UBET Origin Greyhound Series Squads announced

Former rugby league legends Chris Walker and Terry Hill have helped Racing Queensland and the Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club launch the 2018 UBET Queensland Winter Greyhound Racing Carnival and Origin Greyhound Series in Brisbane.

The carnival is now in full swing, with heats of the $110,000 UBET Gold Cup (710m) to be run at the Albion Park on Thursday night, before the big final on Thursday June 14.

The carnival then focuses on the sprinters and the Group 1 Winter Cup (520m) on July 5, which for the first time, will be worth $150,000 in prize money.

Racing Queensland’s all-new $120,000 UBET Origin Greyhound Series shapes to be one of the highlights of the carnival, with some of Australia’s best greyhounds to line up at Albion Park on July 12.

Walker (QLD) and Hill (NSW) announced their squads of 25 at the launch, which will give punters the chance to follow the form over the next four weeks leading into Origin night.

“State pride will be on the line at Albion Park, so I look forward to meeting the trainers to instill the Queensland spirit into the team that will help us topple the Blues,” Walker said.

Hill is a Group 1 winning owner and a greyhound tragic. He said the NSW squad had a solid mix of sprinting and staying talent capable of knocking off Queensland on their home turf.

“It’s never easy to bring a greyhound up to Queensland and beat the locals at Albion Park. However, I think the squad our selectors have picked will give us a solid platform to choose from leading into the big night,” he said.

Racing Queensland CEO Brendan Parnell thanked UBET for its generous support of the 2018 Winter Carnival, and said he looked forward to the carnival, which will wrap up with the Queensland Nationals Sprint and Distance Finals on August 9.

“Some of Australia’s best trainers and greyhounds have already arrived in Brisbane, with the UBET Gold Cup kicking off what shapes to be an exciting Winter Carnival,” Mr Parnell said.

Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club CEO Luke Gatehouse said everyone at the club looked forward to welcoming punters to the track throughout the carnival, starting with tonight’s Gold Cup heats.

“With two Group 1 finals, and the new Origin series, we look forward to welcoming a selection of Australia’s best greyhounds to Albion Park over the next two months,” Mr Gatehouse said.

The carnival will also see major Grand Prix meetings held at Queensland’s regional clubs.

Townsville and Rockhampton hosted their $7,500 Grand Prix races earlier this week, with Cairns (June 15), Bundaberg (June 16) and Ipswich (June 21) to follow.
