Race 2: HEADLAND GLASS CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1800 M

LA ROSETTA – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Apprentice B. Youngberry dropped her whip near the 200m.

SAVVY BEE (NZ) – As the nasal strip which was part of SAVVY BEE’s declared gear became loose pre-race and could not be re-attached, SAVVY BEE subsequently raced without it. Laid in for the majority.

Race 3: PICKERING BOOKKEEPING & ACCOUNTING SERVICES BM68 HANDICAP 1000 M

Correct weight was delayed to allow Stewards, in the company of rider T. Brooker, to view the footage of the start of the event to ascertain whether MILESTONE was afforded a fair start. Stewards were satisfied that MILESTONE reared as the start was effected and other than for its own barrier manners, had been afforded a fair start. Correct weight was subsequently declared on the semaphored numbers.

MILESTONE – Reared as the start was effected and lost significant ground. Trainer J. Healy was advised the filly would need to obtain a further barrier certificate prior to racing again. Trainer J. Healy advised consideration would be given to MILESTONE’s immediate racing future.

Race 4: RACE ZONE RACING SUPPLIES 0 - 58 HANDICAP 1000 M

MINOR KEY – Slow to begin. Inconvenienced near the 500m when REVITUP CHARLIE shifted out across heels to improve. Near the 300m, was obliged to alter course in order to secure clear running.

VREDEFORT (NZ) – Bumped at the start.

CAPIANA – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped VREDEFORT, and as a result lost ground. Inconvenienced near the 500m when REVITUP CHARLIE shifted out across heels to improve.

BRAVE COWBOY BILL – Rider M. Du Plessis reported that in his opinion, the gelding failed to handle the rain-effected track conditions.

REVITUP CHARLIE – Over-raced badly in the early and middle stages and had to be checked from heels approaching the 600m, trainer T Thomas was advised that a warning would be placed on the mares racing manners.. Rider K. Zechner was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(i) for applying the whip in consecutive strides before the 100m.

SHELLY'S ACE – Began awkwardly. Lost its off-side winker shortly after entering the home straight.

Race 5: RUMBA BEACH RESORT BM68 HANDICAP 1400 M

CALICO JACK – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped SUNLORD. Near the 800m, over-raced onto heels, clipped a heel and blundered badly almost dislodging its rider.

SUNLORD – Trainer J. Bruce advised of a change of tactics that it would be the intention for SUNLORD to be ridden with cover if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly. Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped CALICO JACK.

MAPLE DOOR – Began awkwardly and lost ground.

MONASTERY – Bumped at the start.

THE TORQUE FACTOR – A post-race veterinary examination revealed cardiac arrythmia. Trainer S. NIGHTCAPPED – Trainer J. Bruce advised of a change of tactics that it would be the intention to have NIGHTCAPPED further forward if circumstances permit. Ridden accordingly.

Race 6: MCGARRY EQUINE VETERINARY SERVICES CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1600 M

LORD DANILO – Slow to begin. Over-raced from the 1000m until approaching the 600m. Had to restrain from heels near the 100m when PARISIENNE PIPER (R. Thorburn) shifted in under pressure. Apprentice R. Thorburn was advised to exercise greater care.

POUTCHEK (GB) – Held up on entering the home straight until the 150m. Stewards questioned Jockey Thompson regarding his riding from the 600m where it appeared there was opportunity to shift wider on the track and follow RUSSIANTOTHEPOST, which would then, upon entering the home straight have afforded him the option to shift wider and secure clear running, rather than when approaching the 500m, his decision to improve inside the heels RUSSIANTOTHEPOST and follow EIGHT CYLINDERS. Jockey Thompson explained that at this point of the event, he felt that as RUSSIANTOTHEPOST had over-raced in the early stages and had not improved quickly after being shifted to the outside of EIGHT CYLINDERS, he had assessed that EIGHT CYLINDERS which in his opinion was still traveling strongly, was the better option to follow at this point. He added, in hindsight, he accepted that shifting out and following RUSSIANTOTHEPOST would have been a more appropriate option. Stewards gave consideration to the explanation tendered, and accepted that this had been an error in judgement, however not an error which was so unreasonable that Jockey Thompson should be held culpable under the rules, and therefore took no further action.

BETATHANEVA – Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight.

LADY WINDERMERE – Slow to begin. Blundered near the 600m. Rider J. Bayliss reported his mount failed to pick up after blundering and continued to weaken in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

PARISIENNE PIPER – Apprentice rider R. Thorburn pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR131(b) and was fined $400 for failing to ride out PARISIENNE PIPER over the final strides of the race.

EIGHT CYLINDERS (NZ) – Began awkwardly.

Race 7: TAB BM58 HANDICAP 1800 M

HELL FOLLOWS – Slow to begin.

GULF OF SAROS – Slow to begin. Raced three-wide without cover in the early stages before being ridden forward to assume a position in the lead passing the 1200m. Trainer T. Miller was reprimanded pursuant to AR106(2) for presenting GULF OF SAROS to race with incorrect gear.

Race 8: BARRIER REEF POOLS MAIDEN PLATE         1800 M

COOLOUNDRA – Raced three-wide without cover in the early stages.

PROMISES MADE (NZ) – Weakened from the 600m and failed to complete the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed cardiac arrythmia. The representative for trainer C. Waller was advised that a veterinary clearance, inclusive of ECG results and a satisfactory cardiac auscultation veterinary report post gallop of at least 1000m would be required prior to PROMISES MADE (NZ) being permitted to race again.
