RACE 5: TAB BREEDERS PLATE QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE (1050 Metres)

Correct weight was delayed when a protest was lodged by the second placegetter jockey Chris McIver, the rider of BOWDENE, alleging interference against first placegetter ERIMAR, ridden by jockey Justin Huxtable, over the final 200m.

After hearing evidence from jockey McIver and trainers Kris Hansen and Clinton Taylor, it was established that ERIMAR had laid outwards when placed under pressure approaching the 150m, which impeded the running line of BOWDENE which as a result had to shift outwards and away from that runner’s heels for a stride. When assessing all evidence, viewing all available replays, and taking into consideration the interference to BOWDENE, where the interference took place, and the manner in which both runners finished off the race, stewards were not able to be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred, BOWDENE would have finished ahead of ERIMAR therefore dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the judge’s placings.

Jockey Michael McDonald was fined $200 under the provisions of AR211(1) for weighing in excess of 0.5kg overweight.Stewards will also look to inquiry into jockey McDonald’s whip use, in particular prior to the 100m, at a time and date to be fixed.
