MISS LUCINDA – Began awkwardly. Held up from the 300m until approaching the 150m.

SUPER LEON – Began awkwardly and blundered.

SWAN ISLAND – Raced 3 wide with cover throughout.

IN HER ZONE – After arriving late on course due to transport difficulties, the mare underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start. After becoming fractious in the enclosure and making contact with the enclosure fence, the mare was examined by the veterinary surgeon upon arriving at the barriers and cleared to start. Disappointed for a run passing the 300m to the outside of YOUR OPTION and to the inside of SUPER LEON, and was then held up for clear running until passing the 50m and went to the line without being fully tested.

SOLO ARTIST – Improved onto heels approaching the 200m and had to alter course back to the inside to secure clear running.

UNTOLD SECRETS – Slow to begin. Steadied away from the heels of MISS LUCINDA approaching the 500m.

Jockey  Plumb was advised that he will require a medical clearance prior to resuming riding. Riding replacements were made in Races 3, 6 and 7 as per the Stewards Race Day Summary.

Race 3: SHANNON SIGN COMPANY BENCHMARK 60 H’CAP – 1210M

COSSIE – Had to be resaddled upon arriving at the barriers.

IT’S THYME – As the gelding had not raced for over 12 months, it underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start.

OKANAGAN MISS – Laid in passing the 800m and crowded NAKANAI.

SHINSTAR – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

MAGULI – Steadied when crowded for room by OKANAGAN MISS which shifted in passing the 1100m when not fully clear. Apprentice A. Patis, the rider of OKANAGAN MISS, was reprimanded under AR. 131(a), and was advised to give her fellow riders more clearance when crossing in similar circumstances. Failed to respond when placed under pressure passing the 400m. Jockey M. McGillivray reported that the filly only travelled fairly throughout and, when placed under pressure, proved slightly disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be exhibiting a poor post-race recovery.

NAKANAI – Raced in restricted room to the inside of MAGULI which was taken in by OKANAGAN MISS passing the 1100m. Put in an awkward stride and became unbalanced when racing in restricted room to the inside of OKANAGAN MISS passing the 800m.

Race 4: MOCO BENCHMARK 60 H’CAP – 1210M

JUST AS LOYAL – Slow to begin. Shifted out approaching the 400m when awkwardly placed at the heels of LILY OF CHINA which shifted out to improve.

VASSA BLUE – Bumped shortly after the start.

EAST ESPLANADE – Failed to respond when placed under pressure rounding the home turn. Jockey A. Mallyon reported that he did not pressure his mount over the final stages as he felt that something may have been amiss with the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in its off hind leg. Trainer B. Puckeridge was advised that the gelding will require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.

WRITE THE RULES – After beginning from a wide barrier and being ridden forward to cross runners to its inside, the filly refused to settle and raced keenly once it found the lead passing the 1000m, and again refused to settle passing the 800m when pressured by ABB ROY, which was racing to its outside.

When questioned by Stewards regarding the tactics adopted on WRITE THE RULES, jockey E. Ljung advised that she was instructed to ride the filly in a handy position and, after being ridden forward to obtain that handy position, her mount crossed runners to its inside with ease and obtained the lead. She added that when challenged by ABB ROY passing the 900m she attempted to restrain the filly to allow that runner to cross, however her mount could not be restrained and raced keenly whilst in the joint leading position. She went on to say that the filly was having its first run over 1200m today, and after being pressured in the early and middle stages, tired over the final 150m. She advised that, in her opinion, the pressure received in the middle stages may have contributed to the filly failing to run out a strong 1200m of today’s race.

Stewards further questioned Apprentice M. Shimodaira regarding the tactics adopted on ABB ROY. Apprentice Shimodaira advised that he was instructed to ride the horse in a similar manner to its previous start in which he rode the mare. He added that at a pointing passing the 900m he was unable to cross WRITE THE RULES, however as per its previous start he allowed the mare to stride along in that position without being restrained which was consistent with the manner in which he rode it previously. The trainer’s representative for M. Hemmings confirmed the instructions and was satisfied with the manner in which the mare was ridden, however Stewards advised Apprentice Shimodaira that it may have been a better option, on finding the position outside the leader, to attempt to restrain and settle in that position. Stewards, in considering the evidence, including the comments by Apprentice Shimodaira and the trainer’s representative, and noting the racing pattern of ABB ROY at its previous starts, elected to take the matter no further.

MAXBUX – Crowded for room and eased when VASSA BLUE shifted in passing the 1100m.  Apprentice N. Fazackerley, the rider of VASSA BLUE, was reprimanded under AR. 131(a) for shifting in when not fully clear.  A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the gelding had bled from both nostrils. As this was the second occasion on which the horse has bled, trainer B. Robinson was advised that it will now incur a lifetime bar from racing.

Race 5: VALE DAN O’NEILL BENCHMARK 55 H’CAP – 1870M

RICHEST – After racing in a handy position until approaching the 400m, the gelding failed to respond when placed under pressure and weakened over the concluding stages.

THE POTATO PONTIFF – Slow to begin.

KING BART – Raced 3 wide without cover in the early stages.

Race 6: NEIL MANSELL CONCRETE BENCHMARK 55 H’CAP – 1870M

ALADINA – When being crossed by ELECTRIC ELLYSE approaching the 900m, the mare had to be steadied and shift out across that runner’s heels when awkwardly placed. Jockey J. Taylor, the rider of ELECTRIC ELLYSE, was reprimanded under AR. 131(a) for shifting ground when not fully clear.

