GENERAL
Stewards accepted the explanation tendered by Trainer P. Webster regarding the late rider declaration of SKYWOLF (Race 9).
Race 1: TEDDY BEARS PICNIC 2 AUGUST BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1000 M
The start of this race was delayed by approximately three (3) minutes due to MR GALAZI momentarily getting its head under the front of the barrier partition and dislodging its bridle and blinkers in the process. Once the gelding’s gear was re-fitted, MR GALAZI underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start.
PANTELONE – Bumped on the hindquarters shortly after the start and became unbalanced. Leaving the 300m, obliged to shift in after becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of I AM VOODOO.
MR GALAZI – Raced wide for the majority.
BOODUA ROMANCE – Leaving the 600m, had to be steadied after attempting to improve into a narrow run between MINIMAL, which shifted in and ONE 'N' ONLY, which shifted out in an attempt to improve. Approaching the winning post, obliged to shift in after becoming awkwardly placed on the heels of I AM VOODOO.
ENUFF PILLS – Shifted in at the start bumping MINIMAL and was buffeted between runners. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
ARISPHERE – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
MINIMAL – Bumped at the start. Jockey J. Bayliss reported his mount did not travel comfortably throughout the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
TARPS – Raced wide for the majority.
Race 2: XXXX QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD FILLIES HANDICAP 1200 M
JUST PRECIOUS – Bumped at the start. Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor reported his mount failed to let down as expected. Had difficulty obtaining clear running passing the 300m and was obliged to shift wider to improve.
BEREZKA – Laid in passing the 1000m before being corrected. Raced three wide throughout.
CREATIVITY MISS – Fractious in the barriers and as a result began awkwardly. Apprentice B. Wheeler reported he became concerned with the filly’s action over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have an elevated heart rate and poor recovery. Trainer J. Mason was advised to report back on the filly’s condition in the days subsequent.
QUEENSTAR – Raced wide until the 700m.
ESPRIT DU JOUR – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped JUST PRECIOUS. Had difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight and was obliged to shift in to secure clear running. When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice C. Vitler stated the filly, who was stepping up in grade today, may be better suited to distances shorter than that of today’s event.
WANTSOMEMOREOFIT – Slow to begin. Raced wide.
HEY CHARDONNAY – Over raced in the early stages.
Race 3: SKY RACING BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP 1600 M
GALIFIANAKIS (IRE) – Began awkwardly and bumped with CONNECTICUT.
NORTHERN DECREE (NZ) – Over raced in the early stages. Had difficulty obtaining clear running on entering the home straight.
JUST FLYING – Bumped at the start. Laid in under pressure approaching the 300m before being corrected.
MERCHANT FLYER – Passing the 300m, was momentarily inconvenienced when contacted by NORTHERN DECREE (NZ) which shifted out to improve. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey D. McGillivray stated the intention was to settle further forward however in his opinion, the gelding would be best suited ridden more conservatively and may benefit from a step up in distance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
AERIAL DANCER – Began awkwardly. Approaching the 300m, became awkwardly placed at the heels of CHINCHILLA AHEAD which shifted in and away from JUST FLYING which laid in under pressure. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey D. Thornton stated his mount travelled only fairly throughout the event and when asked for an effort in the straight, failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion, the mare may benefit from the addition of blinkers. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
CONNECTICUT – Began awkwardly, contacted JUST FLYING, blundered and bumped with GALIFIANAKIS (IRE).
CHINCHILLA AHEAD – Approaching the 300m, shifted in and away from JUST FLYING which laid in under pressure.
Race 4: CLIMATE RENTAL SOLUTIONS OPEN HANDICAP 1600 M
The start of this race was delayed by approximately two (2) minutes due to the horses arriving late to the barriers.
CHRYSAOR – Approaching the 500m, had to take evasive action after becoming awkwardly placed at the heels of the weakening BROOKHAVEN.
BROOKHAVEN – Passing the 500m, commenced to weaken before being restrained from the race near the 300m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained fractures to both sesamoids in the near foreleg and was humanely euthanized. Postmortem samples were taken for analysis.
