ZIP TO THE MOON – Inclined to lay in throughout the event and near the 400m shifted in and made contact with MIDNIGHT CURFEW. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When questioned, jockey G. Geran stated that his mount travelled strongly to the home turn and he was confident of the horse’s chances at that point of the race. He added that his mount was inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight, resulting in him reverting to hands and heels, however the horse weakened noticeably over the final 50m.

MIDNIGHT CURFEW – Bumped near the 400m.

SEQUASI – Forced to steady leaving the 800m when tightened for room by SPINTHESONY, which was taken in by ZIP TO THE MOON. G. Geran (ZIP TO THE MOON) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift in when not fully clear.

CUBAN FURY – Bumped near the 400m.

PARADISE PINK – When questioned with regards to the riding tactics adopted and the overall performance, jockey S. Bogenhuber stated that her instructions were to be forward and to obtain cover. She added that was unable to race on the speed when runners to her inside improved quickly and rather than being caught in a 4 wide position, she elected to ease her mount and obtain cover in the second half of the field. She further added that she placed her mount under pressure from the 600m, however the filly only finished off the race fairly.

Race 4: RAY WHITE TOOWOOMBA RANGE CLASS 3 PLATE – 1200M

Trainer E. Hayes contacted Stewards to advise that DRAGON MASTER had injured its near foreleg and had swelling as a result of becoming cast in its box. Stewards subsequently ordered the late scratching of the gelding at 12.30 pm. Mr Hayes was advised that he would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for DRAGON MASTER prior to its next start.

Correct weight was delayed to allow both B. Newport (EXCEEDINGLY FINE) and E. Ljung (THE LUCKY ONE), the riders of equal 4th placegetters, to view the photo finish. After viewing the print both riders were satisfied with the judges placing’s and correct weight was declared.

DON’TCRYARGENTINA – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.

RUM TUM TUGGER – Stewards opened an inquiry into apprentice R. Payne’s riding of Rum Tum Tugger in the presence of jockey’s advocate G. Smith and trainer D. Baker. Of particular concern was the reason for that runner losing ground from the 900m whilst holding a midfield position and the horse continuing to lose ground and taking up a rearward position until approaching the home turn. Apprentice R. Payne stated that her instructions were to ride forward into a handy position, however when KASEY CHELSEA improved to her outside approaching the 900m, she took hold to allow that runner to go forward of her and as a result the horse did lose some ground. She added that approaching the 800m she raced in restricted room and again when steadying her mount it lost ground which resulted in the gelding settling further back than anticipated. She further added that she placed her mount under pressure from the 600m, which continued to then respond to her riding and finished the race off well until a point leaving the 200m when she was disappointed for a run between KASEY CHELSEA and FINNOMONY when both runners shifted ground and as a result was held up and unable to test her mount over the concluding stages. Trainer D. Baker confirmed the instructions, adding that the horse has a tendency to drop the bit and lose ground when the gelding is eased and that the horse does require to be urged along in its races to hold its position. Stewards, in considering all of the evidence before them, including a report from the veterinary surgeon, advised R. Payne that she had erred in her riding from the 800m in that when the horse began to lose ground, she should have shown more initiative to place her mount under pressure in an endeavour to improve and hold a more competitive position. In all the circumstances, Stewards did not take any further action other than to refer R. Payne’s riding to Racing Queensland’s training department for further tuition. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off foreleg. Trainer D. Baker was advised that he will be required to produce a veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next start.

ROWA’S MARK – Slow to begin.

THE LUCKY ONE – Stewards questioned apprentice E. Ljung with regards to her riding over the concluding stages. After considering all the evidence, Stewards could not be satisfied that apprentice Ljung had failed to ride her mount out to the finish line, however reminded her of her obligations at all times to ride her mounts out to the end of the race so as not to leave herself open to question.

FINNOMONY – Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight. When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance, apprentice A. Fancourt stated that her mount travelled well to the home turn, however upon straightening when she asked her mount to quicken, it put in several awkward strides and was inclined to lay in and in her opinion the horse felt sore. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have an abrasion to the outside of the off hind mid cannon which was consistent with being galloped on.

Race 5: CRACKER PRINT & PAPER CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1625M

UNION – Taken inwards by another runner near the 900m. Momentarily held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

A LADYS COMPLIMENT – Jumped awkwardly losing ground and then a short distance later was bumped by another runner. Raced wide in the early stages until a point near the 900m. When question regarding the tactics adopted in the early stages and the overall performance, apprentice N. Nishio stated his instructions were to position his mount in a forward position, however after losing ground at the start he was required to pressure his mount in an endeavour to carry out his instructions. He added that he was then caught wide until obtaining cover closer to the rail near 900m. He further added that he was obliged to place his mount under pressure from the 600m however it did not respond to his riding and proved disappointing. Stewards advised apprentice Nishio that whilst mindful of his instructions it would have been more advantageous to attempt to restrain his mount earlier than he did on this occasion in an endeavour to obtain cover and that his ride would be referred to Racing Queensland training department for further tuition. Apprentice N. Nishio pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of UNION, which was taken in tightening the running of SHOVELS, which struck the running rail and as a result lost ground. Apprentice Nishio’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 5 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday 3 January and expire at midnight on Wednesday 14 January 2015 and to be served concurrently with the period of suspension imposed in Race 8. In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account apprentice Nishio’s previous good record.

Race 6: AUDI CENTRE TOOWOOMBA CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1300M

YOU’RE SERIOUS – Slow to begin.

Race 8: MITTYS MAIDEN H'CAP – 1300M

Correct weight was delayed to establish whether LISTEN TRIST had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the patrol footage, Stewards and apprentice A. Fancourt, the rider of LISTEN TRIST, agreed that the horse which had been fractious in the barriers, reared as the start was effected and lost ground and therefore had been afforded a fair start. Trainer’s representative Mr L. Hatch was advised that LISTEN TRIST would be required to obtain a further barrier certificate before racing again.

BULLDOG’S PRIDE – Raced wide throughout.

DRIVING WHEELS – Apprentice N. Nishio pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of WICKED WOODY, which was tightened onto LISTEN TRIST, resulting in WICKED WOODY having to be checked and losing ground and LISTEN TRIST becoming unbalanced. Apprentice Nishio’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 6 meetings, with the term of suspension to commence at midnight on Saturday 3 January and expire at midnight on Friday 16 January 2015 and to be served concurrently with the period of suspension imposed in Race 5.

Bogenhuber reported at scale that her mount which was having its first start on a clockwise track, shifted out shortly after the start which required her to correct the horse and as result it lost ground.
