Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today's meeting:
Race 5 – STARLACCA – G. Geran + 3kg (58.5kg)
Race 5 – SAY WHEN SUTTY – J. Molloy +3kg (58.5kg)
Race 5 - When there were no suitable riders available, Stewards acceded to trainer R. Warzecha’s request for G. Geran to ride STARLACCA 3kg over the handicapped weight. A public broadcast to this effect was made and on course bookmakers were notified.
Stewards in considering the available riders at today’s meeting and also horses today that were engaged in races at the Dalby meeting on 1 November, which were abandoned, subsequently accepted the reasons of trainers for the late alterations and declaration of riders.
Apprentice R. Thorburn was fined $400 under the provisions of AR143(14)(a) for failing to claim his full allowance on ZIN ZAN READY (R1), SWEET ABOUT ME (R4) and PRUCIA (R6). In considering penalty, Stewards considered R. Thorburn’s submission regarding his misjudgment of the status of today’s meeting, his guilty plea and his disciplinary record.
RACE 1: LASER CLINICS AUSTRALIA CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1200 M
DON’T DISS AROUND – Hampered at the start and then unable to muster speed in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
ARAMINTA – Raced wide rounding the home turn.
ZIN ZAN READY – Apprentice R. Thorburn could offer no explanation for the disappointing performance.
LONDON POINT (NZ) – Jumped in at the start and hampered DON’T DISS AROUND. Near the 1000m got its head up when being steadied to obtain cover. Near the 800m got its head up for a short distance when racing keenly.
RACE 2: TOOWOOMBA BUILDING & RENOVATION CENTRE BENCHMARK 60 HANDICAP 1625 M
UNLEASH – Bumped heavily at the start. Near the 1000m was steadied from heels and shifted wider on the track. Stewards questioned rider H. Richardson regarding her riding, specifically the reasons for shifting wider on the track rounding the home turn, which permitted the eventual winner BLUE CHIP GIRL to improve to the inside of her mount. H. Richardson stated that her instructions were to obtain cover as the mare had a space of three weeks between its previous run. She added that after being caught three wide from the barriers, she attempted to obtain cover approaching the 1000m, however the pace of the race eased, and a short distance later was inconvenienced and had to shift wider on the track. She further added that she elected to allow her mount to stride from the 800m however the mare commenced to hang out and raced on one rein from that point and proved difficult to ride. She added that she had attempted to hold her ground approaching the turn but UNLEASH continued to hang out and forced VON BEE wider on the track and continued to shift out in the home straight and inconvenienced that runner on several occasions. Stewards, in considering the evidence, including their own observations, accepted H. Richardson’s explanation. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. Co-Trainer C. Geran was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of the mare.
VON BEE (NZ) – When asked to comment, apprentice R. Thorburn stated that he was able to obtain a forward position in the early stages. He added that he then attempted to obtain the lead leaving the 1200m, however MYSTERY POWER who was leading, went with him and the middle stages were run quicker than he would have preferred. He further stated that when UNLEASH improved around him at the 800m, he was obliged to pressure his mount to keep in contact. He added that approaching the home turn, UNLEASH shifted out taking him wider on the track and also inconvenienced him by laying out in the home straight. R. Thorburn stated that his mount then began to feel the pressure of the race and in not being comfortable with the gelding’s action did not pressure the horse leaving the 200m. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
MYSTERY POWER – Jumped awkwardly and shifted out.
BLUE CHIP GIRL – Raced keenly in the early stages.
SOMETHING FORJO – Slow to begin. Near the 900m when the pace eased, improved between runners and was steadied from heels.
SEACRYPTION – Bumped heavily at the start. Near the 1000m steadied away from the heels of VON BEE and inconvenienced UNLEASH which was steadied and shifted wider on the track. Raced wide throughout the event. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. When asked to comment on the performance, rider B. Stower stated she had no set instructions and from the wide barrier elected to assess how the race developed. She added that after being wide in the early stages, she elected to allow her mount to stride to obtain a forward position, however runners improved to her inside and she was unable to cross. She further added that the mare dropped the bit near the 800m and was under pressure from that point and proved disappointing.

Shifted out to improve rounding the home turn bumping MAY on two occasions which in turn made contact with the hind quarters of MIDNIGHT BOOM which became unbalanced. Apprentice R. Thorburn (BESIEGE) was reprimanded for careless riding under the provisions of AR131(a). Shortly after entering the home straight, was steadied when held up and unable to improve behind GOIN’ SKITZ and BRINGME which shifted in, until shifting out leaving the 200m. Apprentice S. Callow the rider of BRINGME was advised to exercise greater care when shifting ground. Stewards questioned apprentice R. Thorburn in the presence of R. Fradd from the Racing Queensland Training Department regarding his riding leaving the 150m. R. Thorburn stated that after being tightened for room upon entering the home straight, whereby his mount was clipping heels, he shifted out leaving the 200m and short distance later felt the gelding was short in its action and had desisted in pressuring his mount. R. Thorburn pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR114(2)(a) for failing to report to Stewards anything which might have affected the running of BESIEGE in the race. Stewards adjourned this matter to consider penalty and obtain further evidence.
BRINGME – Slow to begin. Shifted out to improve leaving the 800m and raced wide from that point. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

RACE 5: JAMES STREET BATHROOMS RATINGS BAND 0-52 HANDICAP 1000 M
After weighing out, apprentice K. Barker became indisposed when a leg injury sustained from the previous race intensified. A public broadcast to this effect was made and on course bookmakers were notified. Apprentice K. Barker was advised that she would require medical clearance before riding next.
Prior to correct weight, Stewards considered an application by the connections of I’M A CHOCOHOLIC to be declared a non-runner alleging the mare was not afforded a fair start. After taking evidence from rider H. Richardson, the starter and viewing the race films, Stewards established that I’M A CHOCOHOLIC which was being assisted by a barrier attendant, was inadvertently being held when the start was effected, resulting in the mare throwing its head in the air and jumping sideways and taking no part in the race. Stewards were satisfied that I’M A CHOCOHOLIC was denied a fair start and acting under the provisions of AR204(1)(c) declared the mare a non-runner. Stewards ordered that all bets placed on I’M A CHOCOHOLIC be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