COSMIC VEGA (IRE) – When questioned regarding the performance, Jockey J. Guthmann-Chester stated the gelding did not appreciate the slow early tempo and when placed under pressure on entering the home straight, failed to quicken.
A DEEL OF HUMOUR – Began awkwardly. Over raced in the early stages.
THIS'LLBETHEONE – Began awkwardly.
THE DROVER – Slow to begin. Over raced in the early and middle stages.
CHICA MOJITO (NZ) – Connections advised a change of tactics, attempt to settle further forward. Ridden accordingly. Shifted in on jumping.
Race 5: CORPORATE TRAVELLER QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD HANDICAP 1200 M
The start of this race was delayed by approximately five (5) minutes due to a delay in Race 4.
PRETTY DUBIOUS – When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey D. Thornton could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a poor recovery. Trainer representative J. Coetzee was advised to report back on the condition of PRETTY DUBIOUS in the days subsequent.
SPECIAL ARTIST – Began awkwardly. Raced wide for the majority. Approaching the 700m, had to be steadied after becoming awkwardly placed at heels.
STIKTODASCRYPT – Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.
STRAZ DANZ – Slow to begin.
ALPHA SOFIE – Approaching the 700m, had to be steadied after becoming awkwardly placed at heels. Shortly after straightening after shifting out in an attempt to improve, was carried in by STIKTODASCRYPT which laid in under pressure, forcing ALPHA SOFIE to shift in to obtain clear running.
BRITANNIA ROSE – Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.
PIERTAGA – Trainer R. Tyrell was fined $200 pursuant to LR 67(1) for failing to declare a rider by the prescribed time.
Race 6: PRODIGY+ BENCHMARK 90 HANDICAP 1000 M
VODKA MARTINI – Apprentice C. Sutherland reported he was disappointed with the gelding’s performance. Trainer K. Schweida reported it is now his intention to send the gelding for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
WANDA ROX – Began awkwardly. Shortly after the start, had to be steadied after becoming awkwardly placed at the heels of ZOUPERB (App. B. Wheeler) which shifted in. Apprentice B. Wheeler was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding for this incident. Raced wide for the majority. Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
APPIN GIRL – Raced in restricted room for a short distance passing the 100m.
BRERETON – Raced in restricted room for a short distance passing the 150m.
ZOUPERB – Raced wide throughout.
MAXIMUM OUTPUT – Apprentice R. Thorburn accidently dropped his whip near the 150m.
FLAMING CONQUEST – Began awkwardly.
After the running of this race, the track was upgraded to a Soft 5 at 3:11pm.
Race 7: PONTING WINES BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1400 M
LIBERTY STEPS – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced wide for the majority.
CENTRAL PARK – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Tightened for room shortly thereafter between BIG BOY GEORGE and CHO OYU. Over raced in the early stages. Passing the 500m, inconvenienced having to steady to avoid the heels of SIAN STAR who shifted in. Jockey C. Graham reported her mount became awkward in its stride shortly after entering the home straight and as such elected not to pressure the gelding over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Trainer B. Healey was advised to report back on CENTRAL PARK’s condition in the days subsequent.
PIVOTAL LAD – Approaching the 600m, momentarily inconvenienced when contacted by SIAN STAR which attempted to shift out.
SIAN STAR – Bounded in the air as the start was effected. Passing the 600m when attempted to
BIG BOY GEORGE– Began awkwardly. Laid out under pressure in the early part of the home straight.
BINDI'S CHOICE – Approaching the 1000m, raced in restricted room for a considerable distance to the inside of HOLY FLASH which shifted in despite the efforts of its rider.
HOOT 'N' HOLLER – Trainer R. Heathcote was fined $100 pursuant to LR 67(1) for failing to declare a rider by the prescribed time. Raced wide for the majority.
DREAM LANTERN – Began awkwardly. Over raced in the early stages. When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance. Trainer L. Hatch advised it is his intention to spell the mare and will conduct a blood analysis and will report back to Stewards with any adverse findings. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a minor laceration to the off-hind leg.
