Toowoomba Race Meeting - POWER OF SUCCESS - 03/07/26
Stewards followed up with trainer P. Wallace due to concerns raised after the below market expectation performance at Clifford Park on Friday July 3rd. P. Wallace reported that on return to the stables POWER OF SUCCESS developed a swollen eye, which had swelled up overnight following the race meeting. After treatment, the eye had returned to normal, and the swelling was attributed to a clod or debris from the racing surface. After observing photos of the injury, Stewards advised P Wallace that POWER OF SUCCESS would require a veterinary certificate of health prior to its next engagement and deemed the injury to have contributed to the overall performance of the gelding. P Wallace further advised that POWER OF SUCCESS had pulled up well, outside of the swollen eye, and he will continue with the gelding’s current preparation.

RACE 3: LADBROKES PLACE EXTRA TO 10TH BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP     860 M

Correct weight was delayed to allow Stewards to review the Stewards patrol footage due to two separate incidents that may have affecting the placings. The first at approximately the 700m and the second rounding the home turn. After viewing the available patrol footage Stewards elected not to lodge an objection on behalf of the connections for either incident and as a result declared correct weight.

Apprentice S. Champkin was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding in this incident. On the evidence Stewards believed that although both GYPSY TRICKS and SWITCH THE STARS had established positions to the inside of SAPANA’S PEARL, both failed to take the corner well and that had contributed to the incident. Rider J. Lloyd was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(b) for failing to ride his mount out to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have sustained a small laceration to the left fore coronary band.

Bellamy was fined $200.

RACE 6: NOLAN'S TRANSPORT BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP   1100 M

THE LOUVRE – Raced wide in the early stages before restraining to shift in to obtain cover near the 800m. Approaching the 250m, had to be checked and alter course to avoid the heels of XERRI which had suffered interference. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

XERRI – Slow to begin. Approaching the 800m when being eased, made contact with the running rail. Approaching the 400m, had to be checked and became very unbalanced. Stewards inquired into this incident where it was established that leading up to the 400m XERRI had obtained a neat run to the inside of APOLLO TEN. APOLLO TEN then shifted in slightly, when laying in and as a result XERRI raced in restricted room before clipping the heels of APPOLO TEN and becoming unbalanced. Although XERRI had clipped heels and became very unbalanced, Stewards could not be satisfied that this incident was solely the result of APPOLO TEN shifting in due to the evidence provided by riders and available patrol footage. Nonetheless Stewards were satisfied at a point leading up to the incident, XERRI had established a position to the inside of APOLO TEN and felt that APOLLO TEN was laying in prior to the incident, so elected to issue rider T. Fenlon with a severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding in this incident.

SURREAL ASCOT – Raced keenly in the middle stages. Rider D. Peisley stated he was instructed to let the mare travel freely, as the stable advised him that she has a breathing issue. After encouraging his mount early, the mare raced keenly, and as a result, he allowed the mare to continue to stride forward to attempt to allow the mare to travel comfortably and comply with instructions. Stewards asked trainer R. Pereira the reason for the seemingly improved performance in today’s events. She confirmed the nature of the instructions issued to D. Peisley and explained that at the most recent starts SURREAL ASCOT had not been performing up to the stables expectations and attributed this to the mare’s breathing issues. R Pereira added with the addition of the winkers and with the mare allowed to travel at a high cruising speed and rhythm to assist her breathing, along with a slight drop back in grade, felt these factors attributed to the improved performance today. Stewards noted her comments.

CHARMED PASSAGE (NZ) – Apprentice K. Lenton reported the gelding wanted to lay out throughout and may have come to the end of it’s preparation. Trainer D. Groves confirmed CHARMED PASSAGE (NZ) would now be sent for a spell.  Apprentice K. Lenton was reminded of her obligation to ride her mounts out to the finish.
