TAP HIGH – Trainer K. Taplin advised that TAP HIGH would attempt to settle further forward in today’s event. Stewards questioned jockey P. Hamblin regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages after both TAP HIGH and VREDEFORT (NZ) set a fast tempo in the early and middle stages. Jockey P. Hamblin advised that he had been instructed to ride the horse in a more forward position, he stated that his mount commenced to over race passing the 1600m and continued to do so despite his efforts until leaving the 1000m. Stewards after viewing the patrol footage accepted the explanation from jockey P. Hamblin.

VREDEFORT (NZ) – Stewards questioned apprentice R. Thorburn regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages, which resulted in VREDEFORT (NZ) and TAP HIGH setting a fast tempo in the early and middle stages. Apprentice R. Thorburn advised that he was instructed to settle in a midfield position with cover. However, from the 1600m when he was attempting to restrain the gelding, VREDEFORT (NZ) commenced to over race, and despite his efforts was unable to have the horse settle and improved outside the lead. He further added that he elected, from a point near the 1100m, to allow the horse to stride, rather than continuing to restrain and fight the gelding. After considering this explanation and viewing the video footage, stewards accepted that apprentice R. Thorburn had attempted to restrain his mount from the 1600m, however, given his instructions had been to obtain cover and that the horse was stepping up in distance, stewards advised apprentice Thorburn that he had erred in riding his mount aggressively during the first 200m. However, stewards were not satisfied in the circumstances that this error was so unreasonable as to be culpable under the rules and therefore took no further action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

GOOD PHILLY – Tightened for room and steadied shortly after the start.

NOTES (NZ) – Held up for clear running from near the 300m and the 200m.
