Race 1: Love & Partners Chartered Accountants Maiden Plate – 1600m

EXCITEMENT LEVELS – Declared a late scratching at 11.05 am on veterinary advice after being injured in its float when being transported to the course. Connections were advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to its next race start.

SO RIDICULOUS – Slow to begin.

ELUSIVE LEGACY – Slow to begin.

GYPSY GOLD – Raced wide in the early stages before assuming a position outside the lead passing the 1000m.

EXCITEMENT DREAM – Raced wide until near the 800m.

SO RIDICULOUS – Trainer B. Gill was questioned regarding the improved performance of the horse. He indicated it appreciated the step up in distance to 1600m of today’s event, and at the horse’s most recent start had been forced to race wide and had hung out after the 600m when improving into the event. He indicated that for this reason he had engaged a left-handed whip rider and was of the view that this had a beneficial effect on the performance.

BEAU D’ARGENT – Rider D. Brown reported that at no stage throughout the event did the gelding travel comfortably and he was forced to place pressure on his mount at various times during the early and middle stages to hold its position, however the gelding offered very little when placed under pressure in the home straight and weakened over the final 200m. He was however unable to offer an explanation for the performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed the horse to be lame in the near hind leg. A veterinary clearance must be produced prior to its next race start.

MISS TRISTY – When questioned regarding the performance, rider Miss T. Harrison indicated that the filly began better than expected as the horse is normally slow to begin and without having to pressure her mount found herself in a forward position, and when attempting to secure cover near the 1200m received minor contact from the horse to its outside and for this reason Miss Tristy commenced to race keenly and she held that position in the lead. She felt that having ridden in this manner may not have suited the filly and other than returning to scale with blood in its mouth could offer no further explanation for the performance. Trainer Mr S. O’Dea agreed that having ridden in this manner may not have suited the horse and that it would now be his intention to continue with the preparation and stepping up to 1800m and attempt to have the horse ridden more quietly.

SAFECRACKER – Rider R. Fradd reported the horse raced in blinkers for the first time today and, in his opinion, this caused the horse to be fractious prior to being loaded and also in the barriers and throughout race. He indicated he had recommended to connections to remove the blinkers and step the horse up to races over longer distances. Trainer D. Bell agreed with jockey Fradd’s comments and indicated he would more than likely remove the blinkers for its next race start.

The horse underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to take its place in the field. Then found to have blood in its near-side nostril post race, which was attributed to the contact in the barriers. Stewards took no action against the horse. When attempting to be steadied approaching the 800m, the gelding overraced until leaving the 700m.

MIDNIGHT CURFEW – Raced in restricted room near the 400m and had to be steadied before having difficulty securing clear running near the 200m. Rider J.
