Race 1: Neil Mansell Concrete Maiden Plate – 1050m

SUNNY BREEZE – Stewards accepted R. Wiggins’ explanation for being unable to fulfil his engagement on the horse. Raced ungenerously for a short distance leaving the 600m when being steadied from heels.

DOVANA – Stewards accepted the explanation for the late declaration of J. King as the rider of the horse. A pre-race veterinary examination of the horse which had not started for 14 months, cleared the mare to start. Very slow to begin and lost considerable ground. Connections were advised that the horse must trial satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start.

AGAPANTHA – As B. Stewart’s arrival was delayed, G. Geran was substituted as the rider of the horse. B. Stewart was fined $100. Bumped at the start.

LORD WIVENHOE – A pre-race veterinary examination of the horse which had not started for 18 months, cleared the horse to start. Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

COCONUT BAY – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced ungenerously for a short distance leaving the 600m when being steadied from heels.

CHRISTMAS PHANTOM – Bumped at the start. Inclined to hang in throughout the event.

LADY MICAELA – Had to be steadied near the 700m when tightened for room to the inside of CHRISTMAS PHANTOM, which was taken in by HALPIN, which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.

WONUNDA – Inclined to hang in throughout the event.

ANXPENSE – Apprentice H. English was fined $100 for using her whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

HALPIN - When questioned regarding the performance, jockey M. Hellyer agreed the gelding was disappointing and indicated, in his opinion, it may have come to the end of its preparation. Trainer B. Lunney advised it was his intention to spell the horse. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any significant abnormalities.


Race 2: Seven Local News Maiden Plate – 1050m

GOTTA GET CRACKING – Tightened for room shortly after the start. Jockey W. O’Connell was severely reprimanded for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

PERZERO – Tightened for room shortly after the start. Had to be steadied near the 600m from the heels of another runner.

YOU LITTLE THIEF – Bumped shortly after the start and became unbalanced. Raced wide throughout.

YOU CAN’T FIND ME – Slow to begin and bumped shortly after the start. Held up for clear running rounding the home turn.

TRUST NO ONE – Hung out throughout.

AT THE ROUGE – Raced wide throughout.

CARDA MOJO – Apprentice S. Fawke was fined $300 for using his whip in consecutive strides prior to the 100m.


Race 3: Coca-Cola Amatil QTIS 3yo Maiden H'cap – 1200m

HIGHTOWER – Slow to begin. Had to be steadied from the heels of SECRETS SURROUND, which shifted in near the 900m. B. Newport, rider of SECRETS SURROUND, was reprimanded.

SIENNA SON – Slow to begin.

KEL’S SHADOW – Bumped shortly after the start. Raced wide throughout.

ENVY O’ MANY – Bumped shortly after the start. Raced wide throughout.

SHE’S MY ANDY - B. Stower, rider of BULLRIDER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that she failed to make sufficient effort to prevent her mount from shifting in near the 150m when insufficiently clear of SHE’S MY ANDY, which clipped heels and blundered, nearly dislodging jockey T. Banks. B. Stower was suspended from riding in races for a period of 8 days, to commence at midnight, 30 January and to expire at midnight, 7 February.

THE EQUINE BOLT – Apprentice H. Phillips was fined $500 for using her whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.


Race 4: Hot FM Maiden H'cap - 1625m

JERUSALEM – Slow to begin. Raced keenly when being restrained near the 1000m. Held up for clear running from the 500m to the 100m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

LADY MANHATTAN – Steadied from heels near the 300m.

PRECIOUS EMBERS – Hung out rounding the home turn.

SHIBA SAKURA – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Raced wide throughout.

I CAN I WILL I AM – When questioned regarding the improved performance, trainer Mr E. Hayes explained that the gelding sweated up badly prior to its last start at Toowoomba, which he felt explained the below average performance that day. He added that it was the gelding’s first start over 1600m and he felt the extra distance was to the horse’s benefit. He added he intended to aim the horse towards races over 1600m or longer going ahead with its preparation.


Race 5: Wellcamp Airport Class 3 Plate – 1625m

CALEDONIA’S CALL – Slow to begin.

BARBUDA – Slow to begin.

SAIL THE STARS – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.

TAMARIZ – Held up for a short distance approaching and rounding the home turn. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.


Race 6: Mittys Benchmark 65 H'cap – 2150m

COUP D’ETAT – Slow to begin. Raced wide from the 1000m. Bumped near the 350m. Had to be steadied leaving the 300m when awkwardly placed at heels.

OUR PLAYDOUGH - After racing keenly shifted out and allowed to stride forward from the 1200m to race outside the leader at the 800m.

DINA’S DRAGON – Raced keenly in the middle stages.

WESTERN HEIR – Raced wide from the 700m. Had to be steadied from heels approaching the 200m.

KINGSTON TIME – Raced wide from the 700m.

RABASCO – Bumped near the 350m.

QUALITY MAN – When questioned regarding the performance, jockey B. Stewart stated the gelding was slightly disappointing and, in his opinion, would have been better suited if he had been able to obtain the outright leading position.

Following this event the track rating was upgraded to Good 3.


Race 7: Dawn Osborne Florist Class 1 H'cap – 1300m

LADY ATHENA – Stewards accepted the explanation from trainer K. Stabe for the late declaration of K. Yoshida as the rider of the horse.

SIR ALBERT – Slow to begin.

ARTANIS – Raced ungenerously in the early stages. Raced wide from the 700m.

LONHRO’S SPIRIT – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

CAPITANEAR – Raced wide throughout.


Race 8: Shannon Sign Company Class 1 H'cap – 1300m

COURT EXPRESS – Slow to begin. Steadied near the 400m.

AGORA – Raced wide throughout. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

Race 9: Audi Centre Toowoomba Benchmark 75 H'cap – 120m

SPICE OF LIFE – Stood flatfooted as the start was effected. Trainer M. Kropp was advised that he must provide 2 further barrier certificates for the horse, one of which to be obtained in an official trial. B. Newport was fined $200 for using his whip more than 5 times prior to the 100m.

FILLE ARDENTE – Examined by the veterinary surgeon after being fractious behind the barriers and cleared to take its place in the field. Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced wide from the 800m.

SCENIC ROAD - Raced ungenerously in the middle stages after being restrained from heels. Held up for clear running approaching the 400m until near the 200m.

MOUNT KOSCIUSZKO – Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight and over the concluding stages had to be steadied from the heels of another runner, which prevented rider S. Eilbeck from riding her mount out in her mount out with her usual vigour.

GET THAT INDYA – Raced wide throughout.


Race 10: Australian Summer Night Jan 29 Class 2 H'cap - 1100m

MARBLE MAID - Trainer B. Currie was fined $100 for the late declaration of B. Appo as the ride of the mare.

PINBALL DAWN – Connections advised the horse would be ridden in a midfield position if circumstances permit. The horse was ridden accordingly, however raced wide throughout.

CAZNOT – Raced in restricted room near the 900m and shortly after brushed the running rail.

AUBREY’S ACE – Raced ungenerously when placed in restricted room near the 900m, and again placed in restricted room near the 800m.

SORORITY SISTER – Placed in restricted room near the 800m.

OLE PABLO – Had to be steadied when disappointed for a run entering the home straight.

RUFFO – Held up rounding the home turn. B. Ainsworth reported at scale her mount hung out throughout.

LISTANERA – Raced wide without cover throughout.

COLD AS ICE – B. Newport reported his mount was reluctant to stretch out in the early stages and ultimately proved disappointing.
