Began awkwardly. Hung out from the 600m. Stewards questioned jockey C Robertson in relation to tactics adopted whereby the gelding settled further forward than its established pattern. Jockey Robertson advised that he was issued no specific instructions by connections, however prior to the event he had formed the view that SHADYVALE STORM was the only speed in the event and therefore he elected to ride APATAKI along in the early stages with the view of possibly settling in a more forward position. Slow to begin. Making the turn out of the home straight on the first occasion, improved onto heels and shifted out abruptly. Due to the moderate temp, over raced at heels for a considerable distance in the early and middle stages. When asked to comment on the performance of the mare, apprentice C Collis advised that in his opinion, the slow early tempo was the major contributing factor in relation to the performance particularly when after being slow to begin, he was forced to obtain a trailing position in the event rather than being able to lead the event.
