Stewards approved the following overweight:
Race 6: B. Thornton +0.5kg (56.5kg)
Trainer R. Heathcote was reprimanded pursuant to LR 36(6) for failing to scratch CAXTON LASS by the prescribed time which was a dual acceptor in races 7 and 8.
RACE 1:SOUTHS SPORTS CLUB FILLIES AND MARES MAIDEN PLATE 1200 M
SHAMIELA – Bumped at the start. Trailed the field throughout. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Following today’s disappointing performance, Trainer W. Kuskopf was advised that SHAMIELA’s nominations for future metropolitan races would be refuseduntil such time the mares form improves to the requisite standards.
ARCTIC BRIGHT (NZ) – Shifted out on jumping away and bumped FLYING POPPI.
BOTTLES OF SHELLS – Jockey R. Maloney reported at scale that BOTTLES OF SHELLS travelled keenly in the early and middle stages and was disappointing when placed under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
FLYING POPPI – Bumped at the start.
HAD IT ALL – Shifted out on jumping away and bumped SHAMIELA.
LIGHTS WILL GUIDE - Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
RACE 2:BECOME A BRC MEMBER COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES MAIDEN PLATE 1200 M
ICONIFY – Slow to begin, then had to be restrained to avoid the heels of MAGNA ERUPTION, which shifted in abruptly and as a result ICONIFY lost ground.
BOWLING HARRY – Began awkwardly.
DISPARATE – Raced keenly in the middle stages.
MAGNA ERUPTION – Began awkwardly and shifted in abruptly on jumping away. Raced greenly in the early and middle stages.
PARADING GUS – Shifted in on jumping away.
ROUGH CAUSE - Began awkwardly.
TEDDY TOO CHEAP – Jockey R. Maloney was reminded of his obligations regarding riding his mounts out fully to the conclusion of the event.
RACE 3:SKY RACING QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD HANDICAP 1110 M
DUKE OF ALBEMARLE - Raced wide.
COOL GENT – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
HOLY TERROR – Blundered approaching the 200m. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey R. Stewart advised that the gelding travelled well until placed under pressure in the home straight where it became awkward in its action near the 200m. He further added that HOLY TERROR may not have appreciated today’s worn racing surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding had shifted its near fore plate and was attended to by the farrier.
NOZOMU – Raced wide.
TENGUN TOMMY- Raced wide.
TRUE INTENT – Held up from the 600m until leaving the 400m.
PINKISH HUE – Bumped with DANCING BY shortly after the start. Near the 900m, improved onto the heels of TREASURY LANE and had to be steadied. When racing greenly near the 600m, shifted out despite the efforts of its rider. Jockey M. Du Plessis reported that the filly may have gotten its tongue over the bit during the event, which in his opinion contributed to its wayward racing manners during the middle stages.
DANCING BY – Stewards permitted DANCING BY to race without a tongue tie after it was unable to be reapplied behind the barriers. Bumped with PINKISH HUE shortly after the start. Raced greenly during the early and middle stages. Near the 600m, when racing greenly, had to be steadied between DUKE OF ALBEMARLE and PINKISH HUE, which shifted out when racing greenly at the heels of TREASURY LANE.
RACE 4:LADBROKES STRADBROKE CALCUTTA BOOK NOW FILLIES AND MARES BM70 HANDICAP 1350 M
VOODOO LASS – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Apprentice C. Baker reported at scale that VOODOO LASS raced keenly early which may have been detrimental to its finishing efforts. She further added that in her opinion the filly may not have appreciated today’s worn racing surface. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
DAMEHOOD (NZ) – Bumped with TRAPEDO at the start. Inconvenienced rounding the home turn by HELLARIOUS, which laid out. Laid in under pressure approaching the winning post.
TRAPEDO – Bumped with DAMEHOOD (NZ) at the start.
ECHO HUNTER – Hampered on jumping away.
HELLARIOUS – Laid out rounding the home turn.
KAFFIR LILY - Bumped ECHO HUNTER on jumping away. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey J. Bayliss reported that the mare failed to travel comfortably at any stage of the event. A post-race veterinary examination revealed clinical signs of the thumps.
KELANOA – When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice E. Lang reported that in her opinion, the mare had come to the end of its preparation. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery. Trainer M. Lakey advised Stewards that it was his intention to send KELANOA for a freshen up.
RACE 5:XXXX GOLD COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES BM70 HANDICAP 1350 M
LIBERTY STEPS - Slow to begin. Near the 200m, became momentarily awkward in its action when being directed back towards the rail in order to secure clear running. Apprentice R. Thorburn advised that LIBERTY STEPS failed to travel comfortably for the majority of the event.
BLUEPINOT – Near the 300m bumped with SAINT ALDWYN when attempting to secure clear running to the inside of HOLY FLASH. Shifted out under pressure approaching the 100m, before being corrected by its rider. Lost its off-hind plate.
SAINT ALDWYN – Held up rounding the home turn. Approaching the 300m was disappointed for a run between SAVAII and HOLY FLASH and bumped with BLUEPINOT which was also attempting to secure the same run. Held up until leaving the 200m.
