Race 1: KILCOY GLOBAL FOODS / BP KILCOY MAIDEN HANDICAP 800 Metres

LIKE SMOKE – Began awkwardly, resulting in rider T. Brooker making heavy contact with her left knee and ankle with the barrier partition, and lost ground.

CRAIGLEA THERA – Hung out and shifted very wide on the home turn. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer K. Johnston was advised that the filly will be required to barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again.

DIVINE GEM – Slow to begin. Near the 400m, had to checked from heels and lost ground. At a subsequent inquiry, apprentice T. Leslight, rider of ILFACROMBE KID, pled guilty to a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) in that passing the 400m, whilst progressing forward, he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in to the rightful running of DIVINE GEM, causing that horse to be checked by its rider and lose ground.  Apprentice Leslight’s license to ride in races was suspended for nine (9) days to commence midnight the 17th of December 2023 and end at midnight the 26th of December 2023. Stewards took into consideration apprentice Leslight’s good record in relation to this rule.

NAUGHTY HARRY (NZ) – Near the 1300m, momentarily steadied off the heels of ZELSON when that horse shifted out.

ZELSON – Near the 1300m, shifted out to avoid heels when the pace of the race slackened. Continued to race wide before striding forward to find a position outside the leader passing the 1000m. APPLECROSS – Raced wide throughout.

STORMTROOPER – Began awkwardly.

DRATINI – Shifted in on jumping and inconvenienced BETTER THAN BOOZE shortly after. After being caught three wide early, rider T. Brooker elected to shift wider leaving the 1000m in an attempt to settle in a more forward position. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted, in particular, rider T. Brooker’s decision to leave a trailing three wide position and shift wider leaving the 1000m, and race on the speed. Jockey Brooker stated that her instructions were to ride forward as the gelding races best when on speed. Jockey Brooker was also mindful that DRATINI can over race when asked to settle in a trailing position. Trainer L. Dillon confirmed these instructions and again added that DRATINI performs  best when racing on speed, and was not critical of T. Brooker’s ride. Stewards noted the comments. Cast the off fore plate in running.

BULSARA – Raced wide throughout. Held up for clear running approaching the home turn.

BETTER THAN BOOZE – Inconvenienced shortly after jumping. Held up for clear running entering the home turn.

Race 7:SOMERSET REGIONAL COUNCIL MAIDEN HANDICAP 1200 Metres

ALL ABOUT LEWIS – Bumped with WORTHY’S GIRL on jumping.

WORTHY'S GIRL – Bumped on jumping with ALL ABOUT LEWIS.

MISS ORWELL – Bumped on jumping. Hung out from the 400m until entering the home straight.

GYPSY WHITE SOCKS – Shifted out on jumping and bumped MISS ORWELL. Near the 1000m, when racing ungenerously, was checked by its rider and lost ground. Stewards after inquiring into the incident and after taking evidence from apprentice O. Kendal, rider of ROAR HIDE, jockey A. Thompson (HIT), jockey T. Brooker (MISS ORWELL) and jockey L. Tarrant (GYPSY WHITE SOCKS), noted that HIT, whilst racing greenly, shifted in and away from ROAR HIDE, taking MISS ORWELL in slightly, obliging GYPSY WHITE SOCKS to race in restricted room. Stewards when considering the evidence tendered and noting the racing manners of GYPSY WHITE SOCKS and the comments from jockey L. Tarrant, that the filly was inclined to run away from the rail, could not satisfactorily attribute blame to any particular rider, and noted the incident. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

PRIDE AN' JOY – Raced wide throughout.

ALL NEW HUSTLE – Connections advised that the gelding will be ridden further forward if circumstances permit. Slow to begin and settled in a rearward position.

ROAR HIDE – Stewards queried into the improved performance and the tactics adopted by apprentice O. Kendal. Trainer E. Hargrave advised that the only instructions issued were to attempt to settle just off the speed and further added that at its most recent start at the Gold Coast, it was her belief that the mare resented racing on the Poly track. Apprentice Kendal further added that the mare began much better than expected, and after being caught wide she elected to allow her mount to stride forward to the lead near the 900m. Stewards noted the comments from both trainer and jockey.
