FASTQUEST – When questioned as to the tactics adopted App B. Appo explained that he anticipated racing in a forward position however, after beginning well found himself left in the lead. App Appo stated the horse then overraced badly and continued to get its head up and despite his efforts it refused to settle. App Appo further stated that he had hoped another runner may cross, which would allow him to obtain cover however, this did not occur. When asked why he had not given the horse more rein and allow it to stride he stated he was concerned that had he done so it would have continued to bolt and he was concerned he may have established an extensive lead, which may have resulted in the horse not finishing the race off. Trainer B. Lockwood stated that the horse was second up today over 1600m however, in his opinion had done enough work to be competitive. Mr Lockwood added the horse had been somewhat difficult in its work and at times has proved hard to settle. Mr Lockwood did express his disappointment with the ride and said it may have been better for App Appo to allow the horse more rein to see if it would have settled better. Stewards advised App Appo that the manner in which he rode in restraining FASTQUEST for as long as he did, may have been unreasonable and that he had erred in not at least allowing the horse a little more rein in an endeavour to see if it settled better and race more tractably.