SAVAII – When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey B. Thompson reported that SAVAII travelled well until the 600m however, became under pressure quickly from that point of the event and was disappointing in its finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
SMART ACTION – Raced wide.
GIAPPONESE – Began awkwardly.
HOLY FLASH – Bumped RAFFISH at the start. Inconvenienced and carried wider approaching the 100m by BLUEPINOT.
RAFFISH – Bumped HOLY FLASH at the start. Raced wide. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Following today’s disappointing performance, Trainer W. Kuskopf was advised that RAFFISH’s nominations for future metropolitan races would be refused until such time the gelding’s form improves to the requisite standards.
RACE 6:DRINKWISE CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1640 M
BLAZING HARRY – Apprentice B. Youngberry reported at scale that BLAZING HARRY travelled well, however did not finish the race off as expected and in her opinion may appreciate a step back in distance. Trainer B. Healy agreed with Apprentice Youngberry’s comment and would give consideration to stepping the gelding back in distance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.
EASY LOVE – Shifted out under pressure approaching the 200m.
WOWZINO (NZ) – Raced wide.
HE'SGOTTHESAY – Began awkwardly.
DON STEFANO (NZ) - Slow to begin and then hampered shortly after the start between WOWZINO (NZ) and HE’SGOTTHESAY, which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
RUBYDOO – Near the 150m was obliged to alter course in order to improve.
KRUMAC – Approaching the 150m, momentarily steadied when WOWZINO (NZ) shifted in before being corrected by its rider.
DAMIANI – Eased down from the 400m. Jockey T. Marshall reported at scale that he became concerned with the action of the mare when placed under pressure from the 800m, and as a result elected to ease DAMIANI out of the event from the 400m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer G. Ryan was advised that DAMIANI would be required to officially trial prior to racing again.
RACE 7:RACING WORLD 50TH ANNIVERSARY CUP CLASS 4 PLATE 1200 M
FIRST MISSION – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped YENDY. Blundered approaching the 400m. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor reported that after blundering near the 400m, the gelding failed to travel comfortably for the remainder of the event and was disappointing in its finishing efforts. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer K. Schweida advised Stewards that FIRST MISSION would now be sent for a spell.
SCOUNDREL – Shifted in shortly after the start.
SYNERGY IN MOTION – Began awkwardly.
BREAK FREE – Approaching the 200m, had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of SCHEHERAZADE, which laid out.
SCHEHERAZADE – Improved onto the heels of KEEP SAFEnear the 600m and had to be steadied. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
YENDY – Bumped on jumping away. Jockey M. Rodd reported at scale that YENDY was inclined to over-race in the middle stages.
DAVIKAR – Hampered shortly after the start.
KEEP SAFE – Shifted in on jumping away. Raced wide until the 600m.
RACE 8:LADBROKES POPULAR SRM BM65 HANDICAP 1110 M
ENTERPRISE LUCIA – Began awkwardly. Raced wide with cover.
THANKYOU HENRY – Leaving the 200m, whilst weakening had to be steadied between STATEMENT OF TRUTH, which shifted out under pressure and PETITE PALACE, which shifted in and away from EXCENIA. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted today, Apprentice C. Baker explained that her instructions were to position the gelding towards the lead and ideally not take up a position on the rail, as connections were of the opinion that ground was inferior. Apprentice C. Baker stated that in the early part of the event she rode to comply with these instructions and when ESPRIT DU JOUR improved to her outside she elected to maintain her position one off the fence outside of BAD FOREST. After reviewing the films Apprentice C. Baker agreed with Stewards that her better option would have been to steady her mount and take a trail on ESPRIT DU JOUR. Given the instructions issued and her level of experience as an apprentice, Stewards took the matter no further other than to advise Apprentice C. Baker to be more adaptable on her rides in future. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
PETITE PALACE - Began awkwardly and shifted out. Held up rounding the home turn. Near the 300m, shifted out and bumped EXCENIA.
TORNADO EXPRESS – Began awkwardly and bumped FINANCIALLY FAMOUS. Improved onto heels near the 200m. Leaving the 100m, became awkwardly placed at the heels of STATEMENT OF TRUTH and was unable to be fully tested for the remainder of the event.
STATEMENT OF TRUTH - Began awkwardly. Shifted out under pressure leaving the 200m. When asked to comment on performance, Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester reported that STATEMENT OF TRUTH tired over the last 100m which he attributed to having to make use of the gelding to take up a forward position in the early stages of the event.
CAXTON LASS – Fractious in the barriers prior to the start being effected. Began awkwardly, was hampered and lost ground. Jockey A. Butler reported at scale that it was his intention to settle further forward, however, after beginning awkwardly, he was obliged to settle at the rear of the field.
FINANCIALLY FAMOUS - Buffeted on jumping away.
EXCENIA – Raced wide early. Bumped heavily leaving the 300m by PETITE PALACE and became awkwardly placed at heels. Jockey B. Thornton the rider of PETITE PALACE was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding.
ESPRIT DU JOUR – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped FINANCIALLY FAMOUS. Raced wide.
