Race 1: AMALGAMATED GROUP BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP 1800 M
COLD ONE – Began awkwardly. Near the 500m, tightened for room between RAPID CHEVAL (NZ) and MOON SWEEPER (Apprentice C. Vitler), which was shifting out from behind TOROS to obtain a run. Apprentice C. Vitler was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding in this incident. Apprentice C. Bellamy reported the gelding may be better suited to tracks with more give.

CAVALRY MAN – Made the crossing at the 1500m awkwardly.
GULF OF TOMINI – Stood flat footed as the start was effected and lost significant ground (5L). When asked to comment on the tactics adopted from the 1300m, Apprentice S. Callow stated she was instructed to allow the gelding to stride unrestricted and slowly work into the race from about that point, so the gelding was in striking range coming to the home turn. She said after the slow start, she allowed GULF OF TOMINI to improve around the field from the 1300m, and as the pace had slackened, resulted in the gelding settling outside the leader near the 700m. She added a short distance later; the gelding was under pressure and weakened from the 200m. Apprentice S. Callow was reminded of her obligation regarding the use of the whip on her mount when out of contention. Stable representative for the J. Symons & S. Laxon stables was advised GULF OF TOMINI would be required to Officially trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to resuming.

WISNIERSKA – Near the 1300m, momentarily steadied from the heels of CYBER CITY. Rider D. Thornton reported he was not disappointed with the filly’s performance, noting the weight impost carried. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative M. Eggleston stated the filly had to do a fair bit of work early to keep PROFOUNDLY in a wide position and with the heavy weight, was detrimental to the finishing efforts of WISNIERSK. He advised that WISNIERSKA had pulled up fine on return to the stable and it is the intention to drop the filly back in distance next start.
PROFOUNDLY – Shifted in on jumping, taking ARGENTUM ROCK onto GLAM, which was checked to avoid the heels of ARGENTUM ROCK. Raced wide without cover for the majority. When questioned regarding his riding of the filly, Apprentice J. McMurray stated at its previous start, the intention was to be forward; however, failed to show sufficient speed and settled worse than midfield. He said with similar instructions, the addition of blinkers today and the step up in distance, the filly was able to settle off the pace, albeit wide.
