GENERAL:
From Gold Coast Turf Club Meeting 19 April 2003:
Trainer M Thexton was fined the sum of $50 for an ineligible nomination of IT'S NOT LUCK in the maiden event on the program.
RACE 1: BRANNIGAN'S TAVERN H'CAP (CLASS 6) - 1200 M.
MINER'S UNION was slow to begin.
RACE 2: MACAU JOCKEY CLUB H'CAP (OPEN H'CAP) - 1400 M.
No incidents to report.
RACE 3: AUCKLAND RACING CLUB H'CAP (1MWLY H'CAP) - 1400 M.
SINGAPORE was marginally slow to begin.
TIMBER TYCOON raced fiercely in the middle stages.
Inside the 800m CONJUROR commenced to lay out and approaching the 700m blundered after striking the heels of SPONGE BOB.
After entering the home straight until over the concluding stages FRAAR IMAGE was held up for clear running.
SEMI ZOOM was held up for clear running until inside the final 200m.
RACE 4: CULPANS ELECTRICAL KEN RUSSELL MEMORIAL CLASSIC (QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD) (LISTED RACE) - 1300 M.
The start of this race was delayed when BUSKING proved extremely difficult to load. Trainer J Morrisey was advised that he must obtain a further Barrier Certificate for the filly prior to it racing again.
ANNIE LA VIE was tightened for room at the start between TORNADO ALLEY and BUSKING which jumped inwards.
BLOODWOOD was slow to begin.
PISTOL KNIGHT jumped away awkwardly.
Approaching the 900m PISTOL KNIGHT had to be steadied off the heels of BUSKING which shifted in and away from ST NICCO. ANNIE LA VIE which was following had to be steadied off the heels of PISTOL KNIGHT and in doing so shifted in momenhtarily crowding BLOODWOOD.
POLKA QUEEN was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the straight.
RACE 5: H HARVEY GOLD COAST GUINEAS (QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLDS) - 1400 M.
JARABU jumped out at the start and forced BUNKER on to DANSKER. As a result LANA BELLE, after being slow to begin, had to check off the heels of DANSKER.
MIGHTY ICON, after jumping away awkwardly, shifted out and hampered STRIKING VICTORY.
Inside the 1100m JARABU had to be steadied off the heels of BUNKER. CHARLIE BUB which was following had to be steadied as a consequence.
DIFFICULT was obliged to race wide in the early stages.
Approaching the 600m DIFFICULT which was racing fiercely shifted out resulting in JARABU, CHARLIE BUB and WHAT A GUY being forced wider on the track.
Approaching the 200m CHARLIE BUB had to be steadied off the heels of WHAT A GUY which shifted in under pressure. M Rodd (WHAT A GUY) was advised to exercise more care when shifting ground in future.
After entering the home straight until inside the 200m JARABU was held up for clear running.
RACE 6: NORCO PAULS MILK A.D. HOLLINDALE STAKES (GROUP 2) - 1800 M.
THE KILDARE KID and ROSE ARCHWAY were crowded for room at the start between BUSH PADRE and DRESS CIRCLE both of which shifted ground. In this incident THE KILDARE KID had to be checked off the heels of BUSH PADRE.
SIR KINDLE was slow to begin.
Approaching the first turn MR. BUREAUCRAT commenced to race fiercely and shifted in hampering SIR KINDLE.
Inside the 300m COGNAC TRADER accidentally dropped his whip.
When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of MR. BUREAUCRAT, Jockey A Robinson stated that his mount pulled hard in the early and middle stages and the speed of the race which developed into a sprint home, did not suit the gelding's racing pattern. Jockey A Robinson also made an observation that in his opinion the pattern of racing today did not appear to be suiting back markers. Trainer W Hailes agreed with Jockey Robinson's comments. These explanations were noted. A post race veterinary examination of MR. BUREAUCRAT revealed no abnormality and a swab sample was taken.
RACE 7: CARLTON DRAUGHT PRIME MINISTER'S CUP (GROUP 2) - 2400 M.
On a request from Trainer H Norman and as no other rider was available, Stewards permitted J Taylor to ride CREATIONS at 1 kg overweight. J Taylor was fined the sum of $100.
RESTLESS was slow to begin.
Passing the winning post on the first occasion RESTLESS shifted out and forced BUSH TRIUMPH wider on the track.
During the middle stages of the event MIDNIGHT DEAL over-raced when being restrained off the heels of LAURINEL ARGIE.
J Byrne, the rider of LAURINEL ARGIE, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding in that near the 400 m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of MIKE resulting in that horse being checked when tightened on to HOMEWRECKER. J Byrne was suspended for a period of 8 meetings to commence at midnight 11 May 2003 and expire at midnight 24 May 2003 and was fined the sum of $2,000.
When questioned regarding the performance of RESTLESS, L Beasley stated that in his opinion the gelding failed to run out a strong 2400m and as a result commenced to compound when placed under pressure in the straight. A post race veterinary examination of RESTLESS failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 8: THE OAKS STUD H'CAP (NMW H'CAP) - 2200 M.
STRONG ROSE was declared a late scratching at 2.58 pm on veterinary advice. Following a report from Trainer A Bailey that he had received advice from stable staff expressing concern regarding the mare's condition, the club's veterinary surgeon, Dr. P Jeffries, was dispatched to Mr Bailey's stable in order to examine the mare. The club's vet subsequently reported that upon arrival at Mr Bailey's stable STRONG ROSE had already died. Queensland Racing Science Centre veterinary surgeon Dr. B Young immediately attended Mr Bailey's stables in the company of a stipendiary steward whereupon samples were taken from the mare. These samples will be submitted for analysis.
No racing incidents to report.
ALL WINNERS, EXQUISITELY, TORNADO ALLEY, HOMEWRECKER and MR. BUREAUCRAT WERE SWABBED.
