Racing Queensland and the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club have raised $3885 for brain cancer research on the highly successful UBET Origin Greyhound Night.
The ‘Blue Dog for Brain Cancer’ initiative saw RQ and Brisgreys donate $500 each to the Mark Hughes Foundation each time the Number 4 greyhound won at Albion Park on July 12.
Punters on course were also able to help raise funds by purchasing a ‘Beanie for Brain Cancer’ for $20, when Queensland defeated NSW in the best of three series.
Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club CEO Luke Gatehouse said although the Number 4 greyhound only won twice on the night, other on-course initiatives helped raise an extra $1885.
“All proceeds from specially made UBET Origin Greyhound Series team caps sold for $10 on the night were also donated to the foundation,” Mr Gatehouse said.
“Brisgreys and RQ were proud to help the Mark Hughes Foundation continue its fight against this insidious disease.”
Racing Queensland Chief Operating Officer Adam Wallish said the UBET Origin Greyhound series was a resounding success, with a large crowd and strong wagering numbers recorded on the evening.
“The result shows what can be done when participants, UBET and Racing Queensland work together to promote the sport in new and exciting ways,” he said.
Mr Wallish thanked all greyhound participants for getting behind the innovative idea and for helping to make it such a huge success.
“The ensuing result proved that racing must think outside the box to generate new fans in a competitive sporting and wagering landscape,” he said.
