Race 2: TAYLOR BUILDING GROUP QTIS 3YO H’CAP – 1000M

As Apprentice A. Patis had riding engagements at another venue, she unable to arrive on course to fulfil her engagement on ADAMDEEANT. Stewards therefore permitted jockey A. Sewell to be substituted as the rider of the gelding.

DEVIL’S TEMPTATION – Hung out rounding the home turn. When asked to comment on the performance, Apprentice N. Fazackerley advised that his mount began well and travelled comfortably in the early and middle stages, however when placed under pressure whilst rounding the home turn, the gelding failed to respond to his riding and proved disappointing. Co-trainer M. Sears advised that in light of today’s performance, the stable will now give consideration to sending the gelding for an immediate spell. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary examination of the filly, which tailed off and finished a distant last, failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities. Trainer G. Barbierato was advised that a warning will be placed on the filly for being uncompetitive.

Race 3: CALTEX BENCHMARK 55 H’CAP – 1625M

BUZZER BEATER – Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Laid in in the home straight.

OCTAVIAN – Stewards accepted the explanation provided by trainer L. Hatch regarding the late scratching of the gelding at 3.15pm.

OPEN ROAD – Began awkwardly and shifted out. Jockey M. Hellyer reported that it had not been his intention to lead in the event today, however after being caught wide in the early stages, he elected to ride his mount forward to obtain the leading position approaching the 1300m. He added that he had been comfortable settling in a forward position due to the lack of speed in the race.

WILLIAM – Laid in in the home straight. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the seemingly improved performance, trainer K. Loy advised that the gelding had been working well since entering her stable and she had expected a forward showing today. Stewards noted the explanation.

THE EQUALIZER – Steadied approaching the 1400m when BUZZER BEATER shifted in when not completely clear. Apprentice M. Savva, the rider of BUZZER BEATER, was reprimanded under AR. 131(a) as a result of this incident.

WALKINSHAW – Raced 3 wide without cover throughout.

Race 4: QUEENSLAND ELECTRICAL SOLUTIONS MAIDEN H’CAP – 1200M

The start of this race was delayed when a number of runners proved difficult to load.

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow the connections of ISSAQUAH, placed 4th by the judge, to view the photo finish print. After viewing the print, the connections were satisfied with the Judge’s semaphored numbers.

ROACCI – Raced 3 wide without cover for the majority. Forced wider on the track by COININ passing the 700m. When questioned by Stewards in relation to the performance, jockey M. Hellyer advised that it was his intention to settle in a forward position today however, after beginning only fairly, his mount was caught in a 3 wide position, and approaching the 700m was forced wider on the track by COININ which shifted out. He added that, in his opinion, COININ was not travelling well at that point of the race and he therefore permitted ROACCI to stride forward. He went on to say that upon entering the home straight, his mount had a tendency to lay in and, in his opinion, raced very greenly and proved disappointing.

LICENCE TO ROCK – Steadied near the 300m when LET SARA ROCK shifted out when not completely clear. Jockey N. Tomizawa, the rider of LET SARA ROCK, was reprimanded under AR. 131(a) as a result of this incident.

ISSAQUAH – Held up from the 500m until entering the home straight. Shifted in to secure clear running near the 200m.

SUZY NEEDS LOVIN’ – Slow to begin. Steadied from heels leaving the 100m.

LET SARA ROCK – Shifted out near the 300m to secure clear running. Laid in in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that the mare had sustained an injury to its hind end which could include its pelvis or any associated musculature. Trainer K. Kemp undertook to have his veterinary surgeon examine the mare in the coming days, and would report back to Stewards the results of that examination. Mr. Kemp was advised that the mare will require a veterinary clearance prior to next racing.

COININ – Shifted wider on the track approaching the 700m. Stewards questioned Apprentice J. Murphy as to the reason for him shifting to a 3 wide position leaving the 800m. Apprentice Murphy advised that he had obtained a one off position approaching the 800m, however his mount was racing greenly and hung out leaving the 800m. He added that when attempting to go back to the one off position he was unable to do so as LICENCE TO ROCK had already improved to his mount’s inside. He went on to say that the mare had failed to respond to his riding in the home straight and felt awkward in its action. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare failed to reveal any apparent abnormalities other than it was sucking air.

COURTINGROCK – Stewards questioned jockey N. Evans in relation to his riding of filly throughout. Jockey Evans advised that he had not received any specific instructions from the trainer, however he noted that the filly’s usual racing pattern is to take up a position at the rear of the field. He added that COURTINGROCK was bumped at the start and, as a result, shifted in and lost ground. Jockey Evans stated that the filly showed no early speed and that he rode it  forward in an attempt to gain contact with the rear of the field. He added that the filly had a tendency to lay in from the 500m and he did not want to shift wider on the track to go around the field whilst rounding the home turn. He went on to say that near the 250m he elected to shift in to the inside of EURO ROCKSTAR to obtain clear running, however that runner commenced to shift in under pressure which resulted in him having to take hold of his mount and shift back to the outside of EURO ROCKSTAR near the 150m. He further added that, in his opinion, COURTIINGROCK was out of contention at that point of the race and he therefore desisted from riding the filly out to the end of the race. Stewards noted the comments tendered by jockey Evans, however they were of the opinion that he had erred in that after shifting to the outside of EURO ROCKSTAR near the 150m he should have ridden his mount with more vigour until the concluding stages. Whilst Stewards did not feel that jockey Evans’ ride was culpable under the rules, they advised him that they would expect him to show more vigour in similar circumstances in the future.

EURO ROCKSTAR – Raced in restricted room for a short distance and was steadied leaving the 300m when ISSAQUAH shifted in marginally.
