Stewards accepted the explanation tendered for the late declaration of riders as follows: Race 4: FIERY JEST, Jockey G. Kliese; CORONATION JOURNEY, Jockey J. Felix.
GENERAL
Jockey C. Lennon was cautioned against the practice of striking his mount with the whip during the loading process.
RACE 1: Gilbert Bow Maiden Handicap – 1000 metres
1st - MORE GEORGE 2nd - RUN WINDRED 3rd - PROSPERUM 4th - BAR BABY
PROSPERUM – Began awkwardly.
BAR BABY – Dipped at the start.
WHO’S RIGHT – Was buffeted between runners shortly after the start.
CHANGEINTHEFORTUNE – For a short distance approaching the 600 metres was reluctant to hold its position when racing tight to the inside of another runner. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance Jockey D. Simmons said that after beginning only fairly his mount never travelled comfortably at any stage, was inclined to hang out and did not respond to his riding.
LOGAN’S RUN – Raced wide without cover throughout.
HONEST FRIEND – Raced greenly when struck with the whip shortly after straightening, resulting in Apprentice KAI becoming unbalanced.
Following the running of this race the track rating was upgraded to a Good 3 retrospectively.
RACE 2: Townsville Racing 19 & 31 December Class 3 Plate - 1000 metres
1st - WE FOUND IT 2nd - FOUR JAYS 3rd - FIELD MARSHALL 4th - HOUSE OF HINGIS
CANONIZED, which was resuming from a lengthy spell, underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was passed fit to start.
MAGIC SAM – Sustained a laceration to the off hind leg in the float en route to the course. Stewards ordered the late withdrawal of the gelding at 12.16 p.m.
CROTCHET – Slow to begin.
LAGUNA VISTA – Crowded for room at the start.
WICKED CRIME – When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey C. Lennon said that after being crowded at the start he lost the use of his offside iron for a short distance, his mount never travelled comfortably at any stage thereafter and failed to respond to his vigorous urgings. Trainer R. Long expressed disappointment with the performance and undertook to report back in the days subsequent. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
FOUR JAYS – Leaving the 600 metres, when racing keenly, shifted out and bumped another runner.
SHYCHENKA – Bumped leaving the 600 metres and was then obliged to race 3 wide without cover.
REVACIOUS – For a short distance after the start was inclined to race ungenerously.
HOUSE OF HINGIS – Jockey M. Morris dropped his whip at the 100 metres.
Race 3: MAKK Electrical QTIS 3YO Maiden Handicap - 1200 metres
1st - CRAIGLEA DIXIE 2nd - HAMUNAPTRA 3rd - DAWN’S DIAMOND 4th - MARINE ON PARADE
DAESY DANORO – Slow to begin then failed to stretch out in the early stages.
MARINE ON PARADE – Slow to begin. Held up in the early part of the home straight and had to be shifted out wider to obtain clear running.
BOLT ON BY – Began awkwardly with its head up. Raced keenly throughout the early and middle stages.
CRAIGLEA DIXIE – Slow to begin. Bumped shortly after straightening.
DAWN’S DIAMOND – Began awkwardly.
SIF – Raced 3 wide without cover in the early and middle stages.
VALENTINE’S DAY – Rounding the home turn was disappointed for a run, then was held up on the heels of another runner for a short distance.
POWER UP – Shortly after straightening bumped with another runner.
RACE 4: NQ Excavations Class 1 Handicap - 1300 metres
1st – NO BITING 2nd - DUKE CELESTE 3rd - RULISTIC/CORONATION JOURNEY (dh)
WINDSOR GOLD – After riding in Race 4, Jockey M. Abe became ill, was examined by the Ambulance officers and found to be suffering from dehydration. Jockey N. Yadi was substituted as rider of the gelding.
EIRIAN – Blundered at the start.
HELOW TUCKER – Began awkwardly with its head up. Raced wide throughout.
SERIKOS FLYER – Slow to begin.
CORONATION JOURNEY – Bumped at the start.
ZALSNAAP – Bumped at the start.
CONCERT IMAGE – Rounding the first turn, near the 1000 metres, had to be steadied when momentarily crowded for room.
RACE 5: Searles Garden Products Class 6 Plate - 1200 metres
1st - MOUNTAIN VIEW 2nd - HORACIO 3rd - I’M MARIAH 4th - SERGEANT SHRIVER
MOLONGLE DREAM – Late scratching, at 7.45 a.m., by order of the stewards when no rider was available at the weight.
I’M MARIAH – Slow to begin.
ASTRONAUT – Began awkwardly.
SEQUONIS – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
RISE TO THE TOP – Bumped shortly after the start. Rounding the home turn had to be steadied when momentarily inconvenienced.
SERGEANT SHRIVER – Bumped shortly after the start. Rounding the turn near the 1000 metres, when racing keenly, improved onto heels and had to be steadied. Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the home straight.
MOUNTAIN VIEW – On returning to scale Jockey F. Edwards reported that his mount was inclined to pull up appoaching the winning post.
RACE 6: Master Health Services Open Handicap - 1300 metres
1st - KING MAGNUSSON 2nd - ACCIDENTAL 3rd - HOLEY GADOLEY 4th - BOOM SHA LA
KING MAGNUSSON – Bumped at the start. Stewards interviewed trainer S. Massingham relative to the gelding attempting to savage BOOM SHA LA (W. D’Avila) on 3 occasions, at the 1000 metres, 800 metres and 600 metres. Mr Massingham indicated that he would experiment with the gear on the gelding. The matter was adjourned to a later date.
PRETTY GULLY – Bumped at the start. Passing the 200 metres had to be steadied when crowded for room.
CHATEAU DETTORI – Raced wide throughout.
HARD LIQUOR – Raced 3 wide without cover.
FIVE O’CLOCK – Began awkwardly.
ARCATRAN – Held up for clear running in the early part of the home straight.
RACE 7: Tackleworld Townsville BenchMark 60 Handicap - 1609 metres
1st – ASSERTIVE LOVE 2nd - GAINSFORD 3rd - CRACOW 4th - ROSE IN BLOOM
GAINSFORD - The start was delayed when both hind plates had to be refitted. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
SHOW US A SMILE – Slow to begin.
CRACOW – Slow to begin.
THE PRINCIPAL – Slow to begin. Raised wide throughout.
MY GIRL CHARLIE – Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly.
ROCHALLOR – Passing the 1400 metres had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room. When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey F. Edwards explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding in a forward position, in accordance with its established race pattern. He said that when the pace quickened he was only able to maintain a midfield position, where his mount travelled fairly throughout, however when placed under pressure in the straight failed to respond to his urgings and was disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had sustained lacerations to both hind legs.
VENCEREMOS – Rounding the home turn had to be steadied when crowded for by GAINSFORD (Jockey D. Simmons), which shifted out. Jockey Simmons was told to exercise more care in future. Raced in restricted room in the early part of the home straight and had to be shifted to the outside to obtain clear running.
