The start of this event was delayed approximately 2 minutes when both PRINCE OF DIAMONDS and FULL STRENGTH required resaddling on arrival at the barriers. Following this, FULL STRENGTH underwent a veterinary examination after contacting the barrier partition on being loaded.

FULL STRENGTH – Underwent a pre race veterinary examination after contacting the railing in the mounting enclosure and was cleared to start. Severely hampered on jumping when ZOODOO began awkwardly and shifted out.

BORN TO BE ALIVE – Raced wide without cover throughout. Weakened from the 600m. When asked to comment on the instructions given and the tactics adopted, particularly in the middle stages, apprentice A. McColm, in the presence of RQ apprentice coach, R. Fradd, advised that the instructions were to obtain a forward position on the rail if possible. He add that after beginning well, he allowed the gelding to stride forward from the wide barrier, however he was unable to cross the runners to his inside and was then caught in a three wide position without cover. He added that both IMAGINA and PROCLAIMER pushed forward to the inside of BORN TO BE ALIVE and he felt at that point he did not have the speed to then cross those runners in the middle stages even though the pace was only moderate. Therefore, he elected to continue travelling three wide with the leaders. He added that when he asked for an effort the gelding failed to respond and weakened from near the 600m. Apprentice McColm agreed with Stewards in that he had erred in his judgement, and in hindsight should have attempted to allow his mount to stride forward and cross in the middle stages or to steady and attempt to find a position with cover.  Stewards noted apprentice McColm’s comments and took no further action given his limited race riding experience as an apprentice. A post race veterinary examination revealed mild heat stress and a poor recovery.

PROCLAIMER – Slow to begin. Raced in restricted room and inconvenienced near the 400m when the weakening BORN TO BE ALIVE shifted in momentarily.
