GENERAL
 
Trainer V. Heading was fined the sum of $100 for the late declaration of apprentice O. Kendal on GOOD PHILLY in Race 3. LR67(1).
 
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by trainer W. O’Connell for the replacement of his rider in Race 7.

RACE 1 NATIONAL JOCKEY CELEBRATION DAY BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP      1300 M        

FOUR ACE – Slow to begin. Shortly after the start restrained and settled at the rear of the field. Passing the 200m shifted out and bumped FORT WILLIAM to obtain clear running.
 
NORTH OF ELI – Performed below market expectations. Apprentice C. Lowe reported that she was instructed to settle in a handy position. She added that during the early stages of the event she felt she was going to be able to obtain a handy position with cover before the tempo of the race eased and as a result the gelding then commenced to race keenly, and she was unable to shift in. She further added that NORTH OF ELI then raced wide without cover throughout the event and she felt this was detrimental to the overall performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed NORTH OF ELI suffering from the thumps.
 
FORT WILLIAM – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Laid out rounding the home turn and brushed with UPSTART LOVER. Passing the 200m was bumped and carried wider by FOUR ACE, which had shifted out to obtain clear running. Apprentice S. Callow was spoken to advisedly in relation to her arm getting above shoulder height whilst using her whip.

RUMBLING AWAY - Shortly after the start was crowded for room between FORT WILLIAM and LINWAR which had shifted out marginally. Raced keenly in the early stages.
 
LINWAR – Raced keenly in the early stages, approaching the 800m commenced to over raced getting its head up on a number of occasions whilst being restrained. Laid out under pressure in the straight.
 
UPSTART LOVER – Began awkwardly and as a result was slow into stride. Near the 400m, shifted in and brushed with FORT WILLIAM, which was laying out. Inclined to lay out rounding the home turn.


RACE 2 HAPPY HORSES' BIRTHDAY CLASS 3 HANDICAP          1000 M        

WANTED HILLBILLY– Began awkwardly and shifted in. Shortly after the start was bumped by MA’S EPIC and then hampered and tightened for room between MA’S EPIC and SAPANA’S PEARL. Near the 600m was carried wider by MA’S EPIC, which had shifted out to improve. Betting drifter QOP $5.5-$10. Rider K. Zechner reported that he was instructed to settle in a handy position but was unable to do so as the gelding did not begin well. He added that in his opinion the gelding is very sensitive and failed to travel at different stages of the event, even with the genuine tempo. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
 
BREEZIN'– Began awkwardly and then bumped on the hindquarters by GOOSE STEP, which had been bumped and carried out and as a result became unbalanced. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 800m, when racing keenly, was eased when in restricted room to the inside of SNIZOND, which had rolled in marginally. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running at the entrance to the straight. Laid in under pressure in the straight.   
 
SNITZOND – Raced wide without cover for a majority of the event. Laid out rounding the home turn. Near the 300m was momentarily inconvenienced by BREEZIN’, which had shifted out. Wanted to lay in under pressure in the straight.  
 
MA'S EPIC – Slow to begin. Shortly after the start shifted out and bumped WANTED HILLBILLY.
 
SAPANA'S PEARL – Bumped by MISSY’S READY, which had begun awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
 
VESPER LYND – Began very awkwardly, shifting out and bumping GOOSE STEP, taking that mare outwards.
 
GOOSE STEP – Bumped at that start by VESPER LYND, which had begun very awkwardly. Shortly after the start, carried out and bumped BREEZIN’. Raced keenly in the lead.
 
MISSY'S READY – Began awkwardly shifted in and bumped SAPANA’S PEARL.


RACE 3 1EQUINE - FOR THE EQUINE ATHLETE BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP      1640 M

POWER PACK – Slow into stride then shortly after was hampered by GOOD PHILLY, which had shifted out. Raced wide without cover for a majority of the event. Near the 1200m permitted to stride forward before settling in a three wide position on pace approaching the 800m. Tactics quired. When questioned, apprentice S. Callow explained that she was instructed to settle in a handy position, but after being slow into stride settled further back than intended. When questioned in relation to her riding from the 1400m. S. Callow explained that bearing in mind the instructions issued, she felt her mount would be best suited being ridden along to be in a more handy position as it has raced well at previous starts being forward. After viewing the available patrol footage S. Callow agreed with Stewards that her best option, passing the 1400m, would have been to shift in to obtain a trailing position behind MADALSA, rather than using her mount and racing wide for the majority of the event. Stewards also pointed out that with the gelding stepping back down to the 1600m, it may not have shown the speed required to get to the front and she should be open to riding her mounts where reasonable rather than how she did on this occasion. Stable representative J. Kemp confirmed the nature of the instructions, which had been issued by her and the ownership pre-race. Apprentice S. Callow was severely reprimanded for having her arm above shoulder height when using her whip on a number of occasions. AR132(6)(b).

