Race 1: Dicky Beach Surf Club Maiden Plate – 1400m
SHENVAL – Subject to further submissions, trainer T. Edmonds was fined $100 for failing to declare a rider for the horse by the prescribed time.
WULFIES LADY – Slow to begin.
IDEAL WALTZ – Jumped away awkwardly.
MAN ON THE MOVE – Raced 3 wide in the early and middle stages.
GLOBAL GURU – Raced 3 wide without cover.
PORTSEA – Apprentice S. Eilbeck reported at scale her mount was inclined to hang out when placed under pressure in the straight and proved difficult to ride.
TANA CENTURY – A post race veterinary examination of the horse, which weakened badly in the home straight, failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. Trainer D. Gafa was advised that the mare would be ineligible to compete at TAB meetings until it established form at country venues.
MISS SONADOR – When questioned regarding the poor performance, jockey P. Hammersley stated that the filly never travelled comfortably throughout the race and failed to run on when placed under pressure and, in his opinion, was most disappointing. Trainer S. O’dea agreed with jockey Hammersley’s assessment and in view of tonight’s performance it was his intention that the filly be sent for an immediate spell.
Race 2: National First Aid And Training Institute Benchmark 70 H'cap – 2200m
CLASSIC STAR – Examined by the veterinary surgeon at the barriers and cleared to start.
VALTARI – A pre race veterinary examination of the horse which arrived late on course, cleared it to race. Stewards questioned L. Tarrant regarding the tactics adopted. Apprentice Tarrant stated it was not his intention to race as far back in the field tonight, however from the wide barrier and after being slow to begin, instead of pressuring his mount in the early stages and being caught wide he elected to take hold and find a position closer to the rail at the rear of the field with cover.
DANISH HOMBRE - A pre race veterinary examination of the horse which arrived late on course, cleared it to race. Stewards questioned R. Fradd regarding the tactics adopted in the middle stages and whether he could have allowed his mount to stride forward to the lead rather than race outside BIRDIE BLITZ and slightly in advance of that runner. Jockey Fradd explained he was obliged to work hard to cross to a position outside the leader approaching the 1600m. He added that he attempted to settle his mount outside BIRDIE BLITZ but soon afterwards the gelding commenced to overrace and rather than ride forward to cross that runner he maintained his position to its outside as he felt applying more pressure to his mount at that stage would have been detrimental to its chances. Stewards noted the explanation.
KURRAJONG DRAGON – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Had to be restrained from heels near the 1600m.
BIRDIE BLITZ – Made contact with the running rail for some distance from the 1000m until passing the 900m.
Race 3: Davies Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Maiden H'cap – 1000m
JERRYVIL – Jockey A. Best was fined $200 for attempting to weigh out in a set of colours that, in the view of the stewards, were not of an appropriate standard.
DAINTY GEM – Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.
BELLA SASH – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
ZOOMING AWAY – Raced 3 wide throughout.
Race 4: M & S Reynold Kitchens & Cabinets Class 3 Plate – 1000m
KAREIGA – Slow to begin.
STICK WITH ME – Began awkwardly.
ROYAL PHYSICIAN – A charge of careless riding was issued against apprentice T. Brooker, rider of HIDDEN PLEASURES, in that near the 700m she permitted her mount to shift in when not sufficiently clear of ROYAL PHYSICIAN, which was tightened for room between her mount and HIDDEN ROAD, resulting in apprentice S. Eilbeck having to take hold of ROYAL PHYSICIAN and vacate her rightful running. Subsequently, after hearing submissions from apprentice Brooker and her master, Mr S. Kendrick, stewards did not sustain the charge due to the contribution of HIDDEN ROAD moving out slightly and the effort made by apprentice Brooker to correct her mount.
Race 5: Mullins It Benchmark 75 H'cap – 1300m
GET ON – As R. Wiggins was to be overweight, M. McGillivray was substituted as the rider of the horse. R. Wiggins was fined $200.
UMASAGA – Slow into stride.
REVITALISE – Began awkwardly and was momentarily unbalanced in the saddle. Had to be eased to avoid the heels of PUTAPAVONIT, which shifted out over the final stages. A. Fancourt, rider of PUTAPAVONIT, was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.
Race 6: Allchin Air Conditioning/Pelican Motors Service Centre Class 1 H'cap – 1200m
CASINO GARDENS – Declared a late scratching at 5.05 on veterinary advice.
RUNNING THUNDER – Slow to begin. Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.
TAHITIAN PRINCE – Steadied from the heels when overracing near the 700m. Raced 3 wide throughout.
IT’S VEGAS BABY – Jockey B. Pengelly was dislodged from his mount on pulling up. B. Pengelly was examined by the doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagement.
Race 7: Swim Between The Flags Class 1 H'cap – 1600m
BLACK SALT – Stood flatfooted at the start and lost ground.
GAME OF FAME – When questioned regarding the poor performance, jockey B. Pengelly stated that his mount was slow into stride and never travelled comfortably throughout and felt awkward in its action when placed under pressure in the home straight. A post race veterinary examination of the mare failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. A swab sample was taken. Trainer J. McLachlan undertook to report to stewards any abnormality that comes to his attention that may have affected the performance. Upon receipt of this, stewards will consider what action if any they will take against the horse.
PINK CHAPERONE – Raced 3 wide without cover.
