As R. Wiggins was indisposed due to personal reasons, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: CAMPAIGN GROUP QTIS 2YO MAIDEN H'CAP – 1300M
SHOW COMMAND – Finished tailed off after having raced three wide without cover. J. Stanley reported that at no stage did the horse travel comfortably in the rain-affected conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
LIGHT SHOWS – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
WATCHED – Had to be steadied when tightened for room near the 1200m.
WICKED SNIPPETS – Had to be steadied when tightened for room near the 1200m. Held up rounding the home turn and into the early stages of the home straight.
Race 2: GOTRANSIT MEDIA GROUP PTY LTD MAIDEN PLATE – 1400M
CALL ME BILLY – Jumped away awkwardly and made contact with another runner. Improved on to heels near the 900m, shifted wider on the track and then raced three wide without cover. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a mild case of the thumps.
CORONATION JOURNEY – A. Spinks was asked to explain his tactics in that he positioned the horse towards the rear of the field when the horse has an established racing pattern of racing on the speed. He indicated that he had intended to go forward, however runners to his inside showed early speed and he was unable to cross and therefore elected to steady to secure a position closer to the fence. Jockey Spinks added that in his view the horse did not handle the rain-affected conditions.
MARINE ON PARADE – Overraced during the early stages.
SHEZ EXTRAORDINARY – Inconvenienced by another runner and lost ground on jumping.
Race 3: MERAMIST PTY LTD MAIDEN PLATE – 1400M
CARRY FORWARD – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
DIABLO NERO – Slow to begin. Stewards inquired into the riding of apprentice M. Cox. Stewards raised concerns with Ms Cox in that near the 900m and again near the 800m she attempted to improve into a position where there was doubtful room, resulting in her horse becoming unbalanced and also resulting in CARRY FORWARD being forced wider. Ms Cox indicated that she felt there was opportunity to improve her position on both occasions. After viewing the video footage, stewards advised Ms Cox that in similar circumstances she should show greater care and referred the matter to Racing Queensland Apprentice Advocate Ms R. Mason.
ROMAN TYCOON – Raced wide throughout.
WICKED TRILOGY – Jumped in the air as the start was effected.
Race 4: ONE ZERO COMMUNICATION BUDERIM MAIDEN H'CAP – 1000M
The start of this race was delayed as the field was loaded without leaving enough room for all runners to be loaded and as such all horses which had been loaded into the barriers had to be removed and reloaded.
CHARJAC – Held up for clear running from the 300m until leaving the 200m.
CAST OUT – Raced wide without cover.
ZINGING – Stewards questioned T. Harrison regarding her riding between the 850m and the 650m where it appeared she had opportunity to pressure the gelding to hold a trailing position behind CHARJAC. Ms Harrison stated that she had been advised by the trainer that the horse would take up a forward position as it normally has good gate speed and would settle with cover in the forward half of the field. She indicated that after travelling a short distance, the horse did not show early speed and she was of the view that she would take up a position behind CHARJAC and as she had been informed the horse can overrace she did not wish to vigorously ride the horse in the early stages. She further indicated that the horse had caught her by surprise in losing ground in this section of the race and she commenced to ride vigorously from the 650m. Trainer L. White was also questioned. She confirmed that she had made these comments to Ms Harrison and indicated that the horse would now be stepped up in distance and would be expected to take up a forward position, however she would again instruct the rider to not ride vigorously out of the barriers. Stewards, whilst not entirely satisfied with Ms Harrison’s explanation and being of the view that she had erred during that section of the event, believed however, given the instructions issued, it was not unreasonable for Ms Harrison to expect that the horse would travel more strongly into the race during that section.
MILADY HONG KONG – Inconvenienced by another runner on jumping, had to be steadied and as a result took up a position at the tail of the field. Steadied when placed in restricted room to the inside of another runner approaching the 500m. Had to be steadied when disappointed for a run between runners near the 200m.
SNITZEL’S BELLE – Inconvenienced near the 800m.
STEP THE PEDAL – Obliged to alter course to avoid the heels of another runner near the 300m.
Race 5: PELICAN WATERS GOLF CLUB CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1000M
SUNFAST – Fractious in the barriers, slow to begin and jumped away awkwardly.
KATY’S SON – Slow to begin. Had to be steadied near the 600m when racing in restricted room between runners. Had difficulty securing clear running from the 400m until approaching the 200m.
CANNY AND THE JET – Raced awkwardly and became unbalanced in the early stages.
WOMEN BE SHOPPING – Had to be steadied near the 600m when racing in restricted room between runners. Held up from the 250m until leaving the 100m when attempting a tight run between runners and near the 50m was obliged to steady and shift out across heels to secure clear running and went to the line without being fully tested.
Race 6: SAMUEL SMITH & SON/YALUMBA WINES CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M
DRAGON HUNTER – Raced three wide without cover.
GROOMED FOR GLORY – Held up rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight until leaving the 300m.
HANGOVER TOO – Raced wide throughout.
BOBBY BE GOOD – Held up rounding the home turn. Laid in under pressure in the home straight, causing the rider to stop riding and straighten near the 150m.
TYPHOON HENNY – Jumped away awkwardly.
CLASSIC ELEMENT – Overraced in the early stages. A. Taylor was afforded the opportunity to comment on the performance. She stated that the filly did not handle the prevailing track conditions and is also better suited when ridden with cover. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities and a swab sample was taken.
Race 7: COASTLINE BMW H’CAP – 1400M
NOISY OCEAN – Slow to begin.
COLOUR CHARGE – Trainer N. McCall was fined $100 for failing to declare T. Harrison as the rider by the prescribed time.
Race 8: THE COMPASS INSTITUTE INC CLASS 3 PLATE – 1400M
LORD BEAUFORT – Had to be steadied when tightened for room leaving the 600m.
NEARCTIC CHILLER – Raced wide without cover after overracing in the early stages and near the 800m shifted in and inconvenienced another runner.
NEUSCHWANSTEIN – Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $100 for failing to declare K. Wharton as the rider by the prescribed time. Tightened for room near the 800m. Forced wider near the 700m.
WALK TO THE BAR – Had to be restrained from heels near the 700m and shifted wider on the track.
KATIE’S COVE – T. Harrison reported that it had not been her intention to lead the race, however after attempting to restrain to take up a position In the second half of the field, she became aware that she would not be able to secure a position closer to the fence and therefore passing the 1200m elected to ride vigorously to take up a forward position and assume the lead. She added that in her opinion this had a detrimental effect on the horse’s overall performance and the horse weakened over the concluding stages.
UNBOWED – Slow to begin.
Race 9: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1600M
DESERT GENERAL – Trainer L. Birchley was fined $100 for failing to declare P. Hammersley as the rider by the prescribed time. Had some difficulty securing clear running in the early stages of the home straight.
EULO – Inconvenienced approaching the 800m and had to take evasive action.
PUNTERS JOURNEY – Became very unbalanced approaching the 800m and lost ground quickly, causing interference to a number of runners. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings other than minor lacerations to the hind of both fore canons. This veterinary finding, in addition to observations of the race footage, indicated that the horse may have overreached with its off hind leg and struck its off foreleg, causing it to blunder.
FLYING SAND – Inconvenienced approaching the 800m and had to take evasive action.
SILVER HEELS – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice T. Williams was reprimanded for failing to stop riding and straighten.
CRIMSON FORCE – Inconvenienced approaching the 800m and had to take evasive action.
