General
Race 3 – Due to an administrative error blinkers were not included as part of the THE WAITERS EYE’s gear. Stewards released this information via social media and on-course patrons were advised via public address.

Race 1: BRIGHTER LIVES HOSPITAL FOUNDATION QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP 1000m

Race 2: PAY IT FORWARD IN MARCH MAIDEN HANDICAP 1609m

KOONUNGA HILL – Slowly away after hesitating as the start was effected. Not fully tested in the home straight when unable to obtain clear running. App K Swaffer advised her instructions were to attempt to begin positively and then settle the gelding where it was comfortable in the run. Trainer T Rowe confirmed the instructions and on viewing the patrol footage concurred with Stewards that App Swaffer may have erred in shifting wider in the early part of the home straight rather than remaining on the rail and attempting to secure a run to the inside of SHADOW ECLIPSE.

ONONEE (NZ) – Soon after straightening raced tight with another runner bumping on several occasions

BORROMEO – Over-raced in the early and middle stages.

MARVELLOUS HEART – Approaching the 800m was taken wider by a runner to its inside which had shifted out to avoid heels, and raced wide from that point. When questioned in relation to the improved performance Trainer B Williams stated the gelding was far more comfortable on today’s firmer surface rather than the soft track conditions of recent starts, and further that a reduction in distance last start from 1400m to 1200m due to track damage at Charters Towers on March 6 had resulted in MARVELLOUS HEART getting out of its ground in the early and middle stages before making up some ground late. Mr Williams, although surprised by the performance, stated he always felt the gelding would be better suited over longer distances.

SHADOW ECLIPSE- Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

Jockey Pengelly regained his iron near the 550m but advised that he was unable to fully test his mount in the home straight due to the discomfort in his ankle.
