GENERAL

As D. Smith was injured and R. Maloney was ill Stewards permitted rider changes as per the
Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 1: Phelan Ready QTIS 2YO Maiden Handicap – 1200m

As App J. Huxtable was delayed due to transport difficulties Stewards permitted S. Cormack to be substituted as the rider of HAIRDO.

The start was delayed 2½ minutes when SIZZLING RIVER and STELLAR WAY had to be resaddled behind the gates.

MISHANI QUEEN – Began very awkwardly almost dislodging its rider and lost significant ground. Jockey L. Tilley reported he made heavy contact to his left knee with the barrier partition on jumping. Jockey Tilley confirmed he was fit to fulfil his remaining engagements.

BANGERS AND MAYO – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped READY FOR MAGIC on jumping.

READY FOR MAGIC – Bumped on jumping.

ATOMIC FEATHER – Momentarily hampered between runners shortly after the start.  Forced wider near the 800m when SIZZLING RIVER commenced to overrace and was shifted away from the heels of STELLAR WAY. Cast the off fore plate in running.

QUEEN SWEEPER – Overraced in the early stages.

SIZZLING RIVER – Raced keenly in the early stages and raced greenly throughout.

Race 2: Consular QTIS 3YO Handicap – 1600m

Stewards considered an objection lodged by D. Griffin the rider of STUTTERING which finished second against BETTER ETHICS (J. Bayliss) being declared the winner on the grounds of alleged interference in the home straight. Stewards were of the opinion that near the 200m there was a minor shift out by BETTER ETHICS, resulting in STUTTERING being taken out marginally and then inside the final 100m BETTER ETHICS raced greenly, continued to shift wider on the course and caused STUTTERING to be inconvenienced and shifted wider. When considering the degree of interference suffered by STUTTERING and noting the long neck margin Stewards could not be satisfied to alter the placings and therefore dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s placings.

DARK ARCHER – Began awkwardly.

VIOLET – Slow into stride. Overraced approaching the 1200m and was then obliged to steady from heels near the 1100m.

REDSTONE – After being caught wide early its rider elected to improve and settled in a position outside the lead near the 900m

LEADBURN LION – Overraced in the early and middle stages. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which performed poorly, revealed no apparent abnormalities.

STUTTERING - Lost the off side hind plate in running.

SOUTHERN SWING – When asked to explain the tactics adopted Jockey R. Stewart explained that his instructions were to be positive on the horse however after pulling very hard in the early stages and he then elected to press forward. Jockey Stewart added after being caught three wide in the middle stages he was of the opinion REDSTONE, which was racing outside the leader, would progress forward and lead the race. When this did not eventuate he was obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event. Jockey Stewart further stated that SOUTHERN SWING was dropping back in distance in today’s event and he therefore elected to allow the gelding to stride forward from the 600m. Stewards noted his explanation.
