GENERAL
 
 
Apprentice J Williams was fined $300 for having in his possession and using a mobile telephone whilst in the vicinity of the jockey’s room. In considering penalty stewards were satisfied that there was no nefarious activity in relation to the use of the telephone and further apprentice Williams’ relative inexperience as an apprentice rider. AR218(4)(c).
 
Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today’s meeting
 
Race 1 – BIRDONAWING – R Wiggins +1kg
Race 2 – ROMAN QUEEN – J Guthmann-Chester +1/2kg
Race 3 – FAILED TO MENTION – R Wiggins +1/2kg

Race 6 – DURUNDUR LAD – R Wiggins +1/2kg

Race 1: XXXX GOLD COAST CUP 7 MAY QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Plate 1400 metres
 
LEINSTER – Slow to begin. Jockey N Callow reported that the gelding, which was having its first start today, did not feel comfortable on the prevailing track conditions.
 
ROADTRIP – After being loaded in the barriers, became fractious and as a result was removed from the barriers, examined by the veterinary surgeon, and subsequently deemed fit to race.
 
SIZZLING SAMURAI – Jockey M McGuren was reprimanded for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m AR132(7)(a)(ii).
 
BINDING – Raced three-wide during the early and middle stages.
 
BIRDONAWING – Jockey R Wiggins was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m AR132(7)(a)(ii).
 
HURI BLACK – Laid out rounding the home turn.
 
YANKEE BLOSSOM – Slow to begin.
 
Following the running of race 1 the track was downgraded to a heavy 8 retrospective to include that race.
 
Race 2: HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLOVIS Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap 1400 metres
 
SOUNDS DIVINE – Slow to begin and as a result settled further back than anticipated. Jockey C Robertson could offer no tangible explanation for the below market expectation performance of the filly. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.
 
BALLISTIC BABE – Jockey N Callow was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m AR132(7)(a)(ii).
 
BRIDEZILLA (NZ) – Held up approaching the home turn.
 
MISS HAPPY HOUR – Jockey J Huxtable was reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions prior to the 100m AR132(7)(a)(ii).
 
STAR SEEKER – Apprentice J Williams was reprimanded for using his whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m AR132(7)(a)(ii).
 
ROMAN QUEEN – Raced three wide in the early stages.
 
Race 3: STONE N TILE WORLD Colts, Geldings and Entires Maiden Handicap 1400 metres
 
SO YOU KNEW – Jockey G Cartwright explained that whilst on face value the performance of the gelding may have appeared disappointing, in her opinion being forced to race wide during the event combined with racing first up in todays event on a heavy track were major contributing factors in relation to the performance and in the circumstances she was satisfied with the geldings run.
 
GULF OF ODESSA – After beginning only fairly, was ridden aggressively in the early stages and as a consequence over raced for some distance. Jockey B Pengelly advised that in his opinion the gelding over racing in the early and middle stages were the major contributing factors for the below market expectation performance.
 
BULLET HERO – Over raced in the middle stages.
 
SOFTEN IT UP – On returning to scale jockey C Taylor reported that the gelding failed to muster the speed that he had anticipated and as a result settled further back than he anticipated. Jockey Taylor also added that in his opinion the gelding raced somewhat flat today.
 
YES WE'RE READY – Stewards permitted jockey See to ride the gelding 1kg overweight when there was no other suitable rider available. Jockey T See was subsequently fined $300 for accepting the ride when subsequently overweight AR211(1). Near the 450m, was momentarily placed in restricted room and eased. On returning to scale jockey T See reported that after receiving interference at the 450m the gelding felt uncomfortable in its action and for this reason he elected not to place the gelding under pressure from this point as he had concerns with the horse’s action. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities other than the gelding had shifted its off-fore plate in running.
 
CYCLONE BLACKIE – Began awkwardly and was then hampered shortly after the start. Held up rounding the home turn.
 
Race 4: 9 MILE INVESTMENTS BENCHMARK 60 Handicap 2200 metres
 
TURN ME OVER (NZ) – Over raced during the early stages.
 
D'CLONE (NZ) – After passing the winning post on the first occasion, raced in restricted room and as a consequence lost ground.
 
EL CHAPARRO – Began awkwardly. Raced three-wide from leaving the 900m.
 
PHYLAVE – After being caught wide in the early stages, was allowed to stride forward by its rider to obtain a position outside the leader near the 1300m.
 