CHO OYU – Bumped at the start. Raced wide for the majority.
FLYWHEEL – Passing the 600m, after improving onto heels was obliged to steady.
RINGER'S REWARD – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped CHO OYU.
Race 8: U&U RECRUITMENT QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD COLTS AND GELDINGS HANDICAP 1200 M
Correct weight was delayed when a protest was lodged by second placegetter T. Marshall rider of TEN GOOD REASONS (NZ) alleging interference against first placegetter LEAD ME ON ridden by Apprentice C. Vitler over the final 50m of the home straight.
After considering submissions and viewing the Stewards patrol footage, it was established that whilst the interference suffered was significant resulting in TEN GOOD REASONS (NZ) having to shift out and alter course, given the proximity to the winning post and half a length margin, Stewards were unable to be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred, that TEN GOOD REASON (NZ) would have finished ahead of LEAD ME ON and therefore, Stewards dismissed the protest and declared correct weight on the Judges semaphored numbers.
LEAD ME ON – Over raced in the middle stages when being restrained to obtain a position with cover. Laid in under pressure in the home straight to a point passing the 50m, shifted out abruptly. Trainer C. Anderson was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding.
BENZOU – When asked to comment on the performance, Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor stated it was not his intention to settle so far forward, however; after beginning well and the lack of early speed shown by other runners, he found himself in a more forward position. He further added on straightening, BENZOU was disappointing in its finishing efforts. Trainer B. Healey advised it is now his intention to send the gelding for a spell.
KIWI SPIRIT – Slow to begin.
NEIL – Began awkwardly. Raced in restricted room on entering the home straight between BENZOU which shifted out marginally and LEAD ME ON which shifted in. Jockey J. Bayliss reported his mount commenced to hang out from the 500m. Stable representative for the M. Dunn stables reported the near side bubble cheeker had shifted which the stable attributed to the gelding’s performance.
JOPPA LANE – Bounded in the air as the start was effected.
TEN GOOD REASONS (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Over raced in the early and middle stages. Passing the 50m, was severely hampered by LEAD ME ON which shifted out abruptly and as a result was carried wider.
Race 9: LADBROKES MATES MODE POTS BENCHMARK 78 HANDICAP 1200 M
SKYWOLF – Began awkwardly and buffeted between runners shortly thereafter. Passing the 1000m, became awkwardly placed on the heels of DEFIANT SPIRIT (K. Wilson-Taylor) which shifted in to obtain cover. Jockey K. Wilson-Taylor was advised to exercise greater care.
TOWN CRIER– Slow to begin. Raced wide in the early stages.
BULLION BOY – Began awkwardly and shifted in. Passing the 1000m, was carried wider by CASPERNOVA which was hampered. Held up for clear running approaching the 300m and was obliged to shift in to improve.
CASPERNOVA– Shifted in at the start. Momentarily inconvenienced approaching the 1000m after SKYWOLF had to be steadied to avoid heels.
CRAFTY EAGLE – Apprentice B. Wheeler was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for improper riding in that after passing the line, he excessively restrained his mount when pulling up quickly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
ZELGARIA – When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice C. Vitler stated his mount travelled comfortably however failed to let down. As ZELGARIA was removed from the course prior to 30mins after the race, ZELGARIA was unable to be examined by the on-course veterinarian and therefore, Trainer M. Dunn was advised the gelding would require veterinary clearance including the results of an endoscopic scope prior to resuming racing. Trainer M. Dunn was reprimanded pursuant to AR 165(3) for permitted the horse to leave on-course prior to the prescribed time.
GIVE GIGGLES (NZ) – Raced wide in the early stages.
BONDED AFFAIR – Over raced for the majority of the event. Approaching the 800m whilst racing fierce, had to be checked to avoid the heels of MUSCHIALLI (App. C. Collis) which shifted in before being corrected. Apprentice C. Collis was advised to exercise greater care.