PEXBURY AVENUE – Commenced to overrace whilst racing outside the leader passing the 1400m. Raced ungenerously passing the 1100m when being restrained to allow ELECTRIC ELLYSE to cross forward of the gelding. Lost the near hind plate in running.

ELECTRIC ELLYSE – When the pace of the race steadied approaching the 1200m, the gelding commenced to race keenly and was shifted to a 3 wide position to improve, and obtained the lead passing the 900m.

Race 7: FOCUS HR BENCHMARK 52 H’CAP – 870M

As the horses were entering the saddling enclosure, it was discovered by Stewards that BEWARE and I AM COURAGE were both wearing the incorrect saddlecloths.  Both of those runners had their saddles removed and reweighed before being resaddled and entering the saddling enclosure.

The start of this race was delayed as a result of the issue with the saddlecloths.

I AM COURAGE – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

RUN THE CUTTER – Began awkwardly and shifted out and, as a result, bumped the hindquarters of GENERAL WITT and lost ground.

CUPID’S AFFAIR – As the gelding had not raced for over 12 months, it underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start.

GENERAL WITT – Bumped on the hindquarters by RUN THE CUTTER shortly after the start. Laid in and away from BEWARE approaching the 700m, and made contact with the hindquarters of CUPID’S AFFAIR.

Following the running of this race, Stewards inquired into the reason for I AM COURAGE being presented to the saddling enclosure with the incorrect saddlecloth. It was established that Apprentice A. Patis (BEWARE) and Apprentice J. Morrow (I AM COURAGE) had both collected their saddlecloths from hooks numbered 1 and 2 in the scales area before handing them to their respective trainers. This resulted in both I AM COURAGE and BEWARE being presented to the enclosure with incorrect saddlecloth numbers. After hearing evidence from Apprentice Patis, Apprentice Morrow and trainers B. Andrew and B. Brown, Stewards reprimanded all parties under AR. 227(a) for their negligence. In determining penalty, Stewards were mindful of the delay in the weigh out process and the current restrictions relating to the location of the jockeys rooms to the weight out area. Stewards were also mindful that the saddlecloths may have been placed on the incorrect hooks.

Race 8: TAB QTIS 2YO H’CAP – 870M

Following the running of Race 7, trainer M. Boland made application for both DREAM CANDY and RYANO, which were engaged in Race 8, to have blinkers added to their gear. After hearing submissions from Mr. Boland, Stewards acceded to his request, noting that both of those runners were 2 year olds having their first race starts today, and bearing in mind the advice from Mr. Boland that he made the gear amendment request with Racing Australia on Monday 13 April 2020 prior to the prescribed deadline. Stewards advised Mr. Boland that whilst they would permit the gear change today, they will be confirming with Racing Australia that his alleged gear  request had been made with Racing Australia on Monday 13 April 2020.

BLOODBLISTER – When racing in restricted room to the inside of DAD’S LAD approaching the 400m, the gelding laid in and made contact with the running rail and, as a result, became unbalanced and lost ground.

DREAM CANDY – Slow to begin. Raced greenly rounding the home turn and laid out.

RYANO – Slow to begin.

WALLY’S DREAM – Slow to begin.

Race 9: CALTEX TOOWOOMBA MAIDEN PLATE – 1210M

COMPLETE TRUST – Shifted out shortly after the start and hampered EDRADOUR. When in a rearward trailing position approaching the 900m, the gelding commenced to overrace and threw its head in the air.

PADDLEPOP – Slow to begin. Steadied to avoid the heels of the weakening EDRADOUR approaching the 500m.

TIGERPOWER – Bumped at the start by THE GOOD THE BAD. Laid out under pressure over the final 200m.

EDRADOUR – Hampered shortly after the start. After passing the 600m, the gelding commenced to weaken and was retired out of the race. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Trainer D. Groves was advised that prior to resuming racing, the gelding must perform satisfactorily in a trial. Trainer D. Groves advised Stewards that he would also have his veterinary surgeon examine the gelding, and provide a veterinary clearance to Stewards prior to racing again.

MOUNT PADRAO – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

BOOMTOWN BABE – Jockey N. Tomizawa was reminded of his obligations regarding the use of the whip prior to the 100m.

THE GOOD THE BAD – Bumped heavily at the start by OUR CLARISSA and lost ground.

MYKISS FROMA ROSE – Raced in restricted room for a short distance to the inside of TIGERPOWER passing the 1000m.

OUR CLARISSA – Began awkwardly and shifted in crowding runners to its inside.

Race 10: CHARLTON TYRE SERVICE MAIDEN PLATE – 1210M

MIGHTY ROCKY – Hung out after passing the 600m and proved difficult to ride over the concluding stages. On return to scale, jockey L. Cheshire reported that she was experiencing some soreness in her right arm. Trainer C. Byrne was advised that the gelding must trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to next racing.

CRIMINAL INTENT – Hung out after passing the 900m and proved difficult to ride. Trainer M. Fry was advised that the mare must trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to next racing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be exhibiting a poor post-race recovery.

MOTOWN MINX – As J. King was to be overweight, Stewards permitted N. Tomizawa to be substituted as rider. Jockey King was fined $100.

JUXTAPOSED – Inconvenienced by the wayward CRIMINAL INTENT when rounding the home turn.
