GENERAL

Stewards declared VIZSTAR (Race 3) a late scratching at 9.05am after trainer J. Sims advised the gelding had shifted its near fore plate and was found to be lame. J. Sims was advised that VIZSTAR would require a veterinary clearance before racing or trialling next.

As apprentice R. Thorburn was overweight on YAKATORI (race 6), he was replaced by apprentice C. Bellamy. R. Thorburn was fined $200 under the provisions of AR190(3).

RACE 1: VIEW HOTEL BRISBANE QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1100 M

DIAMOND GALLERY – Bumped at the start. Apprentice C. Sutherland reported that the gelding was not suited to racing forward and would be better over further distance.

FINAL CRUSADE – Jumped out at the start taking DIAMOND GALLERY out which bumped TESSA. When asked to comment on the performance, rider G. Cartwright stated that after beginning awkwardly she was required to pressure her mount to take up a forward position and raced on the rail which she felt was an inferior part of the track.

O'REILLYS FLIGHT – Began awkwardly.

TAP OUT – Slow to begin.

MAGRITTE – Near the 900m was steadied and made contact with the rail when FINAL CRUSADE shifted in when not fully clear. G. Cartwright the rider of FINAL CRUSADE was reprimanded for careless riding under AR131(a) in this incident. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

TESSA – Bumped at the start. Shifted in under pressure leaving the 200m requiring the rider to stop riding and straighten, continued to lay in under pressure in the home straight.

RACE 2: ELEGANT BLINDS TOOWOOMBA BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1200 M

TRAPEZE WARRIOR - Change of tactics; ride with cover in the back half of the field. Settled midfield. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Shifted out approaching the 400m and bumped GOLDEN LOOM and taking that runner wider on the track.

GOLDEN LOOM – Near the 400m bumped and taken wider on the track. Laid in under pressure over the final 100m.

HOOT 'N' HOLLER – Began very awkwardly and lost ground. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice K. Lenton stated that after beginning awkwardly the mare settled further back in the field than anticipated, adding that she made a wide run rounding the home turn and that her mount began to weaken and failed to finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer T. Pascoe could not offer any explanation for the performance, adding that he will conduct blood tests during the week and report back to Stewards the results.

BROOKLYN DAISY – Fractious in the enclosure and reluctant to proceed to the start. Trainer B. Healey was advised that a warning would be placed on the mare’s pre-race manners. Began very awkwardly and lost ground. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice R. Thorburn stated that his instructions were to be midfield, however the mare was particularly stirred up today and after beginning awkwardly, threw its head in the air and as a result settled back further in the field than anticipated. He added that he placed his mount under pressure from the 700m however it failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing.

SWITCHBLADE – Raced wide without cover.

HELL OF A LAD – Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

ALL BLACK – Disappointed for a run momentarily upon entering the home straight.

MYSTERY POWER – When questioned regarding leading, which was in contrast to its most recent start, rider D. Boche stated that from the wide barrier his instructions were to ride forward and sit outside the leader. He added that when he was caught wide in the early stages, he applied more pressure to his mount and was able to clear the field and obtain a leading position on the rail. Trainer S. Croxford confirmed the instructions to ride forward but would have preferred the horse obtain a position a pair back from the leaders, adding that these were similar instructions issued at the previous start, which after beginning only fairly from the widest barrier, the rider was obliged to race back in the field with cover. Stewards reminded trainer S. Croxford of her obligations under AR100(1)(a) to notify stewards in future of any instructions where a horse is to be ridden in a manner different to how the horse was ridden at its most recent start/s.

RACE 3: CONGRATULATIONS JACK & SHARNA CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1300 M

Upon pulling up, M. Savva the rider of THINK ROMANCE, dismounted when she felt the mare had gone amiss in the near foreleg. As M. Savva was unable to return to scale in an appropriate time frame due to lending assistance with the oncourse veterinarian with THINK ROMANCE, Stewards under the provisions of AR208(3)(b), were of the opinion that M. Savva had carried her correct weight in the race and declared correct weight on the judge’s placing’s. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an injury to the near fore elbow, was lame and subsequently treated by the oncourse veterinarian. Trainer K. Kemp was advised that the mare would require a veterinary clearance before racing or trialling again.

ZEAMAIZE – Raced three wide without cover. When asked to comment on the performance, apprentice C. Bellamy stated she pressured her mount to go forward from the wide barrier, however was forced to race wide and with the gelding being first up from a spell today, felt this had an effect on the performance. THE LUCKY ALIEN was transported for a post-mortem examination and biological samples were taken for analysis. Apprentice S. Bailey was attended to by QAS officers and was subsequently cleared of any injury. Stewards adjourned an inquiry into apprentice S. Bailey being dislodged to a time and date to be fixed.

Apprentice S. Bailey, whilst cleared of injury from her fall in the previous race, made submission and was granted leave by Stewards from her remaining ride in this race. Stewards permitted apprentice C. Bellamy as the replacement rider for YAKITORI.

The start of this race was delayed approximately eight minutes owing to the previous race and the veterinary attention and transport of THE LUCKY ALIEN from the track.

Correct weight was delayed to allow Stewards and the connections of LOST IN FRANCE an opportunity to view the official race footage to establish if the filly had been afforded a fair start. After viewing the films, Stewards established that as the start was effected, LOST IN FRANCE reared up in the barriers dislodging the rider and then galloping riderless a significant distance behind the field. Stewards determined that LOST IN FRANCE was afforded a fair start and declared correct weight on the judge’s placings. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have a fracture of the nasal bone and bilateral bleeding as a result of external trauma, subsequently treated by the oncourse veterinarian. Trainer M. Nolan was advised that the filly would require a veterinary clearance before officially trialling to the satisfaction of Stewards before racing again.
