Queensland Apprentice Jockey Program launches inaugural 2026 intake

14 May 2026

Racing Queensland has today launched its intake for the 2026 Queensland Apprentice Jockey Program – a landmark initiative designed to identify, support, and develop the next generation of jockeys across the state.

Expressions of Interest for the inaugural intake are now open, with successful applicants to be announced ahead of the program’s commencement at RQ’s formal induction ceremony on August 5.

Participants will undertake a comprehensive selection process, including fitness and medical screening, riding assessments, and completion of foundational industry qualifications, ensuring that all successful candidates are fully equipped to thrive in the demanding environment of race riding.

“Racing Queensland is committed to giving every apprentice the best possible opportunity to succeed, both during their apprenticeship and throughout their broader careers in racing,” RQ Acting CEO Lachlan Murray said.

“The inaugural intake marks an exciting new chapter for the industry, as RQ recommits to leading with integrity, high performance, and dedication.

“This initiative strengthens the talent pipeline while re-establishing Queensland’s reputation as a leader in racing education and development.”

The 2026 QAJP intake follows the recent announcement of RQ’s new state-of-the-art racing education and high-performance training centre at the Gold Coast Turf Club.

‘The Racing Institute’ will soon create a distinct identity for industry education, nationally recognised qualifications, non-accredited training initiatives and high-performance development.

It will also serve as the new home of the QAJP, delivering structured education, mentoring and elite coaching to develop Queensland’s next generation of champion jockeys.

The program offers personalised coaching and mentoring delivered by professional jockey coaches and mentors, as well as support with physical conditioning, nutrition, and mental wellbeing.

“The QAJP represents a significant investment in the future of the Queensland racing industry, offering participants access to world-class training facilities, mentoring, and education,” Education and Workforce Development Manager Briony Moore said.

“The program is designed to not only build technical riding skills, but also develop the professionalism, resilience, and knowledge required to succeed at the elite level of the sport.

“The development of The Racing Institute forms a key pillar of RQ’s Industry Workforce Strategy, focused on attracting, developing, retaining, and sustaining the future racing workforce across all three codes.”
