Race 1: ROYAL GEORGE HOTEL ROSEWOOD QTIS 3YO MAIDEN PLATE – 860M

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards permitted jockey D. Smith and Trainer B. Wakefield, the connections of 2nd placegetter ROMAN AUREUS, to view the Stewards patrol footage over the concluding stages to ascertain whether there were grounds to lodge an objection against EMOTIVE MOUNTAIN being declared the winner. After viewing the film, the connections advised that they did not wish to proceed and correct weight was declared on the judge’s semaphored numbers.

EMOTIVE MOUNTAIN – Hung in whilst placed under pressure with the whip on a number of occasions in the home straight. Stewards advised Apprentice M. Nakao, in the presence of jockeys advocate Mr. B. Saunders, that whilst they accepted that she had corrected the gelding on each occasion that it hung in after being struck with the whip, in their opinion, she would be expected to ride in a hands and heels fashion in similar circumstances in the future or, alternatively, use the whip in her right hand if possible in an attempt to prevent the horse from shifting ground.

OUR BOY BORRIS – Bumped heavily on the hindquarters rounding the home turn and, as a result, became unbalanced. Raced in restricted room for a short distance near the 200m, and then had to be steadied when placed in restricted room again near the 100m when EMOTIVE MOUNTAIN shifted in whilst hanging in.

ROMAN AUREUS – Made the home turn awkwardly, and shifted out bumping another runner.

ZOOMFIELD – Failed to muster early speed and, as a result, settled further back in the field than anticipated. Hung out rounding the home turn. Disappointed for a run near the 150m, and was forced to shift back in to the inside to secure clear running.

BOOM OR BUST – Stewards permitted Apprentice S. Tomlinson to ride the filly claiming only 1.5kg of his 2kg allowance, when no other apprentice was available. Apprentice Tomlinson was fined $200 for failing to claim his full allowance. After being crossed near the 700m, the filly commenced to race keenly and was steadied from heels.

PERFECT SAGA – Raced wide without cover throughout. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.

SUMMER FLOWER – Began awkwardly. On return to scale, jockey S. Cormack reported that his mount felt short in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be lame in its off fore leg. Trainer A. Sawden was advised that the filly will require a veterinary clearance prior to resuming racing.

Race 2: VANDERFIELD (JOHN DEER) GATTON CLASS 2 H’CAP – 860M

JACKSON STORM – Raced wide without cover throughout, and hung out rounding the home turn near the 500m and shifted wider on the track.

MILLINERY – Slow to begin. Raced in restricted room for a considerable distance passing the 700m when attempting to obtain a run where there was doubtful room. Apprentice M. Wishart was advised to exercise greater care, and to ensure that there is sufficient room, when attempting to obtain a run in similar circumstances in the future.

Race 3: TAB MAIDEN PLATE – 2000M

BRANDS HATCH – Steadied from heels whilst weakening near the 500m. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the gelding’s seemingly disappointing performance, jockey T. Brooker advised that after beginning well she obtained the leading position, without having to overly pressure the gelding. She added that the gelding travelled reasonably throughout however, in her opinion, it was not suited by the tight turning track and may be better suited being ridden back in the field if circumstances permit. Stewards noted the explanation. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no apparent abnormalities.

I KNOW YVES – Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously for a short distance approaching the 1000m. Bumped on the hindquarters by a runner to its inside approaching the 400m. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

C’MOME PADDYREILLY – Bumped by another runner shortly after the start.

DARAMER – Began awkwardly. Clipped heels and blundered passing the 1100m when FURY OF THE STORM shifted in. Apprentice H. English, the rider of FURY OF THE STORM, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR. 131(a) in that passing the 1100m she permitted her mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of DARAMER which clipped heels and blundered. Apprentice English’s licence to ride in races was suspended for 8 days, to commence at midnight on Saturday 10 August 2019 and expire at midnight on Sunday 18 August 2019. In determining penalty, Stewards took into consideration Apprentice English’s guilty plea and her prior good record in relation to this rule.

GIVE HER ROOM – Raced keenly and was steadied from heels near the 900m.

PRINCESS MONA – Jumped in the air as the start was effected and lost ground.

TIPPLER – Slow to muster early speed and, as a result, settled further back in the field than anticipated. Raced wide throughout. Following the seemingly disappointing performance, Stewards requested that the mare undergo a veterinary examination which revealed that the mare was exhibiting cardiac arrhythmia. The trainer’s representative was advised that the mare will require a veterinary clearance, including the results of an ECG, and must trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to resuming racing.

Race 5: ROYAL HOTEL GATTON CLASS 3 PLATE – 1400M

SUGAR BUZZ – Apprentice M. Wishart accidentally dropped her whip near the 150m.

FOXLEIGH – Bumped on jumping away, and lost ground.

WINTER SONATA – Raced wide for the majority.

AMERICAN SUMMER – Stewards permitted Apprentice S. Tomlinson to ride the mare claiming only 1kg of his 2kg allowance, when no other suitable claiming apprentice was available. Apprentice Tomlinson was fined $200 for failing to claim his full allowance. Bumped on jumping away.

DEVILLAIN – Raced keenly in the early stages, and was steadied from heels near the 1200m. Hung out rounding the home turn. Bumped and became unbalanced near the 200m when SPECIAL THING (App. C. Bayliss) shifted in whilst laying in under hard riding. Apprentice C. Bayliss was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances.

SECRET SITES – Slow to begin, and then tightened for room at the start and lost ground.

I’M FAVULOUS – Disappointed for a run and steadied near the 150m.

SPECIAL THING – Hung in under pressure in the home straight. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly improved performance, trainer’s representative L. Sears advised that whilst on paper the mare’s form may seem only fair prior to its spell, in her opinion, it was racing reasonably and was not being beaten by great distances. She added that, in her opinion, the mare has benefited from its spell prior to today’s race, and advised that the stable had modified the horse’s track work program in preparation for this event. Stewards noted the explanation.

Race 8: BOOK SEAFOOD BUFFET LUNCH – FRI OCT 4TH CLASS 1 H’CAP – 1100M

CARTLAND – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When questioned by Stewards regarding the seemingly disappointing performance, jockey S. Galloway advised that after beginning well the mare was able to obtain a position one out one back, and travelled comfortably throughout, however when placed under pressure it failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. He went on to say that, in his opinion, the mare may not have been suited to the firm racing surface today. Stewards noted the explanation. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no apparent abnormalities.

NEWS DIRECTOR – Had difficulty obtaining clear running for some distance approaching and passing the 100m. Checked to avoid heels near the 50m when HARRY’S STAR shifted in. A.
