Rider J. Molloy was spoken to advisedly after forgoing his engagement in Race 1 when accepting further rides at Tara on raceday, which had prevented him from being able to fulfil his commitment in Toowoomba.

Trainer B. Mackie who was acting as a Clerk of the Course on behalf of Toowoomba Turf Club, pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR113, the particulars being that whilst milling behind the barriers prior to the commencement of Race 6. Ms. Mackie was observed using her mobile phone whilst mounted. B. Mackie was fined $400.

Race 1 - BROWN FAMILY WINE GROUP BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP (1010 METRES)

THUNDERING SOUL – Trainer P. Webster advised Stewards he would instruct his rider to use her whip only sparingly. Laid in under pressure in the straight.

ELECTED (IRE) – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Approaching the 800m when racing keenly, was eased when close to the heels of COMMAND APPROVED (J. Lloyd), which had shifted in when not quite clear. J. Lloyd was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground. Approaching the 400m when placed under pressure commenced to lay in.

JEMELDI – Slow to begin. Raced keenly in the middle stages.

MINIMAL – Slow to begin. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.

COMMAND APPROVED – Began awkwardly. Near the 500m was bushed and carried wider by THUNDERING SOUL, which had shifted out to improve. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Rider J. Lloyd was severely reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(b) for failing to ride out his mount to the finish. In assessing penalty Stewards were of the opinion his actions did not have bearing on the overall finishing positions and that COMMAND APPROVED was laying in.

PRUCIA – Slow to begin. Apprentice K. Lenton reported that due to the rail position she was of the opinion that it will be difficult to make ground and put this as the reason for the seemingly disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Co – trainer T. Sweeney advised the intention was to send the mare for a spell.

Race 2 - EMPIRE OF JAPAN STANDING AT HOPETOUN FARM QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN HANDICAP (1010 METRES)

COUP DE CASH – Over raced in the early and middle stages of the event, getting its head up on a number of occasions. Raced greenly throughout. Passing the 600m, whilst over racing, shifted out and bumped WAXED. Approaching the 400m improved up onto the heels of DISCO DIAMOND and was steadied. Leaving the 400m, shifted out and bumped WAXED. QOP $8.5 - $5.5. Rider M. Savva reported that her mount was keen and very green and will take benefit from further racing.

KISSING PRIDE- Slow to begin and then shifted in abruptly. Raced greenly under pressure in the straight. Rider G. Geran reported that his mount was relucted to hold a position inside other runners and raced very green throughout the event.

WAXED – Slow to begin. Bumped and hampered by COUP DE CASH which was over racing passing the 600m. Bumped and carried wider near the 400m by COUP DE CASH. Raced greenly under pressure in the straight.

READY AS BAM – Rider H. Richardson reported that she had to use some use of her mount from the wide barrier to obtain the lead, which may have been detrimental to the finish of the gelding.

MARBELIZED – Raced greenly throughout. When questioned in relation to the tactics adopted and the overall performance of the filly apprentice S. Callow explained that she was given no firm instructions from the stable. She added that after beginning only fairly she looked to find a position toward the rear of the field before her mount dropped the bit and despite her urgings failed to travel from near the 900m for the remainder of the event. She further added that the filly wanted to lay out rounding the home turn and would benefit in competing in races over further. Stable representative J. Kemp confirmed there were no firm instructions and that the intention was to race the filly over distance.

DISCO DIAMOND – Well supported throughout betting $31-$5.5 performing below market expectations. Rider L. Tilley reported that filly travelled well in the early and middle stages but was only fair when placed under pressure from the 400m. He added that the filly wanted to roll around under pressure in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have a slower than normal recovery.

Race 3 - ELEGANT BLINDS COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1210 METRES)

After being fractious in the barriers SIR SNACKALOT underwent a veterinary examination and was subsequently scratched on veterinary advice at 7.01pm. Trainer B. Puckeridge was advised that SIR SNACKALOT will be required to obtain a further barrier certificate due to being fractious. Stewards ordered the following deductions to be applied to the face value of all successful bets.

IN THREE DEE w 7c, p 7c
EINSTAG p 11c
RUTHVEN RUSH p 10 c

GODTFRED KIRK – Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 500m was steadied off heels when racing keenly. Held up for clear running from approaching the 400m until passing the 300m. Unplaced $2.10 favourite. Rider G. Geran reported that in his opinion the gelding would be suited up to 1400m and having an unimpeded run to allow the gelding to build into the race as he does not possess a sharp turn of foot. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding suffering from the thumps.

