General:
Due to delays to the start of races 1 and 3, the starting times were amended as follows:
Race 1 – 1.20pm
Race 2 – 1.55pm
Race 3 – 2.55pm
Race 4 – 3.30pm
Race 5 – 4.05pm
Race 1: FOODWORKS/MITRE 10 BENCHMARK 55 H’CAP – 900M
1st – COUNT KAWANA 2nd – JEPTOO 3rd – JUST ELUSIVE 4th – WILLOW MIST
The start of this race was delayed when JEPTOO (App. H. Phillips) dislodged its rider prior to the start and galloped for some distance before being recaptured. JEPTOO was examined by the veterinary surgeon and cleared to take its place in the field. Apprentice Phillips was examined by the ambulance officers and cleared to fulfill her engagements.
CHOSEN COURT – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
WILLOW MIST – Overraced for a short distance leaving the 700m when being restrained from the heels of COUNT KAWANA (App. M. Murphy), which shifted in when insufficiently clear. Apprentice Murphy was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.
JUST ELUSIVE – Raced ungenerously for a short distance when being restrained from heels leaving the 600m.
CASSE SAXET – Hung out near the 400m and bumped BARNTOWN.
BARNTOWN – Bumped near the 400m, became unbalanced and blundered. KOORAGAN LANE, which was following, had to be severely checked to avoid heels.
Race 2: WILSHIRE & CO QTIS MAIDEN PLATE – 900M
1st – CAVALIA 2nd – RED’S THE GO 3rd – UNIT 4th – JAMAICA BLU
MARREW BAR NONE – Began awkwardly and made contact with the gates. Hung out near the 400m. Apprentice H. Phillips reported the filly raced greenly throughout.
CAVALIA – Began awkwardly.
JAMAICA BLU – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
COMMANDING FORCE – Raced ungenerously in the early stages. Hung out severely from the 400m and took no further competitive part in the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities. Trainer C. Byrne was advised the gelding must trial to the satisfaction of stewards prior to racing again.
Race 3: TOPX 3YO & UP MAIDEN PLATE – 1200M
1st – TIN’S POCKET 2nd – WARDEH 3rd – DUPRE 4th – OUR BOY MONTY
The start of this race was delayed when TIN’S POCKET was reluctant to proceed to the start. Trainer B. Hudson was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding’s pre-race behavior.
The start of this race was further delayed when CHAMPAGNE LILLY broke through front of the barriers and galloped a considerable distance before being recaptured. CHAMPAGNE LILLY was declared a late scratching at 2.46pm by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice. All monies invested on CHAMPAGNE LILLY were ordered to be refunded, with the following deductions applicable:
2 cents in the dollar for the winner #5
4 cents in the dollar for the place of winner #5
5 cents in the dollar for second place #10
4 cents in the dollar for third place #7
Starting prices are subject to deductions.
THE SPIRIT OF JAZZ – Stood flat footed at the start and lost ground. Hung out near the 400m.
MUSICIAN – Pulled up near the 700m as jockey L. McCoy felt there was something amiss with the gelding’s action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near hind. Trainer S. Burns was advised he will need to obtain a veterinary clearance for MUSICIAN prior to the gelding racing again.
DUPRE – Raced wide throughout. Jockey B. Appo was reprimanded for using the whip more than five times prior to the 100m.
TIN’S POCKET – Hung out from the 400m.
Race 4: JEFF HANNAFORD TEXAS CUP OPEN H’CAP – 1200M
1st – A TISSUE A TISSUE 2nd – SEZWHO 3rd – AIMALAC BURRA 4th – JAM TIN
SMOOTH TALKER – Knuckled at the start. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
SEZWHO – Slow to muster speed in the early stages.
MORE OF THE ZAIM – Disappointed for a run near the 100m.
A TISSUE A TISSUE – Laid in under pressure in the home straight and brushed JAM TIN near the 50m. When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer A. Gray reported that the gelding was dropping back in class and was suited by today’s firm track. Stewards noted the explanation.
WRITTENINTHERAIN – When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, jockey L. McCoy reported that in her opinion the gelding was not suited by the tight track at today’s event. Stewards noted the explanation.
Race 5: MICK MCGRATH BENCHMARK 60 H’CAP – 1200M
1st – SHADOW SHOW 2nd – MY MOVE 3rd – KATIKA 4th – DANGEROUS DANICA
MY MOVE – Slow to begin.
SHE’S RICH – Raced wide throughout.
DANGEROUS DANICA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Jockey N. Evans reported he dropped his whip near the 100m. When questioned regarding the performance, which was below market expectations, trainer T. Dougall reported the mare was stepping up in class in today’s event, as her recent starts had been in restricted class races, which he felt explained today’s performance. Stewards noted the explanation.
