GENERAL

As B. Pengelly was riding at another venue today, he was unable to arrive on course to fulfil his engagement in Race 1, and therefore a riding replacement was made as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

The start of Race 1 was initially delayed to allow for the arrival of a replacement veterinarian on course. As a result, all races were put back one race and the start time of Race 7 was amended to 9.03pm.

The start of Race 1 was further delayed due a partial lighting failure affecting various sections of the track. As this was the second occasion on which a partial lighting failure has affected the track in the past month, this matter was referred to the Toowoomba Turf Club Chief Operations Manager. Stewards requested that a detailed explanation be provided regarding the lighting failure, including the details of any protocols which will be put in place to prevent any similar occurrences in the future.

Due to a misunderstanding, gear changes on BRASSY BELLE in Race 1 and MISHANI SHIRAZ in Race 7 were not enacted by the prescribed time. Stewards permitted BRASSY BELLE to race without blinkers or a tongue-tie, and permitted MISHANI SHIRAZ to race with blinkers on. Nevertheless, Trainer Mr. B. Currie was fined $300 for failing to enact these gear changes by the prescribed time.

Race 1: PRO-CLEAR BM65 H’CAP – 1300M

JUST AS LOYAL – Slow to begin. Jockey K. Yoshida could offer no explanation for the gelding’s seemingly disappointing performance, however he advised that the horse became somewhat agitated after saddling, which he attributed to the extended delay during the preliminary.

BRASSY BELLE – Trainer Mr. B. Currie advised that, with the blinkers off, it would be the intention for the mare to be ridden further back today. The horse was ridden accordingly.

HINCHINSTYLE – Bumped by another runner near the 250m.

BOILING – Momentarily held up near the 250m and, as a result, was forced to shift to the outside to secure clear running and, in doing so, bumped another runner.

MACHU PICCHU – Raced ungenerously whilst being restrained near the 1000m.

Race 2: HAPPILY EVER AFTER BRENDAN & GEORGIE C,G&E CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed when CHOICE SON, which became fractious upon entering the gates, was removed from the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start.

HAVRAN – Momentarily raced in restricted room near the 800m.

CHOICE SON – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

MANKINI LOVE – A pre-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which was undertaken at the request of the trainer, revealed no apparent abnormalities. The horse was therefore passed fit to start. Jockey Beau Appo was reprimanded for using his whip in a manner which raised his arm above shoulder height.

RICH TRADITION – Raced wide without cover throughout.

Race 3: WEARING MEMORIES FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 2 H’CAP – 1000M

The start of this race was delayed when REMEMBER MARY, which became fractious in the barriers, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and declared a late scratching at 7:02pm on veterinary advice. On the announcement of correct weight Stewards ordered that all monies invested on REMEMBER MARY be refunded, with the following deductions to apply to successful wagers:

22 cents in the dollar for the Win #4
18 cents in the dollar for place of winner #4
21 cents in the dollar for 2nd place #2
27 cents in the dollar for 3rd place #5

Trainer Mr. B. Azel was advised that REMEMBER MARY must perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial before being permitted to race again.

RED HOT MISS – Tightened for room shortly after the start. When questioned by Stewards regarding the seemingly disappointing performance, Apprentice G. Willoughby advised that, in her opinion, the mare was inclined to lay in and away from other runners during the middle stages and, for that reason, she formed the opinion that the horse may be better suited when able to race to the outside.  Apprentice Willoughby added that, when asked to improve into the race near the 300m, the mare failed to respond to her riding and proved disappointing. Trainer Mr. T. Pascoe was at a loss to explain the disappointing performance, and advised that the mare had pulled up well immediately following the race. Mr. Pascoe undertook to advise Stewards should anything come to light in the coming days which may explain the poor performance. Stewards noted the explanations. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.

COOL DRAFTS – Tightened for room shortly after the start. Steadied approaching the 900m.

MAKE NO MISTAKE – Raced 5 wide without cover throughout. Steadied to avoid heels near the 500m. Forced wider on the track by another runner rounding the home turn.

HIDDEN SEQUEL – Momentarily steadied when placed in restricted room approaching the 900m and, as a result, lost ground. Forced wider on the track by another runner rounding the home turn.

EVE’S JET – Hung out rounding the home turn and shifted wider on the track.

SHADWELL FLYER – Raced 4 wide without cover for the majority.