RUTHVEN RUSH – Began very awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages.

TEELG – Fractious in the barriers. Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages.

DRACARIAN – Near the 300m had to be steadied and was hampered by GODTFRED KIRK (G. Geran), which had shifted out when insufficiently clear. G. Geran was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a).

IN THREE DEE – Began awkwardly. Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.

LIFE OF TREE – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the event.

EINSTAG – Slow to begin. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Rider K. Zechner reported after being slow to begin he settled further back than intended, although he was instructed to find cover on the gelding. Improved performance. Trainer M. Nolan reported that he was pleased with the gelding’s performance, confirming his instruction was to find cover if possible. He added in his opinion having EINSTAG return to his home track and back to 1200m led to the improved performance. Stewards noted his comments.

THE BOSS MAN – Laid out rounding the home turn.

Race 4 - TAB ONE POOL FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1210 METRES)

DAIANE – Passing the 900m bumped on the hindquarters by ALIZA, being turned in and becoming unbalanced. Shifted out under pressure of the concluding stages.

SHAHAR – Began awkwardly. Eased passing the 900m when close to the heels of MINXY (L. Tilley), which had shifted in. L. Tilley was reprimanded under the provisions of AR131(a).

HAWAIIAN BLOOM – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 400m. Briefly held up approaching the 200m. Stewards questioned apprentice M.Mankelow in the presence of senior rider L. Tilley in relation to her tactics and riding, in particular her riding in the straight. When questioned, M. Mankelow explained that her mount had hung out badly at its last start as well as taking charge of a senior rider previously at Toowoomba, as a result she was instructed to find some cover, if possible, on the mare. She added that shortly after the start she restrained her mount to comply with instructions where the mare raced keenly in the race. When questioned in relation to her decision to attempt to shift out passing the 200m to the outside of SHAHAR rather than attempting to ride forward into a gap which had appeared between MINXY and SHAHAR. M. Mankelow explained that both runners where shifting ground under pressure and approaching the 200m there was insufficient room to attempt a run between these runners and as a result she elected to restrain and attempt to shift out to a gap which was developing in her opinion between HOLD MY HAND and the outside of SHAHAR. She added that she felt her mount was not travelling well enough to establish that position, so approaching the 100m shifted back into the run that had developed as MINXY commenced to weaken. After having the benefit of reviewing all the available footage M. Mankelow agreed with Stewards that she would have been better suited to maintain her position passing the 200m and ride forward rather than searching for other runs. Although M. Mankelow had erred in her decision at this stage of the race, Stewards were of the opinion this was an error in judgment and not culpable under the rules. Stewards did advise M. Mankelow that she must ride in a manner that does not leave room for question and noted her relative inexperience as a rider at the provincial level as well as riding under lights. Under the provision of AR144(2) Stewards directed M. Mankelow to seek further mentoring from Racing Queensland apprentice skill panel in relation to her ride.

ALIZA – Began awkwardly. Shifted out and bumped with DAIANE. Rider P. Randal reported that after suffering interference his mount was obliged to come back off the speed and did not perform her best because of this.

HOLD MY HAND – Raced keenly in the early stages.

SWEET POPPY – Slow to begin and then hampered shortly after the start. Rider D. Boutet reported his intention was to settle further forward stepping up in distance but after being hampered, settled further back.

WORLDY SPIRIT – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Shortly after the start was restrained to find cover. Laid in under pressure from the 400m. Near the 350m was eased when close to the heels of HOLD MY HAND (K. Zechner) which had shifted out marginally. K. Zechner was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

MINXY – Raced keenly in the early stages.

Apprentice M. Apel in the presence of senior rider A. Butler pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a). The particulars being that approaching the 900m she placed ALIZA in restricted room before passing the 900m making insufficient effort to prevent her mount from shifting in causing ALIZA to check and make contact with the inside running rail and DAIANE’s hindquarters. M. Apel’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period of 8 days to commence midnight 10 October and conclude midnight 18 October, eligible to resume 19 October. In assessing penalty Stewards considered her guilty plea, record and the QRIC Careless riding template.

Race 5 - VALE VINCE NUGENT MAIDEN HANDICAP (1300 METRES)

The running of this race was delayed by approximately 3 minutes due to rider J. Lloyd being dislodged from BELLOUISE after the mare had shifted abruptly unbalancing J. Lloyd on arrival to the barriers. The mare then galloped riderless for some distance before being recaptured. BELLOUISE was subsequently scratched on Stewards Orders at 8.09pm due to the amount of work BELLOUSIE had done and in the opinion of Stewards this being detrimental to its chance to perform at its best. Stewards ordered the following deductions to be applied to the face value of all successful bets.

