SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT

From SCTC Friday 14th March 2023:

After having opened an inquiry and taken initial comments from jockeys L Tarrant (PANTHER POWER), T Brooker (OAKFIELD HIBISCUS) and apprentice B Wheeler (ALAMIRA) on the above date, Stewards today continued an inquiry into the reason for PANTHER POWER being checked passing the 500m. After hearing further submissions and viewing the appropriate patrol footage, apprentice B Wheeler, in the presence of senior rider Jim Byrne, was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR131(a) in that as the rider of ALAMIRA in Race 7 at the SCTC meeting on Friday 14th April he made insufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting in passing the 500m which resulted in PANTHER POWER being tightened for room and having to be checked. The license of B Wheeler to ride in races was suspended for a period of 9 days to commence midnight 1st of May up to and including midnight 10th May 2023.

The start was significantly delayed when BELISTIC MAN cast its off-fore plate on arrival at the barriers and had to be re-shod. The start was further delayed when ARGYLE LANE was fractious in the barriers, removed and re-saddled, then underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start.

ARGYLE LANE – Began awkwardly, making contact with the nearside barrier partition, this caused jockey M Murphy to have his near-side foot almost dislodged from his iron and at a point approaching the 800m, he was obliged to reach down and re-position his foot. Raced three-wide throughout. Jockey M Murphy was asked to comment on his mounts performance and he stated that despite having to reposition his foot and racing wide, he was disappointed with the horses performance as he was under pressure from the 500m and the gelding weakened in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer J King was advised that the gelding would be required to officially trial prior to racing again.

GO DEEP – Slow to begin. Over raced in the early stages.

Race 4: PARKLANDS TAVERN QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 1000 metres

ZOUMETEOR – Began awkwardly and bumped with KNIGHT’S CHOICE. Raced wide throughout. Hung out rounding the home turn and raced greenly under pressure in the home straight.

KNIGHT'S CHOICE – Bumped heavily on jumping and lost ground. Held up for clear running from the 300m onwards. Jockey T Harrison was questioned regarding her tactics adopted in the home straight as to whether there had been an opportunity early when entering the home straight to shift out and improve with ASHILLA. Jockey Harrison indicated that she had given consideration to shifting wider at that point however was of the opinion that she could attempt to follow ENTERPRISE LEGEND which she considered to be a chance in the event and attempt to improve closer to the fence. Miss Harrison agreed that with hindsight, given she was unable to obtain clear running to the inside, she would have been better served shifting wider when rounding the home turn. Miss Harrison added that she had intended settling in a more forward position, however suffered interference on jumping away and that a step up in instance would benefit the gelding next start. Stewards found that jockey Harrison’s explanation was not unreasonable in the circumstances and took no further action.

ORIENT'S SECRET – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout.

ENTERPRISE LEGEND – Slow to begin. Held up for clear running until leaving the 200m.

ASHILLA – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped MISHANI JET.

Race 5: BUTLER MCDERMOTT LAWYERS Maiden Handicap 1800 metres

SECRET RED – Had some difficulty obtaining clear running for a short distance approaching the 300m. Laid out over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the seemingly improved performance, trainer J Johnston stated that at the horses recent starts over shorter distances the gelding has been unable to muster early speed, however has finished its races off strongly. Mr Johnston indicated with the step up in distance to 1800m today, the gelding was able to settle in a more forward position and he had expected a forward showing.

HALF MOON BAY – Stewards interviewed jockey T Brooker regarding the pace that was set in the early and middle stages. Jockey Brooker stated that she had been instructed to lead and had anticipated not obtaining the lead as easily as she did. She further added that the filly did over race to a point approaching the 1300m, however she was able to have the horse travel in the middle stages and felt that the filly was entitled to finish the race off better than it did. Stewards accepted her comments.  When questioned regarding the performance, trainer D Vandyke stated that despite the fast tempo set in the early stages, he would have expected the filly to finish the race off in a better manner and would consider the horses immediate racing future. Stewards noted his comments.

TANTALUM – Slow to begin.

Race 6: BUNDY CHOP SHOP BENCHMARK 65 Handicap 2200 metres

Apprentice C Collis the rider of HARBELLE was reprimanded pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident. Apprentice A Donald was fined $300 pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) for using her whip on 7 occasions prior to the 100m.

HARBELLE – Steward’s inquired into the riding of HARBELLE. Of concern to Steward’s was apprentice Collis’ decision to shift out to a three-wide position and improve after passing the 1500m which resulted in the horse racing three-wide outside the lead until the 900m and when unable to lead was then eased and remained in a three-wide position before weakening in the home straight. Apprentice Collis explained that when his mount commenced to over race after leaving the 1600m, he felt he had an opportunity to improve to the lead, however after passing the 1200m, the leaders quickened the pace, and he was unable to cross. Apprentice Collis indicated that he then attempted to steady with a view to again obtain cover. Trainer M Currie was also interviewed, he explained that apprentice Collis had been instructed to attempt to ride in a forward position and also expressed concerns with the tactics adopted during the middle stages. After viewing the video footage apprentice Collis acknowledged that he had erred in that when attempting to improve to the lead he should have ridden more vigorously to achieve this manuever and after being unsuccessful should have remained outside the lead rather than yield ground. Stewards accepted that apprentice Collis had made an error in judgement however were not satisfied, when considering his status as an apprentice, that his actions had been so unreasonable to be culpable under the rules and took no further action other than to draw this ride to the attention of the Racing Queensland apprentice training department.

MINTAKA LAD – When asked to comment on the performance, jockey J Byrne stated that the horse had raced keenly last start and the stable had therefore removed the blinkers from the horse’s gear. He added that the horse travelled comfortably throughout today’s event, however failed to quicken in the home straight when asked for a finishing effort. Trainer D Vandyke advised Stewards that he was somewhat disappointed with the geldings finishing effort and would monitor the horse in the coming days.

Race 9: DOUBLE R GROUP Class 3 Handicap 1000 metres

Prior to the declaration of correct weight, stewards considered an objection lodged by jockey J Orman the rider of the third placed PUTONTHEREDLIGHT against ZINGALONG (M Powell) being declared the winner, alleging interference in the home straight. Stewards after hearing evidence from the relevant parties and viewing the stewards patrol footage, found that near the 300m, ZINGALONG shifted in resulting in PUTONTHEREDLIGHT having to be checked for several strides before shifting wider to obtain clear running. Near the 150m, ZINGALONG shifted out resulting in PUTONTHEREDLIGHT to have to alter course back to the inside to obtain clear running. Stewards were satisfied that these incidents cost PUTONTHEREDLIGHT in excess of the ¾ length margin between the two horses at the conclusion of the event and were satisfied that had the interference not occurred, PUTONTHEREDLIGHT would have finished ahead of ZINGALONG, therefore Stewards upheld the protest and declared correct weight on the numbers
12 GOBLIN' DE QUO
3 PUTONTHEREDLIGHT
4 ZINGALONG
14 WINE NOT ROSES

Trainer T Miller was found guilty of a charge pursuant to AR228(b) in that at the conclusion of the protest hearing, Mr Miller directed offensive comments and language towards jockey J Orman whilst in the stewards room. Mr Miller was subsequently fined $500.
