MASTER OF MENACE (NZ) – Slow to begin. Raced wide from the 1800m until weakening near the 700m. Stewards questioned apprentice R Thorburn regarding the tactics adopted when he shifted his mount wider from the 1800m and as a result raced three wide from that point onwards. Apprentice Thorburn explained that at this point he felt the field was going to race in single file and he believed there was an opportunity to improve to a position outside the lead. He accepted, in hindsight that this was an error and he would have been better served remaining at the tail of the field. Stewards advised apprentice Thorburn that they agreed he had erred and would take no further action other than to draw this ride to the attention of the Racing Queensland apprentice training department.

Race 5: SEARLES GARDEN PRODUCTS BM60 Handicap 1500 metres

Prior to the declaration of correct weight a protest was lodged by M Powell, the rider of 3rd placegetter GRANNYS REWARD, against 2nd placegetter FLASH ZARIZ, alleging interference at a point approaching the 100m. After taking statements from the riders involved and reviewing the race replay stewards dismissed the objection, ruling that the interference suffered by GRANNYS REWARD was as a result of a shift from ATLANTIC ROYAL, which was taken out by FOXY FRAULEIN, which shifted out under pressure.

FOXY FRAULIEN – Approaching the 100m shift out under pressure taking ATLANTIC ROYAL wider, causing the gelding to check and bump GRANNYS REWARD which then bumped FLASH ZARIZ on the hind quarters.

ATLANTIC ROYAL – Bumped at the start and lost ground. Tightened for room and was checked approaching the 100m when racing between FOXY FRAULIEN, which shifted out under pressure and GRANNY’S REWARD, which was racing tight to the inside of FLASH ZARIZ, which shifted in after being bumped on the hindquarters. Stewards inquired into this incident and reprimanded Jockey W D’avila pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding, in that he allowed his mount to shift out under pressure when not sufficiently clear.

GRANNY'S REWARD – Held up from the 400m until passing the 200m before shifting wider to obtain clear running. Momentarily inconvenienced passing the 100m when bumped by ATLANTIC ROYAL which was forced wider by FOXY FRAULEIN, which shifted out under pressure. GRANNY'S REWARD then bumped FLASH ZARIZ on the hind quarters causing the gelding to shift in.

SCAPINI – Began awkwardly. Raced wide and over-raced during the early stages. Held up for clear running when rounding the home turn.

FLASH ZARIZ – Shifted in at the start and bumped ATLANTIC ROYAL. Held up for clear running approaching the 400m and clipped heels at that point. Shifted wider on the home turn.
