GENERAL
 
Stewards permitted the following overweights –
 
Race 2: M. Du Plessis +1kg (55.5kg)
Race 6: B. Thornton +0.5kg (56.5kg)
 
As D. Turner was not riding at today’s meeting for acceptable reasons, he was replaced as per the race day summary.
 
Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor was fined $200 pursuant to AR 127(1) for failing to fulfil his riding engagements in Race 3 and 7 and was replaced as per the race day summary.
 
Trainer D. Forster was fined $100 pursuant to LR67(1) for the late declaration of A. Jones as the rider of SWANFELS in Race 7.
 
Trainer C. Geran was reprimanded pursuant to LR67(3) for the late declaration of G. Geran as the rider of the emergency runner MISS HIGHFAULTIN in Race 8.
 
Trainer J. Sims was reprimanded pursuant to LR68(1) or failing to scratch the emergency VIZSTAR in Race 8 by the prescribed time.
 
Due to a mechanical fault, the starts were effected manually.
 
 
RACE 1:POCO VINO QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP  800 M
 

LUCKY PAT – Bumped rounding the home turn.
 
FORMAL AFFAIR – Near the 500m, steadied when racing to the inside of MISHANI RAINFIRE, which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.          
STORM PETAL – When racing greenly, laid out rounding the home turn and bumped with LUCKY PAT.

MAGANISTA – Laid out under pressure over the final 100m.

SUPER SWAZEY – Slow to begin.
 
MISHANI RAINFIRE – Raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.


RACE 2: SCHWEPPES MAIDEN HANDICAP   2170 M

MR RACING – Slow to begin. Jockey R. Wiggins reported at scale that MR RACING had to be pressured in the early stages to muster speed.
 
PEPE – Raced wide until the 1500m.
 
PROMISES MADE (NZ) – Jockey A. Jones could offer no explanation for today’s disappointing performance. A post- race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
LITTLE LUNCH (NZ) – Approaching the 1600m, laid in, contacted the rail and raced ungenerously for a short distance. Had difficulty obtaining clear running approaching the home turn. Improved onto heels approaching the finishing line and was steadied.

CLASSIC SHIRAZ – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Approaching the 200m, laid in before being corrected by its rider.

ARTISTIC TOUCH – Approaching the 200m, raced in restricted room for a number of strides to the inside of FIVE OF US, which laid in and away from CLASSIC SHIRAZ, which also shifted in slightly.


RACE 3: RIVER 94.9FM MAIDEN HANDICAP  1680 M

BIG TECH – Approaching the 1500m, raced in restricted room to the inside of ROYSTON, which shifted in when insufficiently clear. Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester, the rider of ROYSTON was severely reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a). In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration ROYSTON’s racing manners in particular that the gelding appeared make the crossing awkwardly. Held up from the 500m until the finishing line and was unable to be fully tested over the concluding stages. Bumped with CONCADOR on several occasions leaving the 100m.
 
HELL TO THE LINE - Bumped with HOPETOUN PARK shortly after the start.
 
KIDS INTHE KITCHEN – Hampered on jumping away.
 
ROYSTON - Laid out rounding the home turn. Bumped near the 150m whilst weakening.
 
OAKFIELD GALAXY - Apprentice C. Sutherland reported at scale that OAKFIELD GALAXY raced flat in today’s event.
 
LUCKY JOKER – Slow to begin.
 
WESTERN LIGHTS – Bumped near the 50m when weakening. When asked to comment, Jockey A. Jones could offer no explanation for today’s disappointing performance.
 
BLOOD RED - Held up from the 500m until the finishing line and was unable to be fully tested over the concluding stages.
 
CONCADOR – Bumped with BIG TECH on a number of occasions leaving the 100m. When asked to comment on the performance of CONCADOR, Apprentice E. Lang reported that after being caught wide she allowed her mount to stride forward and settled further forward than initially anticipated. She further added that on straightening, CONCADOR failed to respond to her riding, was inclined to lay in and proved disappointing over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
 
HOPETOUN PARK – Bumped with HELL TO THE LINE shortly after the start.


RACE 4: HAPPY RETIREMENT JIM BYRNE BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP   1100 M

HE'S FOR THE GIRLS – Over-raced from the 700m to the 600m before being held up approaching the home turn.
 
IL CUBO – Raced wide from the 700m. Made the home turn awkwardly and shifted wider.

CUSTO – Slow to muster early speed.

