Emotions ran high when the ageing Gelantipy Gold held off a quality-stacked field to win the Clem Jones Cup on Thursday for the Zammit family.
The chaser won his first race in almost six months last Sunday, on a day the greyhound community paid tribute to Selena Zammit’s late father Jeff ‘Silk’ Jones and made it back-to-back wins when beating the likes of Del Rey, Shoes To Fill and Big Bad Bob.
An emotional Michael Zammit praised the dog for his spirit on and off the track.
“He’s just a marvel this dog we thought he was done and dusted, but to come back at four-and-a-half-years age and win a race of this calibre in phenomenal,” Zammit said.
“I know it’s a cliché but you couldn’t ask to for a better dog in the kennel or at home he’s got such a beautiful temperament.”
Zammit said at his age his abilities were limited but knew when the field stacked up his superior will and a family premonition would get him home.
“At his age he’s no world beater but tries his heart out every time he goes around, he’s part of the family and we’re all pretty emotional,” he said.
“My son said during the week he had a dream he won a race and the last time we had the kids at the track we won this race four years ago.
“We made sure we were all here tonight and look what’s happened.”