TURF GAZETTE: 0c w, 1c p
STAR OF ASCOT: 1c p
CHEEKOSWAY: 3c p

Although J. Lloyd was harmlessly dislodged. He underwent assessment by QAS and passed fit to fulfil his remaining engagements. Further, due to the nature in which BELLOUISE became riderless Stewards took no formal action against the mare.

STAR OF ASCOT – Began awkwardly shifted in and was bumped by PIETARI.

CHEEKOSWAY – Slow to begin. Laid in throughout the event. Unable to be fully tested over the concluding stages. Apprentice S. Callow reported that her mount wanted to lay in under pressure in the straight and although she wanted to shift out over the concluding stages to continue into clear running, there was doubtful room and with her mounts racing manners it took some time to get the gelding to shift ground.

MAHOGANY BELLE (NZ) – Underwent pre-race veterinary exam due to being a 7yo first starter. Began awkwardly and was slow into stride.

TURF GAZETTE - Began awkwardly. Approaching the 1000m was awkwardly placed to the inside of STAR OF ASCOT (B. El’lssa), which had shifted in. B. El’lssa was reprimanded for shifting ground when insufficiently clear. AR131(a).

PIETARI – Shifted out at the start and bumped STAR OF ASCOT. It became evident as the gelding entered the straight that the bandage on the near foreleg had become loose. Stewards alerted the Clerks of Course which assisted rider N. Tomizawa. As a result, the Clerks returned the gelding to the mounting yard and N. Tomizawa returned with the Starter. Stewards inquired into the incident and questioned rider N. Tomizawa along with confirming with the attending outside Steward, in charge of checking gear, that the bandages were applied correctly as per the National Gear Register. After taking evidence, it was established that although the vetrap around the fetlock had been tapped correctly a cotton standard bandage underneath had not been stitched. Trainer W. King was reprimanded under the provisions of AR106 In that he failed to stitch his fetlock bandage appropriately and as required under the rules. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

FOXY ARTIST - Began awkwardly. Near the 400m was carried out slightly.

Race 6 - JOE WAGNER GROUP BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP (1640 METRES)

The start of this race was delayed approximately 3 minutes due to the delay in the previous race.

MALECON – Raced keenly through the middle stages. Near the 1300m improved up close to the heels of MARAVICH (IRE) and was steadied.

PICKO ROCKS – Stood flat footed (3L). Trainer G. Wright was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding. Rider R. O’Sullivan reported that the gelding can be slow away and competing first up over 1600m was beaten for early speed. He added that his mount picked up the bit and found the line well and would appreciate racing over 2000m or further at its next race start.

BOLE LE – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the lead. Rider L. Tilley reported that in his opinion the gelding would race best with cover.

SO YOU CAN TORQUE – Slow to begin. Had some difficulty obtaining clear running approaching and passing the 400m. Rider G. Geran reported that after being slow to begin, he settled further back than intended on the gelding.

CAUSEWAYS – Near the 1500m had to be steadied when to the inside of PRINCE CARLOS (D.Boutet) which had shifted in. D. Boutet was severely reprimanded for shifted ground when insufficiently clear. Wanted to lay out rounding the turn near the 1400m.

FLIRTING WITH FIRE (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide without cover from the 1200m.

JOSEPHINE OF TUFFY – Raced keenly in the lead.

ROSE OF CHANTILLY – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early stages. Raced wide without cover in the early stages. Approaching the 1700m permitted to stride forward until settling outside the lead near the 1300m. Eased down from the 200m. Stewards spoke with apprentice S. Callow for the reason she had stopped riding passing the 200m. S. Callow explained that after doing some work to get to the lead her mount raced keenly and when she placed it under pressure near the 400m, the mare began to weaken and near the 200m she felt something may have been amiss and elected to ease her mount down. Although she had spoken to Stewards on scale, she had failed to elaborate on her concerns for the welfare of ROSE OF CHANTILLY. As a result, Stewards reminded S. Callow of her obligations to advise Stewards of anything that may have affected her mount from finishing to the best of its ability. Stewards attempted to have the mare vetted, but it had left the course. Stewards will follow up with the stable over the coming days.

SILVERTAIL – A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. Rider N. Tomizawa reported that his mount will derive fitness benefit from today’s run. He was reminded of his obligations to ride his mounts out to the finish where possible.
