE 1700 M
ALZURRI – Steadied from heels approaching the 1000m.
KOJAK (NZ) – When asked to comment on the tactics adopted today, Jockey R. Maloney explained that it was not his intention to race in a forward position however after beginning well from a wide barrier and being caught wide, he elected to allow KOJAK (NZ) to stride forward to obtain a leading position closer to the rail.
TULONG – Laid out rounding the home turn and for the remainder of the straight when placed under pressure, placing its rider at a disadvantage. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
CAESAR CAKE – Slow to begin. Raced wide.
KOBABILITY – Near the 1300m, bumped with KOJAK (NZ) on several occasions. Jockey R. Maloney the rider of KOJAK (NZ) was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding.
Race 4: GREAT NORTHERN CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1100 M
ANTONITO (NZ) – Raced wide.
BLUE SPINEL – Near the 800m, was obliged to steady from the heels of PARTY SPIRIT, which commenced to hang in despite the efforts of its rider.
MAJESTIC BOOM – Jockey A. Thompson reported at scale that in his opinion MAJESTIC BOOM may not have appreciated todays track conditions.
SPEEDY ONE – Slow to begin and lost ground before mustering early speed and racing forward. Cast its near fore plate.
PARTY SPIRIT – Began awkwardly. Near the 800m, commenced to lay in.
After the running of this race, Stewards upgraded the track to a Soft 7 at 3:34pm.
Race 5: BARRIER REEF POOLS BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1700 M
EXPECTANT – Slow to begin. Left a trailing position and improved into a three wide position from the 1000m. Bumped with MOONSHINE RUN on several occasions near the 800m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
MAN OF THE TOWN – Near the 1400m, was momentarily steadied from heels. Near the 250m, improved onto the heels of POWER ACE, which shifted in under pressure. MAN OF THE TOWN was then obliged to shift out before being held up at heels for the remainder of the event and was unable to be fully tested to the finishing line. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted today, in particular the decision not to elect to improve into a 3 wide position near the 900m, Jockey J. Cartwright explained that her mount was inclined to lay in throughout the event and over-race and in her opinion as the gelding is relatively lightly raced it may not have been capable of sustaining a wide run from back in the field. Stewards noted the comment.
ZOU BIG BOY – Blundered on jumping away. Bumped near the 200m by DEEP DAWN.
SMART AS SMART – Hampered on jumping away.
MOONSHINE RUN – Slow to begin. Bumped near the 800m.
POWER ACE – Began awkwardly and shifted out.
DEEP DAWN – Bumped near the 200m by ZOU BIG BOY
Race 6: GORDON'S GIN BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP 1350 M
LIMAHULI – Began awkwardly and bumped FERINO (NZ).
DIAMOND EPIC – Raced wide. Cast its near hind plate.
FERINO (NZ) – Bumped LIMAHULI on jumping away. Held up approaching the home turn.
ISLAND MAGIC – Approaching the 1000m, when the pace of the race slackened commenced to over race and shifted out, bumping STRIKE THE HEART. Apprentice E. Lang was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(d) for excessively reducing the pace of the race.
STRIKE THE HEART – Bumped near the 1000m. Near the 150m, was obliged to steady when tiring and awkwardly placed between DIAMOND EPICand FERINO (NZ), which laid out. Jockey J. Guthmann – Chester rider of FERINO (NZ) was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding.
Race 7: VINCE INSURANCE CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200 M
BOOM BOOM RAY – Dropped its head prior to the start being effected. When asked to comment on the tactics adopted today, Apprentice J. Franklin explained that his instructions were to be positive early, however after beginning fairly from a wide barrier, he elected to allow his mount to stride forward and settle further forward than anticipated rather than being caught 3 wide.
LANTAU ISLAND - Hampered between runners on jumping away.
EXTREME SPIRIT – Hampered between runners on jumping away.
BRUTAL GLORY– Began awkwardly and shifted in. When asked to comment on the performance of BRUTAL GLORY, Jockey M. Rodd reported that the gelding travelled well until the 500m and when asked for an effort proved disappointing and failed to respond to his riding efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer K. Schweida was advised that the gelding would now be required to officially trial prior to racing again.
SEQUEL – Began awkwardly and shifted out.
