GENERAL:
Stewards this morning conducted inspections of the stables on course and off course of trainers with runners engaged at today's meeting. No breaches of the Rules were detected.
Race 1: Book Your Tickets For Winning Edge Newmarket on 2 July Maiden Handicap - 1100 metres
1st RAPID COMMAND 2nd BYE BYE HAPPINESS 3rd MOUNTAIN LANE 4th - DINKUMS DARLIN'
ALLGIRL - The start was delayed when the mare refused to load into the barriers. Stewards ordered the late scratching of the mare at 1.02 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on ALLGIRL be refunded in full and that the following deductions apply:
30¢ in the dollar for the win for the winner, RAPID COMMAND
23¢ in the dollar for the place for the winner, RAPID COMMAND
19¢ in the dollar for the place for 2nd, BYE BYE HAPPINESS
23¢ in the dollar for the place for 3rd, MOUNTAIN LANE
Trainer Mrs C. Dore was advised that she must obtain a further barrier certificate before the mare will be permitted to race again.
The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey T. Bannon, the rider of BYE BYE HAPPINESS which finished second, to examine the patrol films to determine whether to lodge an objection against RAPID COMMAND (App. Q. Krogh) being declared the winner. Having done so, Jockey Bannon elected not to lodge a protest and stewards declared correct weight on the judge's placings. It was established that passing the 100 metres RAPID COMMAND brushed with BYE BYE HAPPINESS, however any interference suffered by BYE BYE HAPPINESS did not exceed the margin between the two horses at the finish.
HAMPDEN BOY - Stood flat-footed at the start and lost ground (4 lengths). Trainer Mr L. Wright was advised that a warning will be placed on the gelding's barrier manners.
MOUNTAIN LANE - Slow to begin.
DINKUMS DARLIN' - Approaching the first turn, near the 900 metres, had to be steadied when racing tight to the inside of another runner. Bumped by another runner passing the 200 metres.
RAPID COMMAND - Raced greenly when placed under pressure In the home straight, shifted in and made contact with another runner.
MISS MYSTIFIED - When questioned regarding her ride, App. R. Payne said that after being slow to begin her mount was then reluctant to hold its position when racing tight to the inside of another runner, and continued to race greenly throughout. She said that when placed under pressure in the home straight the filly responded to her urgings, however was inclined to lay out. The explanation was noted.
Race 2: Hillross Mackay BenchMark 65 Handicap - 1560 metres
1st GO DIGGER 2nd OKAY SWIFT 3rd WHAT'S YOUR SECRET 4th - STYLISH LUCK
REAL YUMMY - Shortly after the start was buffeted between runners.
STRUTTER - Passing the 1300 metres the saddle slipped forward when App. Darren Evans attempted to restrain the mare, placing him at a distinct disadvantage for the remainder of the race, then passing the winning post he was ultimately dislodged from his mount. App. Evans was examined by the Ambulance officers and cleared to fulfil his further engagements.
THANKGODFORFRANC - On returning to scale App. L. Attard reported that his mount failed to travel comfortably at any stage of the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding was sore in front. Trainer D. Micallef was told that he must provide a veterinary clearance prior to the horse being permitted to race again.
Race 3: Duke of Edinburgh Hotel Class 2 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st - SERENE PEARL 2nd MISHANI PAGAN 3rd GREAT PRETENDER 4th - SUNNY CHIEF
HAIL MAHER - After arriving behind the barriers the Norton bit on the mare broke. As this gear could not be replaced, stewards ordered the late scratching of the mare at 2.11 p.m. Subsequently they ordered that all bets made on HAIL MAHER be refunded and that the following deductions apply:

Race 4: Universal Sports Tours QTIS 3-Y-O Handicap - 1200 metres
1st ONE BAR NONE 2nd DASH OF WIZZARD 3rd MISHANI INVADA 4th – SAMARAH GIRL
MISHANI ALLEGRA - When Jockey T. Bannon was to be overweight, stewards permitted Jockey G. Watson to be substituted as the rider of the filly. Jockey Bannon was reprimanded, stewards taking into account her exemplary record under the Rules.
MISHANI VIKING and GLORIOUS GEORGE - Slipped behind on jumping.
SAMARAH GIRL - Began awkwardly.
CYCLONE KAN - Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
GUTZ CI - Rounding the home turn hung out and carried CYCLONE KAN wider.
HOT PLATE - Passing the 600 metres shifted out and made contact with DASH OF WIZZARD (App. J. Orman) on a number of occasions. Leaving the 100 metres had to be steadied when crowded for room between runners.
KENNYNOPAS - Passing the 100 metres was inconvenienced by another runner.
DASH OF WIZZARD - Passing the 600 metres was bumped by another runner on a number of occasions.
Race 5: H. L. Black Memorial Open Handicap - 1560 metres
1st HOLDONTOYAHORSES 2nd DODGE THE GREY 3rd PULL NO PUNCHES 4th - CASINO BENJO
HOLDONTOYAHORSES - Crowded for room shortly after the start.
LEXCEN - Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
MINTARO - Raced wide throughout.
BLOWIN' YOUR MIND - Was momentarily held up for clear running in the early part of the straight.
KNOWING ME - Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight, then passing the 200 metres was disappointed for a run and had to be shifted out to improve.
Race 6: Mackay Lightning Open Handicap - 1100 metres
1st VO HEART 2nd MORE THAN A SONG 3rd SNITZEM 4th - ADDICTION TO ROCK
CLOUD DANCER - Refused to load onto the float. Late scratching, by order of the stewards, at 12.06 p.m.
SAMMY JUNIOR - Slow to begin.
ADDICTION TO ROCK - Crowded for room shortly after the start.
ACCIDENTAL - Raced 4 wide without cover throughout.
SCOT FREE - Refused to settle in the early stages when being restrained to obtain cover. On returning to scale, rider reported that his mount was inclined to lay out in the home straight.
MORE THAN A SONG - Laid out under pressure over the concluding stages.
SNITZEM - Passing the 200 metres was bumped by another runner.
Race 7: Woollam Constructions Class 6 Plate - 1200 metres
1st HARD LIQUOR 2nd CLEAVER 3rd SPRING ROSE 4th - MAHRAJAAN
BUCASIA BEACH - When App. L. Attard was to be overweight, App. Q. Krogh was substituted as rider of the gelding. Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by App. Attard, and the circumstances related to a delayed flight resulting in his inability to lose weight.
WHATANEXCUSE - Slow to begin.
VELONSKI - Slow to begin. Shortly after straightening was momentarily hampered.
STAR TRUCE - Rounding the first turn, near the 900 metres, raced ungenerously, shifted in and crowded BUCASIA BEACH.
CLEAVER - When questioned regarding his riding, and in particular whether there was an opportunity for him from the 600 metres to obtain a position on the back of CANDENTE, Jockey Allen explained that his instructions were to not bustle the gelding in the early stages, rather have it travel where it was comfortable. He said that after beginning well he was able to obtain a favourable position where his mount travelled comfortably, however he was mindful not to ride the gelding along from too far out, as he believed that it has only one finishing effort. Trainer Mr B. Butts confirmed the instructions issued and said that in his opinion, had the gelding been placed under pressure earlier than he did on this occasion, it would not have finished its race off as strongly. Mr Butts added that in his opinion CLEAVER pulled up with soreness in front. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding was sore in front. Trainer B. Butts was told that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to CLEAVER being permitted to race again.