STAR OF COLUMBIA – Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

Race 4: SEDL AGENCIES BM65 H’CAP – 1625M

WOW FACTOR – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Checked to avoid the heels of ISN’T SHE ELEGANT (App. L. Kilner) when that runner shifted in approaching the finishing line when insufficiently clear. Apprentice Kilner was reprimanded as a result of this incident.

MOHAKA RIVER – Raced keenly near the 1300m, and when awkwardly placed at heels was steadied when momentarily placed in restricted room. Laid in rounding the home turn.

UNIQUE MISTIQUE – Improved onto the heels of a tiring runner near the 500m, and was steadied by its rider.

Race 5: PRYDE’S EASIFEED MAIDEN H’CAP – 1100M

On return to scale N. Tomizawa, the rider of BRUTUS, placed 4th by the Judge, lodged an objection against LOPE DE LADY (R. Williams) being placed 3rd, alleging interference over the final 100m. After taking evidence from all parties and viewing the patrol footage, Stewards were of the view that whilst LOPE DE LADY did shift out marginally over the final 100m, BRUTUS also shifted in at that point and was hampered after bumping LOPE DE LADY.  Stewards could not be satisfied that the extent of the interference could be solely attributed to the shift outwards from LOPE DE LADY, and therefore dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the Judge’s semaphored numbers.

CALCUTTA GOLD – Trainer Mr. T. Pascoe was fined $100 for failing to produce the horse’s Thoroughbred Identification Card. Slow to begin.

BUCK STOPS HERE – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

LOPE DE LADY – Tightened for room shortly after the start after receiving pressure from runners to either side. Lost a plate in running.

OUR RED DOG – Checked to avoid heels near the 900m. R. Ride, the rider of SIREEANNA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that near the 900m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of THE SCOOP (N. Fazackerley) resulting in that runner being taken inwards which resulted in OUR RED DOG (Beau Appo) being checked to avoid the heels of that runner. Jockey Ride’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 9 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 18 August 2018 and expire at midnight on Monday 27 August 2018. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Ride’s guilty plea.

BRUTUS – Tightened for room shortly after the start after receiving pressure from runners to either side. Steadied from heels and forced to shift to the outside to secure clear running in the early stages of the home straight.

FOXLEIGH – Tightened for room and checked shortly after the start. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout. R. Ride, the rider of SIREEANNA, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 137(a) in that shortly after the start she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of FOXLEIGH (App. R. Goldsbury) resulting in that runner being taken in onto BUCK STOPS HERE (K. Yoshida) which then resulted in FOXLEIGH being tightened for room and checked. Jockey Ride’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 9 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 18 August 2018 and expire at midnight on Monday 27 August 2018 to be served concurrently with the other suspension incurred in this race. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration jockey Ride’s guilty plea.

JONDY QUALO – Slow to begin.

LILLY’S JEWEL – Slow to begin. Raced 3 wide with cover throughout.

Race 6: LIVING TURF QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 1300M

LAKE HILLIER – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

TROOPER KELLY – Slow to begin. Raced with its head in the air for a short distance whilst being restrained near the 900m.

YARBOROUGH – Slow to begin.

CARPE NOCTEM – Hung out rounding the home turn.

JUST GIVEME RUBIES – Had difficulty obtaining clear running in the home straight, before shifting wider on the track inside the 100m.

Stewards inquired into the circumstances surrounding YARBOROUGH (N. Tomizawa) being checked near the 300m. Stewards found that CARPE NOCTEM (E. Ljung) laid out rounding the home turn despite the efforts of its rider, forcing JUST GIVEME RUBIES (Beau Appo) wider on the track. At that same point, TROOPER KELLY (B. Pengelly), which was racing to the outside, shifted in marginally and, as a result, was bumped on the hindquarters and shifted in. As a consequence, YARBOROUGH, which was racing in a position between JUST GIVEME RUBIES and TROOPER KELLY, was tightened for room and checked by its rider. As Stewards could not be satisfied that any one rider had ridden in a careless manner, they took the matter no further other than to report it as a racing incident.

Race 7: A&R REFRIGERATION CLASS 5 H’CAP – 1100M

DREAM OF ASCOT – Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 900m. Whilst weakening inside the 100m, the mare was placed in restricted room to the inside of MISHANI SHIRAZ which shifted in.

MISHANI SHIRAZ – Began awkwardly, and was then tightened for room shortly after the start. Steadied when awkwardly placed at heels near the 900m.

SNIPPET OF HOPE – Laid in in the home straight, and proved difficult to ride out.

APPLAUSE A STAR – Disappointed for a run passing the 200m, and was forced to shift to the outside to secure clear running.
