Gold Coast 8 January 2024 - Trainer’s representative for the C. Waller stable, Mr B. Killion, advised that following the disappointing performance of SHA OF GOMER the gelding would now be sent for a spell.
 
 
GENERAL
 
Stewards approved the following overweights:
Race 6. M. Rodd +0.5kg
 
Jockey R. Maloney was examined by the club doctor and cleared to fulfil his engagements at today’s meeting.
 
 
Race 1: TAB CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1600 Metres
 
MASTER MARKO (NZ) – Began awkwardly.
 
SPEED MAP – Held up rounding the home turn before being disappointed for a run leaving the 400m, and then was restrained across heels approaching the 300m in order to secure clear running.
 
PARISIAN LADY – Bumped and hampered shortly after the start. Over-raced in the early stages.
 
 
Race 2: HAPPY 70TH KERRY HICKEY BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP 1800 Metres
 
END OF MONTH (NZ) – Significantly slow to begin.
 
GOOGAZ – Approaching the 1600m shifted out and bumped LIVINGSTONES after having to be steadied from the heels of STEP ON FIRE when that runner was restrained after crossing to the lead. Apprentice McGillivray the rider of STEP ON FIRE was advised to show greater care when shifting ground.
 
TONI TOO (NZ) – Raced wide in the early stages before being permitted to stride forward to the position outside the leader at the 1100m. Raced in restricted room shortly after entering the home straight between GOOGAZ and STEP ON FIRE which shifted out. Apprentice D. McGillivray the rider of STEP ON FIRE was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) for this incident.
 
LIVINGSTONES – Bumped and forced wider leaving the 1600m.
 
STEP ON FIRE – Shifted out upon entering the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a minor abrasion to the point of the left hip. Trainer G. Sitek advised stewards that in his opinion gelding failed to handle the heavy track conditions.
 
 
BIG HITTER – Approaching the 350m had to be steadied and directed away from the heels of GOOGAZ when STEP ON FIRE shifted out and forced TONI TOO and GOOGAZ wider.
 
Race 3: CALOUNDRA RSL BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP 1000 Metres
 
MR BROSE – Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight. Apprentice E Lang was fined $300 pursuant to AR 132(7)(a)(ii)
 
HE'S FOR THE GIRLS – Began awkwardly.
 
Race 4: PROTECTORAL QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP  1000 Metres
 
BEAU'S GIRL – Fractious before the start and the began awkwardly.
 
DAISY'S PRIDE – Bumped at the start.
 
GYPSY POWER – As jockey R. Wiggins was indisposed, he was replaced by jockey J. Lloyd.
 
CANDY RAIDAR – Trainer C. Anderson was fined $100 under LR 67(1) for the late declaration of rider. Bumped at the start.
 
Race 5: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP  1400 Metres
 
ADONISEA – After leaving the 400m, bumped heavily on a number of occasions when LAST CHANCE SALOON shifted out and continued to be buffeted until the 300m. Approaching the 200m, had its hindquarters bumped by LAST CHANCE SALOON and became unbalanced.
 
LAST CHANCE SALOON – Approaching the 350m attempted to force a run between CABLE TIE and ADONISEA, contacting ADONISEA, causing both runners to become unbalanced and resulting in LAST CHANCE SALOON having to be severely checked from the heels of CABLE TIE. Apprentice D. McGillivray, in the presence of senior rider D. Smith, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding pursuant to AR 131(a) in that as the rider of LAST CHANCE SALOON he rode in a careless manner in that at a point leaving the 400m he directed his mount out across the heels of CABLE TIE making heavy contact with ADONISEA in an attempt to force that horse wider in order to force a run where was insufficient room between CABLE TIE and ADONISEA, causing heavy bumping between LAST CHANCE SALOON and ADONISEA. Apprentice McGillivray then continue to direct his mount out resulting in apprentice McGillivray’s elbow making contact with apprentice J. Franklin, causing further bumping between those horses and causing LAST CHANCE SALOON to be dangerously placed on the heels of CABLE TIE and causing LAST CHANCE SALOON to be check at the 300m. Apprentice D. McGillivray’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 18 days, to commence midnight the 7th January 2024 up to and including the 25th January 2024. Apprentice McGillivray was advised of his right of appeal. Checked at the 200m when disappointed for a run between CABLE TIE and ADONISEA when both of those runners shifted ground.
 
APPLECROSS – Raced three wide throughout. Laid in rounding the home turn.
 
CABLE TIE – Underwent a veterinary examination behind the barriers after blood was found to be present in its mouth and was clear to start by the veterinary official after the gelding was found to have minor laceration to its tongue. Laid out under pressure leaving the 200m.
 
A BIG CHANCE – Slow to begin.
 
MOOLOOLABA (NZ) – Laid in under pressure approaching the 150m and had to be corrected by its rider.
 
Race 6: BARRIER REEF POOLS MAIDEN PLATE 1000 Metres
 
BUTE MOVES – Slow to begin and was then hampered shortly after.
 
FLEUR DE VIE – Bumped at the start.
 
VAN D'ORO – Raced three wide throughout.
 
VIGANOTTO – Raced three wide until approaching the 500m.
 
BELEGATO (NZ) – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Held up rounding the home turn. Rider M. Rodd reported that his whip became entangled in the horse’s mane, and he was unable to utilise it between the 250m and 150m.
 
LAYDOWNLILY – Raced three wide throughout.
