GENERAL
SPEC OF SILVER was declared a late scratching from race 2 at 7:59am due to being a dual acceptor at the race meeting. Trainer M Cochrane was questioned in relation to his failure to scratch the mare and was subsequently reprimanded under the provisions of LR36(6) for failing to scratch a dual accepted runner by the prescribed time. In only issuing a reprimand, stewards were mindful that Mr Cochrane had not breached this rule prior and that his failure to scratch the runner did not cost an emergency a start.
Upon arrival at the course jockey R Payne advised stewards that she would be overweight on her accepted ride in race 5 on TAKE THE LEAD. As there were no other riders available stewards permitted jockey Payne to ride the gelding 0.5kg overweight. Ms Payne was subsequently reprimanded under the provisions of AR190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight. In only issuing a reprimand stewards where mindful of Ms Paynes recent clear record in relation to the rule.
Race 1: SMITHY'S HIGHLAND SERVICES Class B Handicap (1000 METRES)
SPEED KING – Began awkwardly shifting outwards impeding EMERALD JOY and slow to begin as a result. Apprentice H Saunders pleaded guilty to a charge under provisions of AR132(7)(a)(ii) in which she applied her whip to her mount 11 times prior to the 100m and 13 times in total. Ms Saunders license to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period of 9 days to commence midnight 1/8/26 to conclude midnight 10/8/26.
MRS VEE – Raced keenly in the early stages.
BETTY BOOM – Began awkwardly.
EMERALD JOY – Began awkwardly and impeded shortly after by SPEED KING which shifted outwards. Slow to begin. Inclined to lay outwards when under pressure in the home straight.
Race 2: AQUAFLOW BENCHMARK 60 Handicap (1000 METRES)
The start of this race was delayed due to READY AND BETTA proving difficult to load. Stewards ordered the scratching of the gelding, however the starter failed to respond to the order and persisted to load the gelding. It was noted that the on course broadcaster had advertised the scratching however once the horse was loaded in the barriers the broadcaster was able to immediately rectify the information on course prior to the start of the race. Stewards spoke to starter L Lewis regarding his processes and procedures in respect to appropriately communicating with stewards and responding to any directions promptly.
TERAMBI – Laid inwards under pressure over the final 100m.
GREYLIST – Was fractious in the mounting yard prior to proceeding onto the track. Knuckled on jumping. Trainer B Trimble was advised that a warning would be placed on the geldings record due to its pre-race behaviour.
TIPSY TIGER – Began awkwardly. Inclined to lay inwards over the final 100m.
GUNNIE GUNFIGHTER – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
READY AND BETTA – Proved difficult to load. Began awkwardly. Raced wide during the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. When questioned in relation to the performance jockey E Bell stated that the gelding was first up today and would derive benefit from the run, she further added that READY AND BETTA may be better suited to races over a further distance. Trainers representative J Manzelmann was advised that a warning would be placed on READY AND BETTA due to its loading manners.
LADY DE VEGA – Began awkwardly. Inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the home straight.
Race 3: ISAAC REGIONAL COUNCIL QTIS Maiden Plate (1200 METRES)
Prior to the declaration of correct weight jockey E Bell, the rider of second placed ANDERS KISS, wished to view the available replays to ascertain if there were grounds to protest against first placed HERE I COME (NZ) (apprentice A HEINRICH). After doing so Ms Bell elected not to proceed and as a result stewards declared correct weight on the judges numbers.
HERE I COME (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Inclined to lay outwards under pressure in the home straight.
MYSTIC MOUNTAIN – Began awkwardly and slow into stride as a result. Raced wide throughout. Apprentice A Meissner reported that her mount had resented the kickback throughout the event. Trainer G Bell was advised that a warning would be placed on the geldings record for a poor performance.
TOABE – Slow into stride.
HOT LUCI – Was fractious behind the barriers. Over raced in the early stages. Inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the home straight. Trainers representative J Manzelmann was advised that a warning would be placed on the pre-race manners of HOT LUCI.
BESTOV – Began awkwardly and was slow to begin as a result. Raced wide in the early stages. Hung inwards under pressure in the home straight.
RUBY DOREEN – Was kicked behind the barriers by HOT LUCI, harmlessly dislodging jockey N Summers and galloped for a considerable distance before being recaptured. Was subsequently declared a late scratching by order of stewards at 2:24pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight stewards ordered that all bets placed on RUBY DOOREEN be refunded in full and the following deductions to apply.

A subsequent post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities at the time of examination however the race day veterinarian recommended a follow up with the stable veterinarian in the coming days. Trainers representative J Manzelmann was advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness would be required prior to RUBY DOREEN racing again.
ANDERS KISS – Raced wide in the early stages. Inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the home straight.
SCOTCH ROCKET – When questioned in relation to the performance jockey S Robbins reported that the filly failed to travel at any stage and may not have handled the track surface today. Trainers representative J Manzelmann was advised that a warning would be placed on SCOTCH ROCKET for a poor performance.
Race 4: ESSEX GRAZING CO. ACTON MEMORIAL RATINGS BAND 0 - 55 Handicap (1200 METRES)
MARAVILLAS – Raced wide throughout.
SPEC OF SILVER – Raced wide throughout. Inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the home straight.
MAYOR OF KINGSTON – Began awkwardly and slow into stride. When questioned in relation to the performance jockey E Bell stated that her mount had resented the kickback in the early and middle stages, she further added that the gelding may be better suited to races over further distance.
MISSISSIPPI DREAM (NZ) – Began awkwardly and knuckled soon after the start. Raced keenly in the early stages. Commenced to yield ground from the 400m. Jockey S Robbins reported that in her opinion her mount failed to handle the dirt racing surface today. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. Trainers representative J Manzelmann was advised that a warning would be placed on the mares record for a poor performance.
CHALKLEY – Raced keenly in the early stages.
SUPER SLICK – Raced wide throughout. Inclined to lay inwards when under pressure in the home straight.
Race 5: FOXLEIGH MINE MIDDLEMOUNT CUP OPEN Handicap (1475 METRES)
BEAU RAIN – Commenced to yield ground from the 700m to be beaten 49 lengths. Apprentice J Miller reported that the gelding may not have handled the track conditions at today’s race meeting. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. Trainer G Bell was advised that BEAU RAIN would be stood down from racing until the completion of an official trial or jump out to the satisfaction of stewards due it to being uncompetitive.
RAETIHI (NZ) – Raced wide in the early stages. Raced keenly in the early stages.
TAVANASIA (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide throughout. Laid inwards under pressure in the home straight.
NEW LEVEL (NZ) – Began awkwardly and was slow to begin as a result. Raced wide throughout. Inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the home straight.
OUR MISSILE – Began very awkwardly and was slow to begin as a result. Resented the kickback noticeably in the early and middle stages until shifting wider near the 500m to improve. Inclined to lay inwards under pressure in the home straight.
CALYX ROSE – Raced keenly in the early stages. Stewards intend to inquire into apprentice H Saunders whip use prior to the 100m at a time and date to be fixed.
CASH ARTIST – Slow to begin. Inclined to lay inwards when under pressure in the home straight.
TAKE THE LEAD – Raced wide throughout. Laid out upon entering the home straight. Following the running of the race jockey R Payne pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR211(1) in that she returned to the scales in excess of 0.5kg overweight. Ms Payne was subsequently fined $200. In determining penalty stewards where mindful of Ms Paynes guilty plea and recent good record in relation to the rule.