MADALSA – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 1200m, when racing keenly shifted out abruptly. Held up for a short distance rounding the home turn.
 
GOOD PHILLY – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Passing the 600m was briefly held up before shifting out over the heels of WHATA SORT.
 
WHATA SORT – Slow to begin (2L)
 
THE COPS– Fractious in the barriers. Trainer D. Bell was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding for being fractious. Raced keenly in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Rider A. Keeley reported that the gelding was under pressure from the 600m and hit a flat spot, which the gelding can do in his races. He added that even though the gelding was under full riding, THE COPS took some time to really respond and he was disappointed in the overall performance. Trainer D. Bell was at a loss to explain the performance and also commented on the prolonged time the gelding took to respond to A. Keely’s riding. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards asked D. Bell to contact them with how THE COPS pulls up on return to the stable.
 
CAITLIN – Began awkwardly.
 
JORUM – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.


RACE 4 HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY BRAITH BENCHMARK 75 HANDICAP   1110 M        

INVAHIR– Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped UNDER THE LIMIT. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
 
JACK BE LUCKY– Began awkwardly.  
 
RALPHIE – Laid out throughout.
 
ENTERPRISE LUCIA – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide without cover for a majority of the event. Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
PANTELONE – Began awkwardly. Rounding the home turn raced in restricted room and was eased when tight to the inside of ENTERPRISE LUCIA.
 
UNDER THE LIMIT – Passing the 200m was steadied when close to the heels of RALPHINE (K. Zechner) which had shifted out when not clear. K. Zechner was reprimanded AR131(a).


RACE 5 SUBZERO AIRCONDITIONING MAIDEN PLATE          1000 M        

I WASONLY NINETEEN – Slow to begin. Raced wide without cover for a majority of the event. Passing the 300m, was bumped on the hindquarters by THAT’S A BEAUTY, which when laying out, shifted out becoming very unbalanced. Rider G. Geran reported that his mount will derive benefit from further racing.
 
VICTORY LINK– Slow to begin and then hampered when tightened for room between OLD WEMATONG and ESAYPETA.
 
AKKU – Near the 750m was steadied when close to the heels of MISHPAT, which had been checked. As a result shifted out and carried ESAYPETA wider.
 
OLD WERMATOG – Bumped at the start by ENTERPRISE ALOISIA. Shortly after the start was bumped by ENTERPRISE ALOISIA on a number of occasions who was being buffeted between runners. 
 
ENTERPRISE ALOISIA– Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped OLD WERMATONG. Shortly after shifted out marginally making contact with OLD WERMATONG, shifting in and made contact with the hindquarters of MONAROMA, turning that mare out. Then buffered between both runners for a short distance becoming very unbalanced and ultimately restraining. Approaching the 300m was steadied when close to the heels of OLD WERMATONG, which had shifted in when not fully clear (N. Fazackerley). N. Fazackerly was severely reprimanded AR131(a).
 
ESAYPETA– Hampered near the 750m by AKKU which had shifted out. As a result raced wide without cover from this point. A post-race veterinary examination found the presence of blood at both nostrils. Trainer K. Kemp was notified that in accordance with AR79(4), ESAYPEATA shall not without permission of the Stewards: (a) be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse, recognised training track, private training establishment, or other place for a period of two months; (b) start in any race for a period of 3 months, and then only after:  (i) a gallop of at least 1000 metres; or (ii) an official trial or jump-out; in the presence, and to the satisfaction of a Steward.
 
KVAS – Raced keenly in the lead. Near the 750m was bumped on the hindquarters by MISHPAT which was racing in restricted room before being checked.
 
MISHPAT– Approaching the 800m raced in restricted room to the inside of MONAROMA, near the 750m was checked and taken in by MONAROMA, making contact with KVAS whereby he was checked and lost its rightful running (S. Champkin). Rider L. Tilley reported that after suffering interference in the early stages of the event his mount travelled only fairly and on entrance to the straight he became concerned with his mounts action and elected to ease his mount down. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the stable.
 
MONAROMA– Shortly after the start was bumped on the hindquarters by ENTERPRISE ALOISIA becoming unbalanced. Was then contacted by that mare on a number of occasions as it was being buffeted between runners. Shifted in near the 750m. Apprentice S. Champkin was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(b) for failing to rider her mount to the finish. In not taking the matter any further Stewards considered that in their opinion her actions did not affect the placings, that S Champkin has only just returned to riding after a considerable lay off due to injury and her remorse after viewing the available footage.
 