LYNDALL – After passing the winning post on the first occasion, whilst racing keenly, improved to the inside of the heels of TURN ME OVER despite the efforts of its rider and as a consequence clipped heels and blundered.
 
KIRRO – Tightened for room at the start and lost ground.
 
Following the running of race 4 the track was downgraded to a heavy 9.
 
Race 5: WORKFORCE SOLUTIONS BENCHMARK 58 Handicap1100 metres
 
SHE'S A TIGRESS – Trainer C Anderson was fined $200 for the late rider notification LR67. Raced three-wide without cover throughout.
 
BATTLEDANCE – Slow to begin.
 
Race 6: SCHWARZ EXCAVATIONS BENCHMARK 58 Handicap1100 metres
 
FORTYFIVE PARKLANE – Declared a late scratching at 2:15pm at the request of trainer S McGuren due to the downgrade of the track.
 
NIC ME SOME – Declared a late scratching at 1:00pm at the request of trainer M Wilson due to the downgrade of the track.
 
BULLET RAIDERS – Steadied from heels shortly after the start.
 
ROYAL REBELLION – For some distance passing the 950m was forced to race in restricted room before being checked by its rider near the 850m when awkwardly placed at heels.
 
REDENZO GAL – Near the 950m, was tightened for room and checked when racing to the inside of DURUNDUR LAD which was taken in by BULLET RAIDERS which was in turn taken in by GREEN KUDOS which shifted in and away from MY ADELINE.
 
MY ADELINE – Began awkwardly. Raced three-wide without cover for the majority. Laid in under pressure for the majority.
 
DURUNDUR LAD – Began awkwardly. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have bled from both nostrils. As this was the first occasion on which the gelding had bled, it would now incur a 3-month bar from racing and further would be required to gallop 1000m in the presence of stewards prior to next racing.
 
Following the running of race 6 the track was downgraded to a heavy 10 retrospective to include that race.
 
Race 7: DARBY RACING NOW SYNDICATING IN QLD Class 2 Handicap 1800 metres
 
IMPEL GAZELLE (NZ) – Near the 800m, attempted to shift to a position outside the leader however was prevented from doing so by another runner. As a consequence, was eased by its rider. Held up for a considerable distance from passing the 500m.
 
ARIVAKOVA – Stewards accepted the explanation from trainer E Ensby in relation to the late rider notification.
 
NOPAIN – As Jockey T See was overweight, he was subsequently replaced by Jockey A Fancourt. Jockey See was fined $100 for accepting the ride when overweight AR211(1). Raced three-wide to a point near the 1200m.
 
JETT AUSTIN (NZ) – Began awkwardly, as a result lost considerable ground at the start. After being slow to begin, leaving the 1400m was allowed to stride forward by its rider and as a consequence obtained the leading position near the 1100m.
 
Race 8: THE LEG UP AUSTRALIA PODCAST Class 3 Handicap 1200 metres
 
LOCH LOMOND (NZ) – Declared a late scratching at 3:05pm at the request of trainer K Lees due to the downgrade of the track.
 
LE HEROS – Jumped in the air at the start and lost ground.
 
TICKLER – Stood flat footed at the start and lost ground. Jockey R Wiggins advised that in his opinion the gelding being slow to begin and then being reluctant to race through the kick back were the major contributing factors to the below market expectation performance.
 
ALATAR – Hung in under pressure in the home straight, proving difficult to ride out.
 
CHILLIWACK – Near the 900m, raced in restricted room and was eased. Approaching the 800m, was steadied to avoid the heels of PURE INDULGENCE which was taken in by DIXON BAY which shifted in when not completely clear. Jockey J Guthmann-Chester the rider of DIXON BAY was reprimanded as a result of this incident AR131(a).
 
DARING MAN – Slow to begin.
 
CONTESSA – Began awkwardly. Near the 900m, raced in restricted room and was eased. Laid in under pressure in the early stages of the home straight.
 
PURE INDULGENCE – Near the 900m, steadied to avoid heels.
 
Race 9: FAREWELL MICHAEL COSTA BENCHMARK 68 Handicap 1400 metres
 
OUR REBEL – Declared a late scratching at 12:25pm at the request of trainer D McColm due to the downgrade of the track.
 
Following the running of race 8, stewards questioned riders with respect to the visibility and state of the track due to continuing rainfall. After giving consideration to the views of the riding group, stewards, whom themselves had concerns with the suitability of the racing surface to continue racing, elected to abandon the final race at 4:20pm due to the continuing rainfall, poor visibility and the state of the track.
