Race 1: Henzells Agency Geldings and Entires Maiden Plate – 1000m
MEROVECH – Slow to begin.
SO RIDICULOUS – Slow to begin.
MEROVECH – Checked nearing the 800m.
SCILLION – Steadied near the 800m .
I AM BRUSE – Hung out nearing the 800m despite the efforts of its rider, causing tightening. Rider A. Best advised that the gelding raced ungenerously for the majority of the race. Trainer M. Webb was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the horse. Mr Webb stated that he would experiment with the addition of blinkers to the gear of the horse.
AS A HAWK – Rider S. Galloway had the whip knocked from his hand near the 200m.
HAY CAL – Raced 3 wide throughout.
INTEGRITY – Raced 3 wide throughout.
Race 2: The Passage F&M Plate – 1000m
GHERARDINI – Pending any further submissions, trainer S. Kendrick was fined $200 for failing to declare a rider by the prescribed time.
WE WANT PRENUP - The start of this race was delayed when the horse required farrier attention.
LEGS UNBARRED – M. Carson replaced J. Kokotajlo as the rider of the horse due to engagements at another race meeting.
On return to scale R. Wiggins, rider of the 2nd placegetter Anoro, lodged a protest against Rosie’s Command being declared the winner, alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the patrol videos, it was established that whilst Rosie’s Command had shifted out slightly in the home straight, Anoro itself was inclined to shift out away from that runner of its own accord, and therefore the protest was dismissed and correct weight semaphored on the Judge’s placings.
COURT CAFÉ – Slow to begin.
STICKY BEE – Began very awkwardly.
MARMAJAH – Began awkwardly and then hampered shortly after the start.
ASTRADAS – Slow to begin. Hung out badly from the 600m.
MISTRESS OF FIRE – Raced wide throughout.
CITY OF DISCOVERY – Rider A. Allen reported his mount may have choked down in the straight.
Race 3: Pelican Waters Benchmark 75 H'cap – 1000m
DENMARK HILL – As R. Jamieson was indisposed, M. McGuren replaced her as the rider. Shifted out near the 300m to obtain clear running, causing another horse to be steadied. Rider M. McGuren was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground.
TOM’S LUCK – Slow to begin.
JET DOWN ON IT - Began awkwardly. The saddle on the horse shifted back shortly after the start, placing its rider at a disadvantage throughout the race.
HEART OF MELBOURNE – Hampered shortly after the start. Again hampered near the 800m. Stewards questioned rider K. Wharton regarding his riding of the gelding rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. He stated that after being hampered at the start, the gelding raced further back than he would have liked, and having ridden the horse previously he was aware that it needs to be held up as it only has a short sprint. He added however that after being unable to obtain cover he was obliged to ride the horse in this manner. Stewards noted the explanation.
CHILLS – Held up in the early stages of the home straight and unable to improve.
EXPLORE THE WORLD – Raced wide.
RHYTHM ‘N’ RAP – Raced wide throughout.
Race 4: Holiday Apartments QTIS 3yo CG&E Maiden Plate – 1200m
LOST THIEF – After being kicked by another runner behind the barriers, was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.
R. McMahon, rider of the 2nd placegetter, Bowler Lane, lodged a protest against Fortini being declared the winner, alleging interference on the home turn. After taking evidence from the parties concerned and viewing the stewards patrol video it was established that Bowler Lane was hanging in at this point of the race and was awkwardly placed at the heels of Fortini and had not obtained running to the outside of that runner. In the circumstances, stewards found that jockey D. Brown, rider of Fortini, could not be held responsible for this incident and therefore dismissed the objection.
At a subsequent inquiry, R. McMahon was found guilty of a charge of careless riding, in that near the 300m when hanging in and after initially being held up on the heels of Fortini, he rode his mount to the outside of that horse and in doing so made heavy contact with Lost Thief, which became unbalanced and shifted out, forcing Omega across the rightful running of Grobbelaar, which had to be severely checked and in doing so inconvenienced Flinders Deagon. R. McMahon was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 9 meetings, to commence at midnight, 27 December and to expire at midnight, 9 January 2015.
GROBBELAAR – Crowded slightly for room at the start.
ZIP TO THE MOON – Bumped heavily at the start.
LOST THIEF – Inconvenienced when crowded at the start.
BLAZING INFERNO – Raced 4 wide throughout.
Race 5: Qualia Class 1 H'cap – 1300m
STAINER – Slow to begin.
EPIC MISS – Slow to begin. Raced 3 wide throughout.
GROOMED FOR GLORY – Overraced in the early stages. Trainer reported following the race that the horse lost its near fore plate in running.
SHE’S A DANICA – Steadied at the entrance to the straight when disappointed for clear running.
Race 6: Commercial Class 1 H'cap – 1300m
CELTIC DRAGON – Slow to begin.
SNAP FREEZE – Raced 3 wide.
IT’S A THRILLA – Lost off fore plate in running.
Race 7: Permanent Rental Class 3 Plate
DOLL IN HI HEELS – Declared a late scratching at 8.35 am by order of stewards.
DANSAL – Slow to begin. Steadied to avoid heels approaching the 1200m.
QUANDIALLA – Hung out and proved difficult to ride in the straight.
WIMPOLE STREET– Raced 3 wide throughout. When questioned into his riding of the gelding in the home straight rider G. Killen stated that after being obliged to race three wide it was inclined to over-race and he was unable to restrain the horse in an attempt to find cover which had was a telling factor on its over all performance in that the gelding did not finish the race off. Whilst stewards noted his explanation he was nonetheless advised to show more vigor in similar circumstances and not leave himself open to question.
