GENERAL
As apprentice G. Goold was ill, riding replacements were made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.
Race 1: K&R PLUMBING CLASS 2 H'CAP – 1000M
SCREAMING JET – Permitted to race in blinkers rather than winkers on the assurance of trainer M. Goodwin that the horse should carry that gear. Stewards will follow up the matter with the Trainers Service Centre. G. Geran reported that his mount felt short in its action on returning to scale. A post-race veterinary examination revealed respiratory distress consistent with the horse getting its tongue over the bit.
MISS SUGAR PUSS – Laid in from the 500m until the early stages of the home straight. On returning to scale apprentice E. Ljung reported that after being caught wide in the early stages when racing on the speed in a fast run race, she elected to restrain her mount to a position closer to the rails passing the 800m. She added that from this point the filly did not travel strongly and lost some ground on the leaders, however ran on fairly in the home straight despite laying in.
MANYANA MISS – Slow to begin. When racing ungenerously near the 900m had to be restrained for a short distance to avoid the heels of DINA’S DRAGON, which shifted in when not completely clear.
DINA’S DRAGON – Jumped away awkwardly then further hampered at the start when tightened for room.
TURBO TEDDY – Hung in throughout.
Race 2: PACIFIC SEEDS CLASS 1 H'CAP – 1200M
BEAUXBATON – Slow to begin then failed to muster early speed. On returning to scale apprentice L. Attard reported that his saddle commenced to shift backwards near the 600m which placed him in some difficulty for the remainder of the event. Stewards questioned apprentice Attard in relation to his tactics rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight. Of concern to Stewards was whether there was an opportunity for him to improve to the inside of runners to obtain clear running rather than shifting wider on the track at that point of the race. Apprentice Attard advised Stewards that whilst there was an opportunity for him to improve into the race to either side of BLETCHY BOY, he was reluctant to do so as his saddle had shifted at that point of the race and therefore he elected to shift to the outside in the home straight which he felt was the safer option given the circumstances with his saddle.
PERFECT STAR – Bounded at the start and lost ground.
GREY DERBY – Raced wide throughout. Hung out from the 500m until turning for home.
MARION MARY – Began awkwardly. Forced to steady when placed in restricted room near the 450m when commencing to weaken.
SPURSYN – Bumped by BEAUXBATON rounding the home turn and became unbalanced. Apprentice L. Attard, the rider of BEAUXBATON, was advised to exercise more care.
Race 3: PLATINUM INTERNATIONAL QTIS 3YO BM65 H'CAP – 1200M
BRAVE DAZZLER – Momentarily held up rounding the home turn.
DAZZLING HALO – Tightened for room shortly after the start and lost ground. K. Yoshida was reprimanded for using the whip in a forehand manner more than 5 times prior to the 100m.
MADGE – Bumped with another runner shortly after the start. Obliged to race three wide without cover throughout.
ISN’T HE A BEAUTY – Bumped with another runner shortly after the start. Obliged to race wide throughout. Raced ungenerously for a short distance whilst being restrained near the 800m.
TEMUJIN’S QUEEN – Bumped on jumping and became awkward.
DRINKING COCKTAILS – On returning to scale S. Bogenhuber advised that her mount travelled comfortably throughout the event, however when placed under pressure in the home straight proved disappointing. Trainer K. Kemp advised that following the disappointing performance tonight, he would review the filly’s current preparation, which may include sending the horse for a spell.
Race 4: TYRRELL’S WINES BM65 H'CAP – 1650M
Due to a clerical error the advertised distance for this race was 1625m, however, the starting distance was adjusted to 1650m when the running rail was moved out to 5m. All trainers were advised of the change in distance and were satisfied with the event being run over 1650m.
EXCITING DOLL – Slow to begin. Stewards questioned apprentice A. Fancourt as to whether there was an opportunity to maintain a trailing position behind MAUGHAN passing the 600m rather than shifting wider on the track at that point to improve. Apprentice Fancourt advised that she was instructed to improve into the race from the 700m and therefore elected to shift to the outside of MAUGHAN to improve despite the fact that that runner itself was travelling comfortably and improving into the race. Stewards advised apprentice Fancourt that in their opinion it would have been more advantageous to maintain a trailing position behind MAUGHAN rather than shift wider on the track at that point of the race, however, bearing in mind the instructions issued, accepted the explanation tendered by apprentice Fancourt.
SPORT OF KINGS – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages. Apprentice E. Ljung was reminded of her obligations regarding excessive use of the whip in a backhand manner.
Race 5: WIMMERS PREMIUM SOFT DRINKS MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M
MAJOR SCOOP – Stewards questioned apprentice A. Fancourt in relation to her tactics rounding the home turn and in the early stages of the home straight. Of concern to Stewards was whether there was an opportunity for her to improve to the inside of UNDER THE WEATHER where there was clear running rather than persisting in attempting to shift to the outside of UNDER THE WEATHER and SPANISH EYES, which resulted in her being held up for some distance. Apprentice Fancourt advised that she was instructed to attempt to get the gelding to the outside in the home straight to obtain clear running and in an endeavour to comply with these instructions, she attempted to shift to the outside of SPANISH EYES rounding the home turn, however as that runner was shifting ground she was unable to get to its outside, which resulted in her being held up before shifting to the inside to obtain clear running. Having had the opportunity to review the patrol films with Stewards, apprentice Fancourt agreed that she erred in persisting to obtain a run to the outside rather than shift to the inside sooner than she did, which would have given her an unimpeded run to the finish. As Stewards felt the ride, however, did not fall below the required standard, they took the matter no further other than to refer her riding to the Racing Queensland training department for further tuition.
FOREWARD STRIKE – A post-race veterinary examination revealed filly to have a bowed off fore tendon. Trainer M. Nolan was advised that he will be required to produce veterinary clearance for the horse prior to its next start.
SOMERSET DAWN – Made heavy contact with another runner on jumping away. Obliged to race wide throughout. Apprentice E. Ljung reported to Stewards that she was instructed to ride her mount 4th or 5th if possible, however after beginning fairly and being caught wide in the early stages, she elected to allow the filly to slide forward to a position outside FLASH MAGIC, however as that runner shifted off the fence to a one-wide position near the 1100m, this resulted in her being obliged to race three wide for the remainder of the event.
SPANISH EYES – Made heavy contact with another runner on jumping away. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
Race 6: WELLCAMP AIRPORT CLASS 4 H'CAP – 1300M
WICKED BABE – Made contact with the running rail near the 900m when racing keenly.
TAIL OF A DIVA – Connections advised that if the horse begins well it will be the intention to ride it in a forward position, and also as the horse resents excessive whip use, it will be ridden out in a strong hands and heels manner with minimal whip use. Slow to begin and then failed to muster early speed and as a result lost considerable ground.
