Race 1: $95 Membership From 1 Jan 08 Class 4 H’Cap – 900m.
1st – Lightning Brown 2nd – Watapen 3rd – Coreinvestor 4th – Langlaw
EDIBLES (W. Pearson) reared as the gates opened resulting in the horse losing valuable ground.
LANGLAW (A. Merritt) and WATAPEN (D. Griffin) were both inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 100m.
PUFF THE MAGIC (R. Goltz) pulled up sore in the near fore leg. Trainer G. Hay was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before the gelding races again.
Race 2: Oz Design Furniture 3YO Maiden Plate – 1000m.
1st – Racing For Gold 2nd – Hay Annie 3rd – Cachinnation 4th – Take A Stand
REFINANCE (App L. Rolls) began awkwardly.
HAY ANNIE (App S. Drake) was tightened on jumping away between CANEFLY (D. Griffin) and RACING FOR GOLD (J. Sharp) which was taken in by CACHINNATION (P. Hammersley).
Near the 600m CACHINNATION threw it’s head in the air and raced ungenerously for a short distance.
BRAVE THE BOSS (H. Hamada) overraced in the middle stages.
REFINANCE raced wide for the majority of the event.
Following the running of this race the track was upgraded to dead.
Race 3: Chef Star Consultancy Class 1 H’Cap – 1000m.
1st – Headlight 2nd – Scudder 3rd – Stature 4th – Sly Kick
C. Gilby was reminded of his obligations to be on course 1 hour prior to his first riding engagement.
D. Griffin was injured after being thrown from GRANDE VARGUE in the barriers. GRANDE VARGUE was subsequently declared a late scratching at 2.04 p.m. by order of stewards. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on the gelding were ordered to be refunded. All winning bets were ordered to be paid less 31 cents in the dollar for a win and 27 cents in the dollar for a place on the face value of the ticket.
THUNDERSHOT (R. Goltz) was also declared a late withdrawal at 2.06 p.m. by order of stewards acting on veterinary advice after the horse was found to have blood in one nostril. Prior to the announcement of correct weight all monies invested on the gelding were ordered to be refunded. All winning bets were ordered to be paid less 23 cents in the dollar for a win and 18 cents in the dollar for a place on the face value of the ticket.
BUZZWORD (App L. Dittman) and SLY KICK (C. Gilby) came together on jumping away.
Near the 800m BUZZWORD had to be steadied off the heels of SLY KICK which shifted in.
Near the 800m STATURE (K. Banks) improved up onto the heels of HEADLIGHT (S. Scriven) and had to be steadied.
SCUDDER (P. Hammersley) raced wide for the majority of the event.
STATURE was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and until near the 200m.
SCUDDER was inclined to lay in under pressure over the final 200m.
Race 4: Commercial Kitchen Company Maiden Plate – 1400m.
1st – Affront 2nd – Legal Fee 3rd – Witches Chase 4th – Clear Conscience
Stewards accepted the explanations tendered by trainers H. Wilson (MY GRANDEUR) and T. Perkins (SAVAGE STORM) regarding late notification of riders.
PERFECT GLASS (App K. Yeung) was tightened on jumping away between ZULU MAN (App L. Rolls) and IN DA NANG (App L. Dittman) both of which shifted ground.
SNEAKY SNEAKY (App J. Clarke) began awkwardly.
AFFRONT (T. Treichel) and WITCHES CHASE (D. Pires) came together on jumping away.
SAVAGE STORM (D. Hayse) and MY GRANDEUR (W. Pearson) were crowded for room shortly after the start between CHANISM (M. Hughes) and LEGAL FEE (D. Barron) which shifted out.
Approaching the 1000m ZULU MAN overraced on the heels of CLEAR CONSCIENCE (D. Griffin) and shifted in making heavy contact with the running rail. As a consequence IN DA NANG had to be steadied and shifted out resulting in SANTENAY (P. Hammersley) being tightened for racing room.
LEGAL FEE raced wide for the majority of the event.
ZULU MAN (App L. Rolls) shifted ground badly over the final 200m of the event.
When questioned regarding the handling of CHANISM in the middle stages of the event which saw the horse race at the rear of the field some 5 lengths from the second last runner, App M. Hughes explained that the instructions were to ride the horse back in the field and after being caught wide he endeavoured to ease his mount but the horse dropped the bit at that stage resulting in it losing more ground than expected. Stable representative for trainer P. Balzen confirmed the instructions were to ride the horse back in the field and endeavour to obtain runs to the inside over the latter stages. Stewards noted their explanations for future reference.
Race 5: Sunlover Solar 2YO Maiden Plate – 900m.
1st – Tears’N’Cheers 2nd – Feisty Manner 3rd – Helado 4th – Heza Flashman
Trainer M. Flanigan was fined the sum of $50.00 for failing to produce the document of description for HEZA FLASHMAN as per the requirements of AR59A.
IN BOLD FASHION (App S. Drake) began awkwardly and shifted out.
IN BOLD FASHION hung out rounding the home turn.
Race 6: Michel’s Patisserie Class 3 Plate – 1800m.
1st – Destination 2nd – Ultimate Gold 3rd – Line By Line 4th - Glogirl
SPRITELY NOTE (App L. Rolls) stood flat footed and refused to jump which resulted in the horse losing considerable ground. Trainer S. O’Sullivan was advised she must obtain a further barrier certificate for SPRITELY NOTE before the gelding races again.
LINE BY LINE (App L. Dittman) overraced in the early and middle stages of the event.
Race 7: Geoff Fanning 50 Years In The Australian Racing Industry Class 3 H’Cap - 1200m.
1st – Main Vein 2nd – Our James 3rd – Rock The Roses 4th - Shobelle
ROCK THE ROSES (App L. Rolls) was slow to begin.
EZERICO (D. Barron) was tightened shortly after jumping away between ERSILIA (App S. Drake) and GALANGAL (J. Warrington) which shifted in.
Race 8: Stuart James Memorial Class 2 H’Cap – 1400m.
1st – Sir Teles 2nd – Under Construction 3rd – Rapid Babe 4th – In No Danger
The start of this race was delayed when OZJURIA (App L. Dittman) proved difficult to load.
OZJURIA and MISS DARBONNAIRE (L. Karklis) came together and made heavy contact on jumping away.
MISS DARBONNAIRE overraced in the early stages and near the 900m shifted out forcing RAPID BABE (App M. Hughes) and GATAKERS BAY (T. Treichel) wider on the track.
GATAKERS BAY (T. Treichel) and RAPID BABE were both caught racing wide for the majority of the event.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION (D. Griffin) was held up for clear running rounding the home turn and when endeavouring to obtain clear running shifted out making contact with SIR TELES (W. Pearson).
OZJURIA was held up for clear running from the 300m to the 200m when caught behind the tiring IZA BAD (D. Barron) and IN NO DANGER (App L. Rolls) which had improved up onto the outside.
Near the 100m DELL AMBY (App S. Drake) had to be momentarily steadied off the heels of GATAKERS BAY which shifted out under pressure.
Correct weight was delayed to enable D. Griffin the rider of second placegetter UNDER CONSTRUCTION to view the official film to determine if there were grounds to lodge a protest against W. Pearson rider of the winner SIR TELES regarding an incident on the home turn. However, after viewing the films D. Griffin advised he did not wish to proceed with the matter and correct weight was given on the placings as semaphored.
