Eagle Farm 14/8/2021 Race 7

TOP ME UP AGAIN – Trainer Brian Smith reported that following the geldings disappointing performance, an endoscopic examination was performed and the horse was found to be suffering from an ulcerated soft pallet, which in the veterinary surgeons opinion had a negative effect on the performance. Stewards ordered that TOP ME UP AGAIN is required to officially trial prior to next start.

GENERAL

Stewards gave permission for the following horses to be ridden 0.5kg overweight
Race 1          HARD REYVA – B Nothdurft
Race 4          MADAM AVA – B Nothdurft

Race 1: SCTC MEMBERSHIP Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap 1000 metres

DELLVAK – Over-raced after passing the 800m, obliged to shift wider to avoid heels and raced wide from this point onwards. Became awkward in its action from the 300m and weakened badly from that point onwards. After passing the winning post the gelding fell, dislodging jockey Micheal Hellyer, the veterinary surgeon quickly tended to the DELLVAK and the gelding was pronounced deceased shortly afterwards. Stewards interviewed both trainer Andrew Cowell and jockey Micheal Hellyer regarding the horses history and ordered blood and urine samples to be taken from DELLVAK.

HARD REYVA – Slow to begin. Raced greenly when under pressure in the home straight.

Stewards questioned apprentice M Castle, the rider of CONQUER THE STARS, in relation to this incident, she stated that she had applied the whip to CONQUER THE STARS during the early part of the home straight and was not aware that FOREIGN TERRITORY had improved to her outside until her whip made contact with that runners head after passing the 300m. Stewards examined the video coverage of the event in the presence of apprentice Castle and were satisfied that the incident had been accidental as the whip action adopted when she struck the head of FOREIGN TERRITORY was unchanged from the occasions the whip was applied prior to and subsequent to this application. Stewards also took into account the relative inexperience of Apprentice Castle, however she was nonetheless advised to be mindful of rider and horse welfare when applying the whip to her mounts.
