“I was watching a few of the 510 metre races last week. A few of them went off at the corner, but they’re probably dogs who haven’t been up there,” he said.
“I thought ‘I’d like to be either the one, two or eight’. And, I drew eight, so I was happy with that draw.”
Breakout Lad is by Melbourne Cup champion Aston Dee Bee and out of Rasheda, who registered 15 wins from 54 starts.
Crick said Breakout Lad had a fine temperament to match his strong athletic frame.
“She (Rasheda) was a top-class bitch. He’s very well-bred. I just know he had a few problems earlier on in his career,” he said.
“He’s a litter brother to the record breaker (29.03 seconds over 520 metres) at Wentworth Park, Dalwhinnie. He’s got a motor.”
As well as providing Crick with some confidence going into Wednesday night’s Rockhampton Cup heat, Breakout Lad gave the veteran conditioner a special personal milestone with his last-start victory.