THAT'S A BEAUTY – Began awkwardly. Laid out under pressure rounding the home turn. Passing the 300m, when laying out made heavy contact with I WASONLY NINETEEN. Stewards questioned K. Lenton in relation to the reasons she became so unbalanced rounding the home turn. K. Lenton explained that approaching the turn she was racing neat between I WASONLY NINETEEN and VICTORY LINK and with her mount inclined to lay out, she made contact with the hindquarters of I WASONLY NINETEEN, despite her efforts, unbalancing both her and G. Geran. Due to the available footage and K Lenton’s evidence, it was deemed a racing incident. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
 
Apprentice S. Champkin pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR131(a), in that approaching the 750m made insufficient effort to prevent her mount from shifting in, whilst having MISHPAT tight to her inside and then having to check when in insufficient room between MONAROMA and KVAS. S Champkin had her license to ride in races suspended for a period of 10 days. To commence midnight 6 of August (at the completion of a suspension incurred at Grafton on July 24) and conclude midnight the 16August, eligible to resume on August 17. In assessing penalty Stewards considered her guilty plea, record and the QRIC Careless Riding Template. S. Champkin was advised of her rights of appeal.


RACE 6 EMPIRE OF JAPAN QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE      1050 M        

POWER HIT– Passing the 400m was brushed by BURUM BEAU, which had shifted out where there was doubtful running. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Rider N. Tomizawa pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR132(7)(ii) that he used his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m (1 more than permitted) and 17 times in total and was fined $500.
 
SHOES AND SOCKS – Eased down in the straight. Performed below market expectation. Rider L. Tilley reported that on rounding the home turn his mount was making a respiratory noise and then began to lose its action and as a result he eased down. He further reported in his opinion SHOES AND SOCKS may have choked down. A stable representative reported that SHOES AND SOCKS returned to the mounting yard with its tongue over the bit. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
 
TISANI JAMES – Slow to begin. Inclined to lay in throughout. Near the 900m shifted in and away from PIER ANGEL and was eased.
 
TOO MANY CHIEFS– Slow to begin (2L).
 
BURUM BEAU– Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Held up for clear running approaching the 400m until attempting to shift out where there was insufficient room to do so, making contact with POWER HIT and then being awkwardly placed on the heels of DISCO DIAMOND, before obtaining clear running shortly after. After viewing the available patrol films, apprentice K. Lenton agreed with Stewards that at a position passing the 400m there was doubtful room for her to attempt to establish herself and so was reminded of her obligations to make sure there is sufficient room before shifting ground. Apprentice K. Lenton reported that her mount wanted to over race throughout and proved difficult to ride in her usual manner in the straight as it wanted to lay in.
 
DISCO DIAMOND– Rider H. Richardson reported that her mount wanted to lay out throughout and raced greenly.
 
ON THE CUSP– Began awkwardly and as a result was slow into stride.
 
PIER ANGEL– Began awkwardly. Near the 900m shifted in and away from SAY CAVALLINO.
 
SAY CAVALLINO– Restrained in the early stages in an attempt to find cover.
 
DIAMOND DRUNK – A warning was placed on the filly for its poor performance.


RACE 7 BOTTLEMART MAIDEN HANDICAP   2175 M

SO YOU RECKON – Began awkwardly. Laid out rounding the home turn.

ACTS ALONE– Over raced in the early and middle stages. Performed below market expectations. Rider H. Shaw reported that the gelding failed to settle at any stage through the event and this was detrimental to its overall performance. A post-race examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
 
JOSEPHINE OF TUFFY– Began awkwardly. Allowed to stride forward in the early stages until obtaining the lead.
 
WAVES OF EMOCEAN (NZ) – Began awkwardly.
 
FLIRTING WITH FIRE (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Race wide without cover through the middle stages. Over the concluding stages, when weakening, raced in restricted room between MOANA NUI and YELARBON LAD, both of which shifted ground. As a result was unable to be ridden out to the finish.
 
SPRING RAIN– Shortly after the start was hampered between VEGA SICILIA and SO YOU RECKON, which had shifted in marginally.
 
VEGA SICILIA– Approaching the 1200m shifted out and strode forward as a result raced wide without cover from this point.
 
YES IS THE ANSWER– Raced keenly in the early and middle stages.
 
OLE ALI – Change of tactics. Connections advised that the intention was to settle further forward, which was the previous intent at recent starts. Settled better than midfield. Raced wide without cover through the early stages before approaching the 1500m being permitted to stride forward to settle in a better than midfield position near the 1200m. Commenced to weaken from the 600m and was eased down from the 500m. Apprentice S. Callow reported that as she placed her mount under pressure approaching the 600m it failed to quicken as expected and approaching the 500m put in an awkward stride and so she elected to ease her mount down from this point. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Stewards will follow up with the stable before deciding if any further action is required.
