Stewards inquired into the incident that occurred passing the 700m. Stewards questioned Jockeys A. Donald (FINAL CRIME), J. Stanley (ALLELUIA), B. Pengelly (JIMBO JONES), N. Thomas (MANDOLIN WIND), T. Fenlon (SHEER SUCCESS), and M. Philpot (MAHKOTA ROS). After taking evidence from all jockey’s involved and viewing the Stewards available footage it was established that MAHKOTA ROSE which was racing in restricted room alongside SHEER SUCCESS shifted away from ALLELUIA which had improved to its outside. Despite the efforts of Ms Philpot MAHKOTA ROSE stepped inwards and caused the resulting incident. Stewards were satisfied no rider was at fault and the incident was due to the actions of MAHKOTA ROSE.

Stewards questioned Jockey J. Stanley regarding the tactics employed. Mr Stanley stated that his intentions was to try and settle in a mid-field position with the smaller field as it was BIG JAKE’S first attempt over 1200m since joining the Taylor stable. After jumping away he was unable to do so and elected to settle in a rearward position, which were the tactics used in its previous start. He had also stated that he had difficulty obtain clear running from the 400m and once he was able to do so, the leader had slipped clear from the rest of the field and despite finishing strongly he was unable to run it down. The Stewards were satisfied with Mr Stanley’s explanation with no further action required.

Race 7: RACING AGAIN SATURDAY 18TH DECEMBER RATINGS BAND 0 - 55 Handicap 1300 metres

There was a delay prior to the start as Jockey N. Day had difficulty parading BOLD ADVANCE to the starting gates. A warning was placed on the pre-race manners of the mare.

Jockey D. Simmons, the rider of CELEBRATION DAY, placed 3rd by the judge, lodged an objection against the winner  CHAMPAGNE AT DAWN and second placed ONLY EMMA, alleging interference over the final 50m. It was established that ONLY EMMA had shifted out, and CHAMPAGNE AT DAWN had shifted in marginally, causing Jockey Simmons to take action and restrain to avoid the heels of ONLY EMMA. Bearing in mind where the interference took place, the manner in which all three horses finished off the race, and the beaten margin, Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied CELEBRATION DAY would have beaten ONLY EMMA and CHAMPAGNE AT DAWN, and as such the protest was dismissed and correct weight was given on the judge’s placings.

BETTER DAYS AHEAD – Fractious in the barriers prior to jumping resulting in Jockey C. Jokic striking her shin. Ms Jokic was advised that a medical clearance would be required before accepting any future race rides.

JOHNNY WHITESOX – Following the running of the race, Jockey N. Thomas reported that the gelding was making abnormal sounds during the running and continued to while returning to the mounting enclosure. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer J. Manzelmann was advised that the gelding would require a satisfactory trial prior to its next start. Mr Manzelmann advised he was considering the future racing prospects of the gelding from his stable.