RACE 5: TAB CLASS 4 HANDICAP       1200 M

I SEE YOU COMING – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
 
LA COMETA (NZ) – Slow to begin.

JUNGLE LAW – Bumped on jumping away. From the 200m until approaching the 100m, raced in restricted room to the inside of I SEE YOU COMING, which laid in. Approaching the finishing line was steadied from the heels of ACAPULCO GIRL (NZ),which shifted out slightly.

ACAPULCO GIRL (NZ) – Held up in the early part of the home straight until approaching the 100m.
 
I'M ZAC – Laid in when placed under pressure in the home straight, obliging its rider to stop and straighten on several occasions.              

TOUCH OF GRACIE – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after resuming from an extended spell and was cleared to start. Began moderately.

TORONESS – Slow to begin.


RACE 6: GREAT NORTHERN BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP          2170 M

HEAVENLY LOVE – Made the home turn awkwardly. 
 
LIKEABEEL – Allowed to stride forward from the 1000m and near the 700m was forced wider when MICHIFUKU shifted out to improve.

MICHIFUKU - Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped GIDDY GAN'S JOY.
 
STOICISM (NZ) - Raced wide until the 1200m.
 
SHIRLEY PEARLY - Bumped with CASANOVA MAN (NZ) shortly after the start. Held up from the home turn until approaching the 150m.
 
HURRICANE ROSIE - Laid in rounding the home turn.
 
CASANOVA MAN (NZ) – Bumped with SHIRLEY PEARLY shortly after the start. When asked to comment on the performance of CASANOVA MAN (NZ), Apprentice R. Thorburn explained that the gelding over-raced early and was unsuited by the tempo. He further added that he was obliged to race wide from the 600m, which may have had a detrimental effect on its finishing efforts. Apprentice R. Thorburn was fined $200 pursuant to AR 211(1) for weighing in overweight
 
KALKANLI – Held up from the home turn until the 250m. Improved onto heels near the 100m and was unable to be fully tested to the finishing line.
 
GIDDY GAN'S JOY – Bumped on jumping away. Over-raced for a short distance near the 1200m.

RACE 7: BARRIER REEF POOLS FILLIES AND MARES RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP        1350 M


COOL MUSI - Jockey M. Murphy dropped his whip near the 250m.
 
OUR JEWEL – Near the 1000m, shifted out and bumped TOUCHOFCLASS (NZ). Over-raced in the middle stages.
 
ROTHECATE - Began awkwardly. Improved onto heels in the early part of the home straight and was obliged to shift wider.

WEXFORD MISS (IRE) – Held up and unable to improve from the 500m until passing the 200m.
 
BEAUTIFUL JO - Slow to begin. Held up at the heels of the weakening MISS HIGHFALUTIN (NZ) from the 500m until the early part of the home straight.

SWANFELS – Change of tactics – settle further forward. Ridden accordingly.
 
BRITANNIA ROSE - Raced wide.
 
MISS HIGHFALUTIN (NZ) – Slow to begin. Commenced to weaken leaving the 500m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Following today’s disappointing performance, Trainer C. Geran was advised that MISS HIGHFALUTIN (NZ) would be required to officially trial to Stewards satisfaction prior to racing again.
 
TOUCHOFCLASS (NZ) – Blundered shortly after the start. Bumped near the 1000m. Improved onto the heels of the weakening CROSS OF SCARLET in the early part of the home straight and had to be steadied. Jockey T. Brooker reported at scale that she was concerned with the mare’s action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Lost its near fore plate.


RACE 8: GORDON'S GIN COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES RATINGS BAND 0 - 58 HANDICAP        1350 M

SIR MEMPHIS – Near the 1000m momentarily became awkwardly placed at the heels of WEST CORK, which shifted in. Jockey M. Murphy the rider of WEST CORK was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground in similar circumstances. Raced wide.

YEAH COPY – Raced wide.
 
JOHNNY THE KID– Slow to begin.
 
LUDIK – Had difficulty obtaining clear running rounding the home turn and in the early part of the home straight. Jockey R. Stewart dropped his whip inside the final 100m after being struck by B. Thompson.
 
SOUTHOFTHEBORDER – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 1000m, before restraining for cover. Improved onto heels approaching the home turn and had to be steadied.

TREASURER – Raced wide.

GOLD MERCHANT – Obliged to stop and straighten on several occasions in the home straight.
 
JEDIAH – Improved onto the heels of LUDIK in the early part of the home straight.
