HALO SHINE – Stewards accepted the explanation tendered for the late declaration of M. Powell as the rider of this runner. Slow to begin. Stewards questioned M. Powell regarding his riding from the 1000m, after having obtained a position trailing the leader, as to his reasons for shifting outside the lead when the pace of the race was quite fast at that point. He indicated that he had been instructed to have the horse improve into the race from nearing the 800m as the horse does not sprint quickly and is very one-paced. Stewards advised Mr Powell that the pace of the race was such that shifting wider and improving past the leader showed a lack of judgment on his part, however could not be satisfied that his actions were culpable under the rules to the extent that any charge should be laid.
DARYL’S RUN – Stewards questioned apprentice R. Johnston-Bell in regard to the tactics adopted between the 1600m and the home turn. Of concern to stewards were his actions in shifting wider to improve after passing the 1400m which resulted in him racing three wide outside the lead passing the 900m. Mr Johnston-Bell indicated that as the horse had commenced to overrace at the 1600m and has had a tendency to overrace in the past, he did not wish to remain at the heels of HALO SHINE as he felt that he was in danger of improving on to those heels and that he would be better served shifting out at that point. Stewards advised Mr Johnston-Bell that in the circumstances they felt his ride lacked judgment as there was nothing displayed in the manners of DARYL’S RUN which suggested he was in any danger of improving on to heels and that his actions in shifting wider had an overall detrimental effect on the horse’s performance, however given his status as an apprentice did not feel that they could take the matter any further other than to draw this ride to the attention of the master of apprentices.
KAZAN – Stewards questioned trainer T. Hurley regarding the horse’s seemingly improved performance. He indicated that subsequent to the horse’s last start he had altered his feeding regime and altered the horse’s work program and indicated that had the horse not performed well today, consideration would have been given to retiring the horse. He also indicated that whilst no specific instructions were issued today, the manner in which jockey K. Wharton rode the horse, which was to allow the horse to find its feet at the tail of the field, would be the manner in which he would be instructing riders to ride the horse in the future.
Race 6: PRIESTLY’S DELIGHT CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1600M
NEWS EDITOR – Raced wide until leaving the 800m. Inconvenienced and forced wider rounding the home turn.
YEAGER – When asked to comment on the horse’s performance, R. Wiggins said he was obliged to pressure the horse throughout the ems as it was unable to hold a position, losing ground throughout the early stages, and when asked to improve in the home straight was disappointed for a run between runners near the 300m and he was obliged to alter course back to the inside and over the final 100m the horse was doing its best work, however improved on to heels, causing him to stop riding and alter course to secure clear running. It was his view that the horse would benefit from a step up in distance.

Stewards asked Mr Powell to explain why he did not allow the horse to stride and take up a position outside the lead. He stated that his instructions were to have the horse ridden with cover as the horse performs better when able to obtain clear running later in the race. He added that with hindsight he would have been better served allowing the horse to stride. Stewards agreed with his assessment, however felt that he had erred, but not to the extent the it would render him culpable under the rules, given the manner in which the horse finished the race.
PICTURE IT – Overraced in the early stages and had to be checked from heels near the 900m.
